Book Destroying the World to Save It

Download or read book Destroying the World to Save It written by Robert Jay Lifton and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 1999-10-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award winner and renowned psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton reveals a world at risk from millennial cults intent on ending it all. Since the earliest moments of recorded history, prophets and gurus have foretold the world's end, but only in the nuclear age has it been possible for a megalomaniac guru with a world-ending vision to bring his prophecy to pass. Now Robert Jay Lifton offers a vivid and disturbing case in point in this chilling exploration of Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese cult that released sarin nerve gas in the Tokyo subways. With unprecedented access to former Aum members, Lifton has produced a pathbreaking study of the inner life of a modern millennial cult. He shows how Aum's guru Shoko Asahara (charismatic spiritual leader, con man, madman) created a religion from a global stew of New Age thinking, ancient rituals, and apocalyptic science fiction, then recruited scientists as disciples and set them to producing weapons of mass destruction. Taking stock as well of Charles Manson, Heaven's Gate, and the Oklahoma City bombers, Lifton confronts the frightening possibility of a twenty-first century in which cults and terrorists may be able to bring about their own holocausts. Bold and compelling, Destroying the World to Save It charts the emergence of a new global threat of urgent concern to us all.

Book Psychology of Terrorism

Download or read book Psychology of Terrorism written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this annotated bibliography on the psychology of terrorism, the author has defined terrorism as "acts of violence intentionally perpetrated on civilian noncombatants with the goal of furthering some ideological, religious or political objective." The principal focus is on nonstate actors. The task was to identify and analyze the scientific and professional social science literature pertaining to the psychological and/or behavioral dimensions of terrorist behavior (not on victimization or effects). The objectives were to explore what questions pertaining to terrorist groups and behavior had been asked by social science researchers; to identify the main findings from that research; and attempt to distill and summarize them within a framework of operationally relevant questions. To identify the relevant social science literature, the author began by searching a series of major academic databases using a systematic, iterative keyword strategy, mapping, where possible, onto existing subject headings. The focus was on locating professional social science literature published in major books or in peer-reviewed journals. Searches were conducted of the following databases October 2003: Sociofile/Sociological Abstracts, Criminal Justice Abstracts (CJ Abstracts), Criminal Justice Periodical Index (CJPI), National Criminal Justice Reference Service Abstracts (NCJRS), PsycInfo, Medline, and Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS). Three types of annotations were provided for works in this bibliography: Author's Abstract -- this is the abstract of the work as provided (and often published) by the author; Editor's Annotation -- this is an annotation written by the editor of this bibliography; and Key Quote Summary -- this is an annotation composed of "key quotes" from the original work, edited to provide a cogent overview of its main points.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your source to "CLASSIFIED INFORMATION" on Terrorism & Politically Motivated Aggression, as well as the "Ways & Means" to "Neutralize and Control" these modern day THREATS!!!!! This NEW research is based mainly on classified information, which the main author through his long-term stationing in the Balkans until late 2000, covering a position of major relevance in the Security Arena, has managed to experience firsthand. The included update is quite current, February 2002, and includes additional information regarding Russia, Biological Warfare & Chemical Weapons. A great percentage of this research is regarded as CLASSIFIED & RESTRICTED information by official sources such as SFOR, KFOR, NATO, as well as American & European Intelligence Communities. We have included classified information released by Ex-Government Officials, whose names, for obvious reasons, cannot be identified. The Criminal Organizations and especially the TERRORIST THREAT is a hidden threat, and to assess the nature and seriousness of such a threat is quite difficult with, and especially without access to CLASSIFEID INTELLIGENCE. An informative study of politically motivated aggression and the ways that certain golbal groups manage to operate on financial and organisational levels, put together with information from classified intelligence sources from over 10 agencies. The most up-to-date information regarding terrorism in the Balkans and the Middle East. Incorporating the author's firsthand experience, the book explores the connections that organised crime and terrorism may have with the drug trade, religious extremism, and political motivation, as well as the role that resources and location may have in the mobilisation of aggressive sentiment. Ideas are presented on ways that criminal activity may be countered on a world-wide basis, including the formation of global organisations specifically designed to weed out drug traffickers, Mafia connections, and communities that may harbour the development of terrorist forces.
