Book excerpt: Karen Pryor’s clear and entertaining explanation of behavioral training methods made Don’t Shoot the Dog a bestselling classic with revolutionary insights into animal—and human—behavior. In her groundbreaking approach to improving behavior, behavioral biologist Karen Pryor says, “Whatever the task, whether keeping a four-year-old quiet in public, housebreaking a puppy, coaching a team, or memorizing a poem, it will go fast, and better, and be more fun, if you know how to use reinforcement.” Now Pryor clearly explains the underlying principles of behavioral training and reveals how this art can be applied to virtually any common situation. And best of all, she tells how to do it without yelling threats, force, punishment, guilt trips—or shooting the dog. From the eight methods for putting an end to all kinds of undesirable behavior to the ten laws of “shaping” behavior, Pryor helps you combat your own addictions and deal with such difficult problems as a moody spouse, an impossible teen, or an aged parent. Plus, there’s also incredibly helpful information on house training the dog, improving your tennis game, keeping the cat off the table, and much more! “In the course of becoming a renowned dolphin trainer, Karen Pryor learned that positive reinforcement…is even more potent that prior scientific work had suggested…Don’t Shoot the Dog looks like the very best on the subject—a full-scale mind-changer” (The Coevolution Quarterly). Learn why pet owners rave, “This book changed our lives!” and how these pioneering techniques can work for you, too.

Book A Dog Beside Me

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Cadman
  • Publisher : SPORTSMAN'S PRESS
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780948253638
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book A Dog Beside Me written by Arthur Cadman and published by SPORTSMAN'S PRESS. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his long and varied life, Arthur Cadman has always had a gundog, usually a labrador, at his side. In a book full of humour and anecdote, he now recalls the many remarkable dogs he has trained and also some of the unusual dogs owned by shooting companions that he has encountered along the way. He begins by discussing the various breeds and their aptitude for particular roles in the shooting field. For wildfowling of which Arthur Cadman has vast experience, a dog must be strong enough to retrieve a goose from a fast flowing river; his great goose dog, Bear, was his favourite companion on many memorable days. For stalking he favours the larger species such as Labrador, Alastian sheepdog, GSP or the German Wachtel. His labrador, Mole, is remembered with affection as his finest deer dog. In later chapters he discusses intelligence in dogs and suggests names he has used down the years until the arrival of his latest dog, Happy. He gives some invaluable hints for use in training dogs and for their daily care. His chapter on deer dogs gives interesting insights into the preparation of a dog for stalking and remarks that otherwise splendid dogs sometimes just do not take to it. He recalls books about dogs that he has enjoyed or found helpful. Writing about picking-up, he remarks that this can be one of the greatest pleasures in the shooting field especially when one has a young dog in training. His book is a wonderful blend of reminiscence and practical advice which will appeal to every shooter who relishes the rewards, and inevitable setbacks, in training a young dog to share his shooting days and indeed his life. John Tickner's illustrations are a delight.

This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author writes from his then thirty-seven years of practical experience, beginning with his first successfully trained Pointer as a teenager. The eight chapters concentrating on the "breaking" or training of Pointers and Setters will prove of enormous interest to shooting men, field triallers, and falconers. The author's admiration for the reasoning power of the dog, which makes itself evident on every other page, will assuredly be shared by all who read this book. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive.
