Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geographical History of Mammals Since the publication of Dr Wallace's book on the geographical distribution of animals in general, the only works which have appeared relating to Mammals from the same point of view are the small volume by Mr F. E. Beddard, and the series of papers by Mr W. L. Sclater, referred to in the Appendix. Both the latter admittedly take but little account of fossil forms and there is accordingly ample room for a work which? should collect and arrange the information on this subject, and it indicate the deductions which may be drawn therefrom. This task has been attempted in the present volume. The subject is, however, so vast, and the information relating to it scattered! through so many publications, that it is probable many points of interest or importance have not been noticed. From the mode. of arrangement of the work, a considerable amount of repetition was inevitable. The long time that the volume was in the press will account for its containing no allusion to certain papers which have appeared recently. It may therefore be mentioned here that recent discoveries have shown a slight intermixture of northern. types in the Palaeozoic flora of Argentina, so that the isolation of the northern and southern floras is not so nearly complete as was supposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Animals: Their Geological History and Geographical Distribution The method of treatment of the subject discussed in this work was adopted by me when delivering the Swiney Lectures on Geology last year, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Dr. Wallace's remark that we may be enabled, by an accurate knowledge of any group of birds or insects and of their geographical distribution, to map out the islands and continents of a former epoch, encouraged me to attempt to apply his ideas in dealing with our own Continent, and to extend them to other groups of animals. Professor E. Forbes was the first to recognise the significance of the geographical distribution of living animals in deciphering their past wanderings, and I have approached the investigation of the geological history of our fauna in the manner indicated by him. I thought that this method would convey to the general reader, as well as to the student, a clear conception of the nature of the problems to be solved. I trust that this work will stimulate the researches of the student of systematic Biology and that it may also prove acceptable as a contribution to the past geographical history of our Continent. Download or read book The Geographical and Geological Distribution of Animals Classic Reprint written by Angelo Heilprin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geographical and Geological, Distribution of Animals The subject of geographical and geological distribution is so vast that no full treatment of it could be expected in the limited number Of pages set apart for it in the present work. The author has, therefore, been obliged to omit, or at least largely ignore, the consideration of some of the less impor tant animal groups, and, While recognising the deficiencies resulting from such omission, trusts that it will not detract much from the general usefulness of the publication. The plan of treatment followed in the early part of the book (geographical distribution) is largely that so admirably un folded by Mr. Wallace, to Whom, for the constant use of his works, the author is under great obligations. He also Wishes to express his special indebtedness to the pioneer workers in this field, Schmarda and Murray, Whose writings have laid the foundation of much of our existing knowledge in the premises. NO Special mention need be made of the numer ous other authors Who have contributed more or less exten sively to the subject under consideration, and whose works have aided in the preparation of the present volume; to those, collectively, the author likewise desires to acknowledge his indebtedness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Age of Mammals: In Europe, Asia and North America Only a few men of the last century had the gift of speaking in clear language both to the learned and unlearned, and the greatest of these was Huxley. To write both for the man of one's own profession and for the layman, to be accurate and abreast of the specialist who knows as much or more of a subject than you do, while intelligible to the non-specialist there is the difficulty. Many times have I thought to myself in the course of the preparation of these and similar lectures how simple it would be to address either audience separately. Yet I consider it fortunate that both are with us, because I share Huxley's confidence in addressing those who are willing to do a little serious thinking in order to enjoy the vast vistas of interesting truth which come as the reward of effort. I share also his conviction that it is the duty of the man of science to devote a certain part of his time, however absorbed in research he may be, to an honest attempt to scatter scientific truth. Although I may not claim that any parts of this volume are light reading, I have endeavored both to hold the attention of those who are already within the charmed temples of palaeontology and to attract new votaries to its shrines. It should, however, be clearly understood that considerable sections of this work are purely documentary and may be passed over rapidly by the general reader. Time and place are the main theme of this work rather than descent, which has been the main theme of all previous general treatises on