Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genetic History of the New England Theology The chief peculiarity of the style of the book is the large use made of quotation from the authors discussed. My object has been, not merely to secure thereby the true objec tivity of the report I have given, but also, in the certainty that very few of my readers will have access to the originals, to-give them an acquaintance at first hand, though brief, with these pioneers and fathers of our theology. Book A Genetic History of New England Theology Routledge Revivals

Download or read book A Genetic History of New England Theology Routledge Revivals written by Frank Hugh Foster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1907, this text provides a scientific treatment of New England theology and American dogmatic history. Frank Hugh Foster analyses the eighteenth-century rise of the school of New England theology, which became the dominant school of thought in New England congregationalism and, as argued by Foster, a 'world phenomenon'. The chapters arise from readings of the various distinguished views of such contemporaries as Jonathan Edwards, Joseph Bellamy and Samuel Hopkins, placing them within the historical and theological context in which they developed. A fascinating and detailed title, this reissue will be of value to students of theology and Church history with a particular interest in the development of American religious thought.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Theological History of New England In sketching the history of my own denomination, and of others which have arisen, I have endeavored that my state ments should be fair and truthful, and not of a nature to give needless ofl'ence. Never was there a nobler band of Christian men and women than the first settlers of New England. Yet they fell into some errors, and made some mistakes, - mis takes which might have been fatal to their enterprise, had not God arrested the natural course of them by the outpour ing of his Spirit. Let us endeavor to profit by their mistakes, as well as by their noble example; and let us seek our s'e curity at all times, in the favor and blessing of our covenant God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of the New England Churches, Vol. 1 A few words will sufficiently explain to the reader of this book the design of the author. The history of Protestant Christianity in the United States Of America is the history, not of a national church, but Of voluntary churches. I have attempted to show how it began, and to trace the origin and development of the idea which generated the churches Of New England. It is hardly necessary to say that the Baptist churches - a name which, in the United States, comprehends more churches than any other save oneu - are constituted on the same platform Of polity with the church which came in the May ower. I have had no occasion to speak of them or of their in uence in giving character to our American civilization; inasmuch as the history Of churches bearing that name, on this side of the Atlantic, begins later than the latest date in the volume now submitted to the public. It has been claimed for those churches that, from the age of the Reformation onward, they have been always fore most and always consistent in maintaining the doctrine Of religious liberty. Let me not be understood as calling in question their right to so great an honor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Before Jonathan Edwards, Adriaan Neele seeks to balance the recent academic attention to the developments of intellectual history after Jonathan Edwards. Neele presents the first comprehensive study of Edwards's use of Reformed orthodox and Protestant scholastic primary sources in the context of the challenges of orthodoxy in his day. Despite the breadth of Edwards scholarship, his use of primary sources has been little analyzed. Yet, as Neele proves, Edwards's thinking on the importance of these primary sources has significant implications not only for the status of the New England theology of pre-Revolutionary America but also for our understanding of Edwards today. This volume locates Edwards's ideas in the context of the theological and philosophical currents of his day, as well as in the pre-modern exchange of books and information during the colonial period. The pre-Revolutionary status of theology and philosophy in the wake of the Enlightenment had many of the same problems we see in our theological education today with respect to the use and appropriation of classical theology in a 21st-century context. Ideas about the necessity of classical primary sources of Christianity in sustaining our theological education are once again becoming important, and Edwards offers many relevant insights. Edwards was not unique in his deployment of these primary sources; many New England pastors, including Cotton Mather (1663-1728), preached and wrote about the necessity of orthodox theology. Edwards's distinction came in his thinking about the issues set forth in these sources at a transitional moment in the history of Christian thought.

Excerpt: ... chaetek vi. later discussions--new haven theology. New England Theology did not take into its embrace any new doctrines after Dr. Edwards, in 1785, made his clear and permanently adopted statements concerning the atonement. The theologizing tendency of the New England mind, however, by no means ceased at that time; on the contrary some of the warmest discussions were subsequent to that date, but the aim was either to defend the traditional theology or to give more discriminating expression to doctrines already under discussion. Unitarianism, New Haven theology and the publications of Dr. Bushnell, will at once suggest themselves in this connection. What has within the last few years been known as the new theology is not sufficiently developed to be assigned its exact place in religious history. Dr. Bushnell's various essays and treatises related to a large number of theological topics, but have not awakened permanent interest except upon the atonement. His views on this theme have, by anticipation, been already spoken of. The Unitarian movement was originally directed against the evangelical system as a whole, though the Trinity was made the prominent topic of dispute. The orthodox contention at this point was simply a defence of the traditional faith, with the exception, perhaps, of the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son. This discussion led, however, incidentally to a review, at a later date, of some points of Hopkinsianism and may be briefly noticed. The tendencies to liberalism appeared early in the 18th century, perhaps late in the 17th, and were fostered by the writings of Whiston, Taylor and other English authors whose names have already been given. The contrast between the liberals and conservatives was more clearly...

Download or read book After Jonathan Edwards written by Oliver D. Crisp and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely regarded as one of the major thinkers in the Christian tradition and an important and influential figure in American theology. After Jonathan Edwards is a collection of specially commissioned essays that track his intellectual legacies from the work of his immediate disciples that formed the New Divinity movement in colonial New England, to his impact upon European traditions and modern Asia. It is a unique interdisciplinary contribution to the reception of Edwardsian ideas, with scholars of Edwards being brought together with scholars of New England theology and early American history to produce a groundbreaking examination of the ways in which New England Theology flourished, how themes in Edwards's thought were taken up and changed by representatives of the school, and its lasting influence on the shape of American Christianity.
