Difficulties arise from the necessity of learning two vocabularies, as well as from the lack of correlation between the stories and the grammar. In this book the commonest words of the reading form the vocabulary of the exercises, thus allowing more. Time for gram mar work. The stories were written expressly for this pur pose and give the pupil at the outset familiar and usable words. These are mainly cognates, so that the reading may begin as soon as the German letters have been learned. The book includes seventy-two lessons, of which every fifth one is a review. In addition to this, Lessons XXXVII - XL review the first half, and Lessons LXV - LXXII the whole book, taking up at the same time the irregular verbs. Download or read book New German Grammar for Beginners written by Paul Valentine Bacon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New German Grammar for Beginners The New German Grammar combines reading and syntax. Easy stories illustrating the grammar are taken up from the very first day, giving the pupil the satisfaction of reading connected German from the beginning. These stories, which are taken from the author's Vorwaerts, are interesting, carefully graded, and closely connected with the syntax which they illustrate. They treat the most common and some of the quaintest phases of German life, and the descriptions are made more vivid by frequent pictures, collected in Germany by the author. No effort has been spared to make the grammar practical, simple, and thorough. Conversational work - the most practical phase of German study - abounds throughout the reading and is a special feature of every lesson. Material for memorizing is provided at the beginning of each chapter in the form of idioms, proverbs, or short poems. German questions on the reading furnish a further basis for conversation. Practice in writing connected German is given in each review. The book is especially simple, and the learner is given all the legitimate help possible. Accents and puzzling quantities are marked, so that the pupil's first conception of a word may be the correct one. Comparisons and contrasts with English usage are constantly made. Each phase of every rule is illustrated by simple examples. Complete tables of inflectional forms and strong verbs are given for reference. Every form in the reading occurs in the vocabulary. Separable verbs are found under both simple verb and prefix. The article is printed with every noun, the auxiliary with every verb, and the principal parts of irregular verbs are given in full. After the first essentials are finished, each important topic is treated in a group of five lessons, making the book particularly systematic and thorough. Modals are introduced early, as they are vital. The treatment of the Dependent Order is put off till the relative pronoun occurs, and then the first half of the book is reviewed with the Dependent Order, making that the one new subject in Lessons XXXVII-XL. The Subjunctive is brought in earlier than in most books, to allow more time for practice. The plan of each lesson is simple. The memory gems or idioms are to be learned by heart. Up to Lesson XX they are translated for the pupil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
