This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gentle Pioneer, Being the Story of the Early Days in the New West T was a grave little company which sat around the big fireplace of the Kennedy farm-house one night in March. Outside the wind howled and blustered, and even though a huge log fire Shot its flames in fine fashion up the wide Chimney, there was necessity for sand-bags at the door, and for heavy homespun curtains at the windows to keep out the insistent draughts which would make their way through every Chink and cranny. The younger children cuddled close together on the hearth, their mother from time to time looking up from her work to watch them thoughtfully; their father, Silent and moody, gazed into the snapping fire, while Agnes herself, old enough to understand better than her brothers and Sisters the cause of the unusual serious ness, paused more than once in her task of knitting to steal a glance at her parents. Book A Gentle Madness

Download or read book A Gentle Madness written by Nicholas A. Basbanes and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gentle Madness continues to astound and delight readers about the passion and expense a collector is willing to make in pursuit of the book. The book captures that last moment in time when collectors pursued their passions in dusty bookshops and street stalls, high stakes auctions, and the subterfuge worthy of a true bibliomaniac. An adventure among the afflicted, A Gentle Madness is vividly anecdotal and thoroughly researched. Nicholas Basbanes brings an investigative reporter's heart to illuminate collectors past and present in their pursuit of bibliomania. A New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

Book The Delicate Pioneer

Download or read book The Delicate Pioneer written by Sally Watson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-02-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felicity was far too delicate to be pioneering to Oregon Territory! Ironically, it was her parents who died en route, leaving her with her Uncle Jon and that infuriating tease Arne, also orphaned, who jeered at the ailing, self-pitying Missy Flissy. And Seattle turned out nothing like a southern plantation with sunshine and slaves: it was dense rainy forest with six houses, Indians and wild animals. Surprisingly, the challenge suited her. Slowly she made friends with the Indians and discovered a love of animals. Chief Seattle befriended and encouraged her to make 'strong shining thoughts'. She cut off her limp colorless plaits, tamed feral cats, learned to cook and housekeep-and to tease Arne back! They had almost become friends, when Uncle Jon's family arrived-including the beautiful, charming, golden-haired and genteel Adelaide who had always reduced Felicity to sullen inferiority. And she was loudly horrified to find Felicity tanned, sturdy, crop-curled, barefoot, cooking in a log cabin, on friendly terms with Indians and skunks. She was also too refined, delicate and ladylike to do anything at all. And to make it worse, Arne fell heels over head for her charm and beauty. But Felicity had the last word, after all.

Book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home

Download or read book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home written by Phoebe Goodell Judson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoebe Judson was a young bride in 1853 when she and her husband crossed the plains from Ohio to the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory. She was ninety-five when this book was first published in 1925. The years between were spent in “a pioneer’s search for an ideal home” and in living there, when it was finally found at the head of the Nooksack River, almost on the Canadian border. Phoebe Judson’s account of the journey west is based on daily diary entries detailing her fear, excitement, and exhaustion. At the end of the trail, the Judsons encountered hardships aplenty, causing them to abandon a farm and business in Olympia before their arrival in the Nooksack Valley. During the Indian Wars they holed up in a fort at Claquato. In time, Phoebe overcame her fear of the Indians, learned the Chinook language, and won their friendship. All this is told in vivid detail by a woman of great dignity and charm whom readers will long remember. Susan Armitage, professor of history at Washington State University, calls A Pioneer’s Search for an Ideal Home a “classic pioneering account,” important for its woman’s point of view.
