In particular the Fram Strait area, presently the only deep-water gateway between the Arctic Ocean and the world ocean, accounts for the Arctic region climate. It is still speculative how and when this deep-water connection opened due to its tectonic and geologic evolution, and how strong this influenced northern ocean circulations. It is assumed that the change of the northern ocean circulations correlate with long-term climate changes. This study provides a compilation of a geodynamic model of the northern North Atlantic, which is continued to the Arctic Ocean, and investigates the tectonic and bathymetric development. Due to the movements of the Eurasia, Greenland, and North American plates, as well as sediment accumulation changes, the width and seafloor depth of the Fram Strait was significantly modified since its initial break-up. Geophysical data in the northern North Atlantic and in the Arctic Ocean, gathered by the Alfred Wegener Institute during the last years, make this study possible. The results present an advanced age model of the oceanic crust. A palaeobathymetric reconstruction results in a timing of the Fram Strait opening of 25 Ma for a shallow-water exchange. From 17 Ma on, a deep-water exchange between the northern North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean was possible. To link the results of the palaeobathymetric reconstruction to the global climate history, palaeoceanographic model scenarios are calculated for the present day bathymetric configuration and the palaeobathymetry of the Middle Miocene (15 Ma), the Early Miocene (20 Ma) and the Middle Eocene (45 Ma). The study shows the complex relationship between plate tectonics, the crustal development, sediment accumulations, bathymetric changes and changes in ocean circulation in the northern North Atlantic and in the Arctic Ocean and speculates on their link to global past long-term climate changes.

Book excerpt: Combining information from onshore and offshore Mid-Norway, we propose a structural model for the Scandinavian North Atlantic passive margin from Permo-Carboniferous through Present. We re-examine the role of post-Permo-Carboniferous normal faults and define an innermost boundary fault system forming the continentward limit of the rifted margin. Crustal-scale cross-sections of the Greenland-Norway passive margins show the asymmetric nature of crustal extension between the two conjugate margins. On both margins the upper plate/lower plate geometry and the dip of major extensional normal faults change across the broad width of the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone. South of this zone on the Møre Margin (Norway), the dip of the major faults is towards the west, defining a lower plate - tilted block margin. North of the transform on the Vøring-Trøndelag Margin (Norway), the major faults dip to the east, defining an upper plate or flexural margin. In the Norwegian passive margin, the transition occurs as a progressive change of vergence of normal faults between the northern Vøring-Trøndelag Platform area and the Møre Basin. The model shows continuous separation between the two conjugate margins of Greenland and Norway, starting with a very tight fit in Late Permian time. The rifting events between Late Permian and Late Cretaceous are associated with a broadly WSW-ENE- to W-E- oriented extension while Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary extension directions are oriented NNW-SSE. These plate separation directions and the subsequent plate motion can be related to the important basin development within, and probably, to the structural evolution and geometry of, the conjugate passive margins.

Observations of bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs) in 2D and 3D seismic reflection data combined with velocity analysis, electromagnetic investigations and gas-hydrate stability zone (GHSZ) modelling, provide the necessary insights for academic interests and hydrocarbon industries to understand the potential extent and volume of gas hydrates in a wide range of tectonic settings of continental margins. Gas hydrates control the largest and most dynamic reservoir of global carbon. Especially 4D, 3D seismic but also 2D seismic data provide compelling sub-seabed images of their dynamical behavior. Sub-seabed imaging techniques increase our understanding of the controlling mechanisms for the distribution and migration of gas before it enters the gas-hydrate stability zone. As methane hydrate stability depends mainly on pressure, temperature, gas composition and pore water chemistry, gas hydrates are usually found in ocean margin settings where water depth is more than 300 m and gas migrates upward from deeper geological formations. This highly dynamic environment may precondition the stability of continental slopes as evidenced by geohazards and gas expelled from the sea floor. This book provides new insights into variations in the character and existence of gas hydrates and BSRs in various geological environments, as well as their dynamics. The potentially dynamic behavior of this natural carbon system in a warming world, its current and future impacts on a variety of Earth environments can now be adequately evaluated by using the information provided in the world atlas. This book is relevant for students, researchers, governmental agencies and oil and gas professionals. Some familiarity with seismic data and some basic understanding of geology and tectonics are recommended.
