Book excerpt: Three women scholars. Three lives changed. And a dash of romance. Blessing in Disguise by Sarah M. Eden 1858, Dublin Fred Fitzsimmons will soon graduate Trinity College. With only a few weeks, he must continue safeguarding the enormous secret he's been keeping throughout his time in Dublin: that he is actually Winnifred, a woman in disguise. The medical degree she is a breath away from claiming would allow her to save her beloved village. But having her secret revealed would land her in jail. So when Liam Rafferty, a fellow student with a reputation for unravelling even the most complicated of mysteries, grows suspicious of "Fred," more lives than merely hers hang in the balance. An Unexpected Education by Michele Paige Holmes Nineteen-year-old Esther Sessions has survived the slums of Liverpool, and her abusive home, by holding onto a promise she made to her dying mother long ago--to keep reading. When a factory explosion frees her from her oppressive life and provides an opportunity to attend Bedford Women's College in London, Esther determines to succeed at school, knowing her education will ensure a future in which she might provide for herself and never be dependent upon any man. From the first moments of her arrival, Professor John Lind begins challenging her beliefs about everything from classical literature to algebra to--men. His kindness is something she has never encountered in a man before, and the generosity of his heart might just reach through the barriers surrounding Esther's. Good Heir Hunting by Nancy Campbell Allen Ellie Perkins has achieved her dream of establishing her own Kindergarten school to serve the needs of Liverpool's orphans. As a woman who has graduated from college and pursued a career, she has faced opposition and contention from all sides. Her first year is a success, however, and as she begins the second, she is caught by surprise when her newest hire marries and moves away, leaving a class of orphans without a teacher. Solicitor Graham Lucas, meanwhile, appears on her school doorstep, having narrowed a search for his employer's heir to one of the students in the now teacher-less class. Ellie sees a temporary fix to her problem that will benefit both her and the handsome solicitor. Graham will substitute the kindergarten class, while Ellie searches for a replacement. Unbeknownst to them all, however, is the lurking presence of a jealous relative who covets the young heir's position, and who will stop at nothing to take his place. Also at risk is Ellie's heart and hard-won career. Can she truly take a chance on a handsome substitute teacher bent on winning her love?

Book The gentlewoman s remembrance

Download or read book The gentlewoman s remembrance written by Isaac Stephens and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A microhistory of a never-married English gentlewoman named Elizabeth Isham, this book centres on an extremely rare piece of women's writing - a recently discovered 60,000-word spiritual autobiography held in Princeton's manuscript collections that she penned around 1639. The autobiography is unmatched in providing an inside view of her family relations, her religious beliefs, her reading habits and, most sensationally, the reasons why she chose never to marry despite desires to the contrary held by her male kin, particularly Sir John Isham, her father. Based on the autobiography, combined with extensive research of the Isham family papers now housed at the county record office in Northampton, this book restores our historical memory of Elizabeth and her female relations, expanding our understanding and knowledge about patriarchy, piety and singlehood in early modern England.

Book Magick Mayhem and Mavericks

Download or read book Magick Mayhem and Mavericks written by Cathy Cobb and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science popularizer Cathy Cobb takes a unique approach to explaining the concepts of physical chemistry by telling the story of the geniuses and eccentrics who made groundbreaking discoveries in this fascinating field that bridges chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The result is entertaining and illuminating. Her tale is about the colorful varieties of human character as well as the struggles to understand the workings of the material world. Through true stories of rebels, recluses, heroes, and rogues, she helps the reader to discover how one idea built upon another and how an elegant discipline arose out of centuries of difficult trial and error. Starting with the ancient Greeks, Cobb takes the reader on a sweeping tour of history. She shows how an understanding of basic chemical properties gradually arose out of ancient Greeks mathematics, Muslim science, medieval "magick," and the healing arts. Her tour continues through the scientific revolution, the emergence of physical chemistry as an independent discipline, and up to the present. Today, physical chemists contribute to the fields of chemical physiology, chemical oscillations and waves, quantum mechanics, and the curious and promising field of nanotechnology. This absorbing, eloquently written history of science is loaded with intuitive imagery, everyday analogies, and a colorful cast of characters who are guaranteed to entertain as well as edify.

