Book excerpt: Locate nations on the J Curve -- left for authoritarian, right for democratic. Then figure out how to force those on the left to open their societies, rather than encouraging them to shut them tighter by further isolating them. The West's isolation of Kim Jong-il's North Korea gives him the cover he needs to extend his brutal regime (the mistake the U.S. made for a long time with Saddam Hussein and Castro); in Saudi Arabia, western governments should encourage manageable change before the country breaks apart; they should help strengthen China's economy so it can further liberalize; they must encourage Israel to decide what kind of country it will be. Filled with imaginative and surprising examples of how to correct outworn political ideas, The J Curve points the way for western governments to lead the way to a realistic political balance and a healthier economic future.

Book A Geometrical Political Economy

Download or read book A Geometrical Political Economy written by H. Cunynghame and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geometrical Political Economy: Being an Elementary Treatise on the Method of Explaining Some of the Theories of Pure Economic Science by Means of Diagrams The following pages do not require in the reader any knowledge of Mathematics except such Geometry as has been acquired at school, and very little of that. I am aware that to a number of thinkers of great powers the very sight of a diagram is odious. But the feeling of repulsion is really only similar to the dislike of a new language. To read German in old characters is disagreeable to many persons, and the difficulty of Russian and Hebrew partly depends on the alarming aspect of the alphabets of those languages. But the geometrical method is so charming when once it is grasped, and enables somewhat recondite laws to be so clearly seen, that its mastery is worth an effort. The thanks of all English students are due to Professor Marshall, to Fleeming Jenkin, and Mr. Stanley Jevons, for introducing this method into England; and I shall not easily forget the pleasure which I felt, when about thirty years ago the first-named of these writers initiated me into the geometrical method of studying Economics which he has done so much to develop and improve. The title which I have given to this work is perhaps open to the objection that the curves employed are rather graphic than truly geometrical. An examination of them will, however, show that they are more than mere 'graphs.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Kairological Economics

Download or read book Kairological Economics written by Nicolas K. Laos and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis underpins and informs economic decision-making, even if there is a lengthy lag between economic analysis and its gradual absorption into economic debate. Once established as common sense, a text of economic analysis becomes incredibly powerful, because it delineates not only what is the object of knowledge but also what it is sensible to talk about or suggest. If one thinks and acts outside the framework of the dominant text of economic analysis, he risks more than simply the judgment that his recommendations are wrong; his entire moral attitude may be ridiculed or seen as dangerous just because his theoretical assumptions are deemed unrealistic. Therefore, defining common sense and, in essence, what is 'reality' and 'realistic' is the ultimate act of political power. Economic analysis does not simply explain or predict, it tells us what possibilities exist for human action and intervention; it defines both our explanatory possibilities and our moral and practical horizons. Hence, ontology and epistemology matter, and the stakes are far more considerable than at first sight seem to be the case. This is the main idea developed in the following chapters, as Dr. Laos leads readers through a pioneering way of looking at political economy.

Book A New Global Geometry

Download or read book A New Global Geometry written by Greg Albo and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scrutinizes possibilities for an equalised global order, in light of recent conflicts between the world’s major powers The “post-Cold War era is definitively over,” asserted US President Joe Biden as he launched the new National Security Strategy, warning in late 2022 that “a competition is underway between the major powers to shape what comes next.” American leadership, the document declared, would be more necessary than ever to define "the future of the international order,” insisting that the US must marshal its unparalleled economic, military, and diplomatic resources to confront its geopolitical rivals. Socialist Register 2024: A New Global Geometry? takes stock of momentous changes on the horizon: Even if these geopolitical shifts do not spell the end of globalization, how might they alter its historical trajectory? While it is it premature to speak of the end of the liberal economic order, let alone the development of a multipolar international system, can we begin to assess the dimensions of a new global geometry? And, how might we assess the potential vulnerabilities of socialist movements worldwide, alongside the potential resistance our movements might manage to present, grounded in our historical demands for a democratic and equalizing world order?
