Book Tea in Australia

Download or read book Tea in Australia written by Peter D. Griggs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1950, Australians were the world’s highest consumers of tea per capita. This book tells the story of how tea emerged as the national beverage in the Australian colonies during the nineteenth century, and explores why Australians consumed so much of the beverage for so long. Special attention is devoted to analysing the evolution of the Australian tea distribution network, especially the marketing strategies used by the tea traders to promote their products. Other topics examined here include the development of tea rituals such as afternoon tea and high tea and their role in Australian society, the local manufacture of teawares, the establishment of tea rooms and the emergence of a tea growing industry in Australia after 1960. The first comprehensive account of the history of tea in Australia, this book will be of particular interest to individuals interested in Australian history, economic and social history, and food history.

Book A Sketch of South Australia for the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880

Download or read book A Sketch of South Australia for the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of South Australia for the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880 1. - Position and Extent A Glance at the accompanying map shows that, in spite of her name, South Australia occupies the central portion of the Australian Continent. Lying between 120 and 380 S. lat., and 1290 and 1410 E. long., the colony extends from the Indian to the Southern Ocean, and is bounded on the east by Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria; on the west by Western Australia. Roughly defined, her territory is 2,000 miles long by 500 miles wide, and has an area of over 903, 000 square miles - about ten times that of Great Britain. With the exception of a small settlement on the northern coast (to which a separate chapter will be given) colonisation has hitherto been confined to an area of about a quarter of a million square miles, in the southern part of the colony; and it is consequently to this that the remarks made about South Australia in the following pages must be understood to apply. A portion of the colony still remains unexplored. 2. Physical Features. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
