Book Emerson s Ghosts

Download or read book Emerson s Ghosts written by Randall Fuller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly commonplace to find scholars who circle back to Ralph Waldo Emerson and his intellectual heirs as a way of better understanding contemporary social and aesthetic contexts. Why does Emerson's cultural legacy continue to influence writers so forcefully? In this innovative study, Randall Fuller examines the way pivotal twentieth-century critics have understood and deployed Emerson as part of their own larger projects aimed at reconceiving America. He examines previously unpublished material and original research on Van Wyck Brooks, Perry Miller, F.O. Matthiessen, and Sacvan Bercovitch along with other supporting thinkers. An engaging institutional history of American literary studies in the twentieth century, Emerson's Ghosts reveals the unexpected convergent forces that have shaped American cultural history in lasting ways.

It’s not quite dead, just like you.” What was the meaning of Desmond’s childish rhyme, phoned to his sisters just days before his death? What unnamed ‘treasure’ of great value did Bella’s crazy great-uncle Desmond bequeath to his family? In a posthumous letter to be hand-delivered to Bella’s great-aunts, Gilead missionaries just returned from Peru to Cornwall, England, Desmond Wildeve spoke of a priceless object hidden in the vast, cluttered family mansion - a mansion no one had been admitted in for nearly fifty years. And he gave them only one clue to start the hunt : another childish rhyme. Taking on the challenge, Bella, with the help of family, friends, and eccentric villagers, searches for the meanings to the childish rhymes hidden throughout the mansion by her great-uncle. The search leads Bella into comically bizarre situations, including wrestling with mummies, hidden passages, and genealogical secrets as she plays charades with a lunatic from beyond the grave.

Book excerpt: This lie of ours is stained with truth. To them, I’ve always been the charming, least conniving Sinclair. I've never been more than a dancing doll with strings. But that all changes when my childhood friend, Eleonora O’Malley, asks me to be a part of her grand scheme. She needs a fiancé—a fake one. And she wants it to be me. For reasons of my own, I take on the role of her doting future-husband. At first, it’s easy—like putting on a mask for the public. But the mask gets harder and harder to take off, and stolen touches and kisses when no one is watching are blurring the lines. After tens of fake pictures, fake dates, a two-carat ring and an elaborate love story, the scheme is big enough to blow up in everybody’s faces But guess what? It’s blowing up in mine too. And soon, our charade is about to get stained with blood. Note: This book is the first in a duet and ends on a cliffhanger. While it is recommended, you do not have to have read prior books in the series to enjoy this one. Book includes mature subjects suitable for 17+.

Book A J Tomlinson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.J. Tomlinson (1865-1943) ranks among the leading figures of the early Pentecostal movement, and like so many of his cohorts, he was as complex as he was colorful. Arriving in Appalachia as a home missionary determined to uplift and evangelize poor mountain whites, he stayed to become the co-founder and chief architect of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) and the Church of God of Prophecy, which together with their minor offspring now constitute the third-largest denominational family within American Pentecostalism. R.G. Robins's biography recreates the world in which Tomlinson operated, and through his story offers a new understanding of the origins of the Pentecostal movement. Scholars have tended to view Pentecostalism as merely one among many anti-modernist movements of the early twentieth century. Robins argues that this is a misreading of the movement's origins-the result of projecting the modernist/fundamentalist controversy of the 1920s back onto the earlier religious landscape. Seeking to return the story of Pentecostalism to its proper historical context, Robins suggests that Pentecostalism should rightly be seen as an outgrowth of the radical holiness movement of the late nineteenth century. He argues that, far from being anti-modern, Pentecostals tended to embrace modernity. Pentecostal modernism, however, was a working class or "plainfolk" phenomenon, and it is the plainfolk character of the movement that has led so many scholars to mislabel it as anti-modern or fundamentalist. Through the compelling narrative of Tomlinson's life story, Robins sheds new light on late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century American religion, and provides a more refined lens through which to view the religious dynamics of our own day. v
