Download or read book Descriptive Grammar of Pashto and its Dialects written by Anne David and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pashto/Pushto/Pukhto is a group of varieties used by as many as 30 million people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, yet a grammar describing these varieties collectively has not been published. The CASL Pashto grammar originates from extensive use of both primary and secondary materials. It attends to features of both spoken and written forms of Pashto and exemplifies the latter generously with naturally-occurring sentences. Detailed descriptions are provided of the phonology and orthography and of the inflectional and derivational morphology applied to all major word classes, with special attention to the complex morphology of verb formation and descriptions of the multiple pronominal systems. Notes on some of the prominent syntactic constructions are provided as a descriptive basis for learners of Pashto and for those interested in syntactic properties characteristic of South Asian languages. For the first time, the highly distinctive Middle dialects, including Waziri, receive attention next to the other major dialect groups. A formal grammar focusing on the morphology is an available companion work.
Download or read book Rohi Mataluna written by Mohammad Nawaz Tair and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For a Pashtun, the world is a dangerous place. . . . To negotiate such a world, a man or woman needs wise words. . . . Pashto proverbs provide critical lessons about faith and honor, human nature and relationships, friends and enemies, power and revenge, in short, how to live in a society that is at once fragrant with friendship, fraught with ambiguities, and seared by treachery." You are invited to look into the world of the Pashtun through the pages of Rohi Mataluna: Pashto Proverbs. This selection of 1,350 Pashto proverbs (mataluna) from the mountainous (rohi) Afghan borderlands, with English translation and cultural annotations, aims to preserve some of the original flavor of an oral literature that reflects a traditional culture now facing turmoil and inevitable change. This second edition has been completely updated, revised, and expanded with new material, while taking care to preserve and honor the original work of the first edition. It includes: -- Cultural background and context of the Afghan frontier -- Explanations of key words and concepts -- Examples of the use of texts in social situations -- Observations on the form and structure of proverbs -- Parallel and variant texts -- Background stories -- Index of key words, persons, and places This book will appeal to readers and students of Pashto and English, to scholars and tourists, to anthropologists and folklorists, and to all those interested in learning more about the Pashtun people of the Afghan frontier.

Book excerpt: Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives, has received little attention in the linguistic literature, and no other comprehensive grammar of the standard language has yet been published. This work describes the phonology, unique orthography, morphology, and syntax of standard Dhivehi. Plentiful examples with native orthography, Roman transliteration, and morpheme-by-morpheme glossing illustrate the various features of the language. This grammar will be of use both to linguists and to students of Dhivehi.

Download or read book Easy Pashto Handbook With Hindi Pronunciation written by Purnima Sharma and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is specially designed for keen aspirants of Pashto language and is also useful for the non-native grammar teachers. Pashto is one of the official languages of Afghanistan. As compared to other foreign languages, Pashto is a very easy language for Indians because it is originated from Sanskrit and Prakrit languages and loads of words in Pashto are derived from these languages. The grammar rules of Pashto are exactly the same as of Hindi. Further, Indians' familiarity with Urdu and Persian vocabulary makes Pashto much easier for them. Moreover, due to the shared history and culture of India and Afghanistan, Pashto is the most suitable and desired language for those who wants to develop deep understanding of our common rich cultural heritage.
Download or read book Audiovisual translation in the foreign language classroom applications in the teaching of English and other foreign languages written by Jennifer Lertola and published by Research-publishing.net. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to systematically review studies on the applications of captioning (subtitling) and revoicing (dubbing, audio description, and voice-over) in the foreign language classroom, in order to offer an overview of the state of the art and encourage further research. The literature review presents research on the topic, paying particular attention to relevant experimental studies (i.e. empirical research that involves data collection, and not just a mere description of the experience or the learners’ outcomes), examined in terms of research focus, target languages, participants, learning settings, audiovisual materials, captioning/revoicing software, and type of analysis (i.e. qualitative and/or quantitative).
Download or read book Pashto Phonology written by Kamal Muhammad Khan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a detailed analysis of the relationship between syllable structure and word order, a long-standing correlation in typological linguistics which has been previously described as an implicational universal. It presents data from Pashto (an Eastern-Iranian language spoken mainly in Pakistan and Afghanistan), and explores consonant clusters and the basic word order of the language. It begins by introducing the Pashto language, before going on to highlight the word order typology and language universals, followed by a detailed analysis of its syllable structure and basic word order in light of the Optimality Theoretic (OT) framework. The study then takes up the case of the basic word order as a weak foundation for such a typological correlation and challenges this view of structural implications by comparing Pashto (an SOV language) with English (an SVO language). Finally, the book concludes by emphasising the global implications of the study, and offers future recommendations for further research on this language.

In simple, straightforward terms, Dr. Pimsleur will help you learn grammar (seamlessly), vocabulary, and how to practice pronunciation (and come out sounding like a native). The key is the simplicity and directness of Pimsleur’s approach to a daunting subject, breaking it down piece by piece, demystifying the process along the way. Dr. Pimsleur draws on his own language learning trials and tribulations offering practical advice for overcoming the obstacles so many of us face. Originally published in 1980, How to Learn a Foreign Language is now available on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Pimsleur’s publication of the first of his first audio courses that embodied the concepts and methods found here.