the Caenozoic mammals; it is a study of the sources or birthplaces of the several kinds of mammals, of their competitions, migrations, and extinctions, and of the times and places of the occurrence of these great events in the world's history. To set forth this history in all'its grandeur, it is interesting to consider the question of past environments, such as the past geography (palaeogeography) of the earth, the changes in climate and in the earth's surface which conditioned the evolution of plant life (palaeobotany) as the primary source of food supply for the mammals. Thus geology, geography, botany, and climate are treated as leading to a clear understanding of each of the successive groups and movements of mammalian life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Life of the World, Vol. 1: A Descriptive Survey of the Geographical Distribution of Animals Dutch descent that settled in Bedfordshire more than a century ago, died on the 15th of April 1915, aged 66, 'while this work was in the press. It had been long in preparation, and the sheets had received his final revision, so that it remains as he left it, with the exception of this preface. It is a general natural history in which the animals are described according to their geographical distribution, and the treatment of the subject on these lines was not new to him; in fact, his Geographical History of Mammals, published in 1896, is held by many to be his most original and important contribution to scientific literature. These volumes, however, have a wider scope. They are on a more popular basis, and deal with animal life of every kind, vertebrate and invertebrate, in all aspects throughout the world; and, of necessity, prominence is given to those groups which are of most importance in denoting the changes in the lands and seas during comparatively recent geological epochs. Book History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere Classic Reprint written by William B. Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere No one who has not examined it, can form any conception of the enormous mass and variety of material, illustrating the history of American mammals, which has already been gathered into the various museums. A full account of this material would require many volumes, and one of the chief problems in the preparation of this book has been that of making a proper selection of the most instructive and illuminating portions of the long and com plicated story. Indeed, so rapid is the uninterrupted course of discovery, that parts of the text became antiquated while in the press and had to be rewritten. As first prepared, the work proved to be far too long and it was necessary to excise several chapters, for it seemed better to cover less ground than to make the entire history hurried and superficial. The plan of treatment adopted involves a considerable amount of repetition, but this is perhaps not a disadvantage, since the same facts are considered from different points of View. The facts which are here brought together have been asoer tained by many workers, and I have borrowed with the greatest freedom from my fellow labourers in the field of palaeontology. As every compiler of a manual finds, it is not feasible to attribute the proper credit to each discoverer. Huxley has so well explained the situation in the preface to his Anatomy of Vertebrated Ani mals, that I may be permitted to borrow his words: I have intentionally refrained from burdening the text with references and, therefore, the reader, while he is justly entitled to hold me responsible for any errors he may detect, will do well to give me no credit for what mav seem original, unless his knowledge is sufficient to render him a competent judge on that head. A book of this character is obviously not the proper place for polemical discussions of disputed questions. Whenever, there fore, the views expressed differ widely from those maintained by other palaeontologists, I have attempted no more than to state, as fairly as I could, the alternative interpretations and my own choice between them. Any other course was forbidden by the limitations of space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Geographical Distribution of Animals Vol 1 of 2 written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geographical Distribution of Animals, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Study of the Relations of Living and Extinct Faunas as Elucidating the Past Changes of the Earth's Surface The detailed study of several groups of the birds and insects collected by myself in the East, brought prominently before me some of the curious problems of Geographical Distribution; but I should hardly have ventured to treat the whole subject, had it not been for the kind encouragement of Mr. Darwin and Professor Newton, who, about six years ago, both suggested that I should undertake the task. I accordingly set to work; but soon became discouraged by the great dearth of materials in many groups, the absence of general systematic works, and the excessive confusion that pervaded the classification. Neither was it easy to decide on any satisfactory method of treating the subject. During the next two years, however, several im portant catalogues and systematic treatises appeared, which induced me to resume my work; and during the last three years it has occupied a large portion of my time. After much consideration, and some abortive trials, an outline plan of the book was matured; and as this is, so far as I am aware, quite novel, it will be well to give a few of the reasons for adopting it.
