They focused on five metallogenic provinces across Europe; the Precambrian Fennoscandian Shield, the Upper Palaeozoic Urals, the Variscides of France and SW Iberia, the Alpine-Balkan-Carpathian-Dinaride belt and sediment-hosted deposits of Europe. Because of the long and well-known tectonic history of Europe and the diversity of ore deposits, linkages between geodynamics and ore deposit evolution have been established and new insights into mineralizing fluids and ore formation processes have been gained. Presented as a set of individual review papers and a final synthesis, this book offers a coherent and structured appraisal of geodynamics and metallogeny in Europe, with valuable lessons for mineral exploration and research throughout the world.

L'intrusion hôte n'exerce qu'un rôle passif dans leur genèse et fonctionne uniquement comme un réceptacle structural très favorable. La minéralisation est temporellement liée à un stade d'exhumation du bâti et à l'addition d'un flux de chaleur dans une croûte épaissie. Le piégeage de l'or au contact des sulfures microfracturées interviendrait à 5-10 km de profondeur par dilution d'un fluide salin précoce par des eaux superficielles.

Book excerpt: Le gisement épithermal de type "high-sulfidation" à or et cuivre de Chelopech en Bulgarie s'est développé au Crétacé supérieur, dans les roches andésitiques, phréatomagmatiques, pyroclastiques et sédimentaires, qui témoignent d'un environnement côtier du volcanisme. L'étude géochronologique a donné un âge maximum de 91.45 Ma pour la formation du gisement. Cette étude permet d'établir la forte influence de ces différentes lithologies lors de la mise en place de la minéralisation et du développement des brèches hydrothermales encaissantes. De plus, l'étude structurale du gisement de Chelopech a mis en évidence le contrôle par des failles des fluides minéralisateurs et la déformation du gisement pendant l'orogenèse Alpine tertiaire. Les fluides à l'origine de la minéralisation sont essentiellement des vapeurs volcaniques avec une composante d'eau météorique. Le gisement de Chelopech est comparable aux grands gisements épithermaux de type "high-sulfidation" mondiaux.

Book excerpt: Macro- and microscopic and microanalytical tools have been used to characterize the two mineralization stage present at the Cordilleran Cerro de Pasco deposit. The first stage, comprising a large pyrite-quartz body followed by vertical pyrrhotite pipes zoned Zn-Pb ores bearing Fe-rich sphalerite is of predominantly low sulfidation states. The second mineralization stage is composed of enargite-pyrite veins and well zoned carbonate replacement bodies bearing Fe-poor sphalerite is of high to intermediate sulfidation states. U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar dating reveals that the magmatic activity lasted 350 ky (15.40±0.07-15.16±0.03 Ma) and the second mineralization stage around 100 ky (14.54±0.08-14.41±0.07 Ma). Both mineralization stages precipitated from a two end-member fluid: a hot, non-saline isotopically exchanged fluid likely of meteoric origin (200°C) and a hot saline magmatic fluid (350-380°C, up to 8 wt% NaC1equiv.). A strong dilution of metal-rich saline magmatic fluids with isotopically exchanged meteoric water is postulated for the ore-forming fluids.