Book Rules for Gentlemen

Download or read book Rules for Gentlemen written by Cameron M. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the world is torn by divisions, if the peoples are through into the confusion of mutual hostility, how is the world to be healed, how are the peoples to be reconciled, if not through such a new chivalry? You are being called into battle as a gentleman. And this battle consists first and foremost in ruling over yourself, and then in bringing the peace of harmony with God into the world around you. As a gentleman, you are called to uphold justice and to resist injustice, to serve that which is holy in the world, without reservation and without salary, to care for the weak, the persecuted, and the wronged, to take care of creation as it groans, and of the bruised reed, because it is God's will that it not be broken. In my own of research and teaching over the years I've been able to delve into chivalric literature and the evolution of nobility, and what I've uncovered from the tomes of history I share now with you, men and women of all ages, in this simple guide -- a chivalric code drawn from the ancient text that over the centuries gave birth to the ideal of a Christian chivalry. I've been guided since I was a young child by the principles laid out in the Rule of St. Benedict, and recently completed a new translation of the ancient work. It also happens, that historically the code of chivalry for the knights of the middle ages was drawn from and explicitly modeled on the way of life of the benedictine monks, and later by the mendicant friars. In what follows, the text of the Introduction, the Conclusion, and the "Tools for Doing Good" are taken directly from the 1,500 year old text, the Rule of St. Benedict. The rules themselves, as well as the "Way of Perfection", are principles drawn from or summaries of the more salient points enumerated by St. Benedict that serve as a firm foundation for a chivalric code to which a man or woman of our day can pledge themselves to uphold. You see, to be a gentleman or gentlewoman is not about merely following some set of rules or book of etiquette. It is about pledging yourself to a code of honor, and striving to conform all aspects of your life to it. Chivalry, the way of the Christian knight, both in its various historical manifestations, and in its eternal spirit, exists to guide men and women in how to live uprightly in the world -- to conquer themselves and achieve self-mastery in service to a higher good. Such a gentleman or gentlewoman is sent into the world to resist injustice and to preserve justice, to to care for the weak, the persecuted, and the wronged, to take care of creation as it groans, and of the bruised reed, because it is God's will that it not be broken. Such a chivalry means a responsibility, a responsibility he or she can only carry out by serving that which is holy in the world, the hidden Grail and the order that radiates out from it."There must always be men [and women] who serve that which is holy in this world without reservation and without salary, caring for the weak, the persecuted and the insulted, renewing the authority of law and fighting against injustice. The knight exists for the sake of everyone; that is his [or her] proper position in the world." -- Hans Urs Von BalthasarThus, inspired by the need for a renewal of this kind of knighthood in our own day, and the desire to see my children become true gentlemen and gentlewomen, I compiled this new code of chivalry drawn from Saint Benedict's Rule for Beginners -- the very code itself that has guided and directed the lives of countless men and women to become true gentlemen and gentlewomen for over 1,500 years, and continues to breathe new life into the world today.

Book excerpt: Exploring the works of key women writers within their cultural, artistic and socio-political contexts, this book considers changes in the perception of women in early modern China. The sixteenth century brought rapid developments in technology, commerce and the publishing industry that saw women emerging in new roles as both consumers and producers of culture. This book examines the place of women in the cultural elite and in society more generally, reconstructing examples of particular women’s personal experiences, and retracing the changing roles of women from the late Ming to the early Qing era (1580-1700). Providing rich detail of exceptionally fine, interesting and engaging literary works, this book opens fascinating new windows onto the lives, dreams, nightmares, anxieties and desires of the authors and the world out of which they emerged.
