The sea thus im peded, and the lower part of the bed of the river becoming dry ground, occasioned the building of Yarmouth. There exists positive evidence of Norwich being a fishing town in the reign of C'nute, for Alfric, bishop of East Anglia at that time, having bestowed his Bag}; by Norwich, (the ground on which the church of St. Lawrence afterwards stood), on the abbey of St. Edmundsbury, it paid an annual ground rent to that monastery of a last of herrings.
