This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of French Porcelain The history of French porcelain must always be full of interest to the English reader because, beyond the intrinsic merits of the material and the marvellous technical skill displayed in the finest examples of French porcelain, we can never forget that the earliest English porcelains, particularly those of Bow and Chelsea, owed so much, both directly and indirectly, to our neighbours across the Channel. Download or read book A History and Description of English Porcelain Classic Reprint written by William Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of English Porcelain For many years there has been real need of a work on English Porcelain which should occupy the gap between the elaborate monographs of single factories by Binns, Haslem, and Owen, and the admirable but brief general sketch by Professor A. H. Church. The present volume is an attempt to remove this deficiency by giving, on a sufficiently extended scale and with adequate illustration, a connected and comprehensive account of the origin and progress of porcelain making in England. Though the mere fact that the author is a practical potter cannot in itself prove sufficient qualification for such a task, the experience necessarily gained in the daily routine of a factory must be of value in attempting to appraise the work of the potters of past generations. For the first time, at all events, the historical and artistic development of English. Porcelain is interpreted by the light of technical and scientific knowledge gained in the industry itself; the fruits of years of study of museum collections and documentary and traditional information ripened by still more years of experience in actual manufacture. Having no prejudices in favour of any particular individual or factory it is only natural that my views should not always coincide with those of writers whose work has been conceived in a vein of personal eulogy, which puts impartial criticism out of the question. Book Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture Classic Reprint written by William Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture The interest of Porcelain is perennial, and though book succeeds book, the subject remains unexhausted. The aim of this little book is to supply the collector and student of porcelain, as well as the general reader, with a clear and connected account of the various kinds of porcelain made in Asia and Europe. It has taken me more years than I like to count to arrive at the ideas set down in the following pages, and I hope that, as a result of my labours in sifting, weighing, selecting, and arranging, the knowledge gained from so many diverse sources, others may be saved a great deal of unnecessary trouble. This is in no sense a technical treatise, yet it is based on a practical experience in many branches of the Potter's Art, which has, I trust, enabled me to exhibit certain aspects of the subject in a way that will be new to the bulk of my readers. Throughout the work I have been careful to explain how the artistic qualities of the various porcelains have been influenced by the nature of the materials and processes used in different countries; the information being of such a character as will enable a collector to find the scientific explanation of the differences which an artist feels. Many difficulties have to be faced in a work necessarily so compressed as this. In the first place, it is impossible to keep the treatment accurately in scale. Naturally, perhaps, in an English book the records of the English factories occupy more space than the artistic merit of their productions would warrant; while German porcelain makes so little appeal to our English tastes, that a German might, not unreasonably, complain that the factories of his country had received less attention than they deserve. Others may think that Japanese porcelain has been somewhat slighted, but I have honestly tried to give a picture that should represent as truly as possible, within the prescribed limits, the development of every important kind of porcelain known. It is, perhaps, necessary to say a word in explanation of the attention given to the Letters of Pere d'Entrecolles. Book The Pottery and Porcelain of the United States

Download or read book The Pottery and Porcelain of the United States written by Edwin Atlee Barber and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pottery and Porcelain of the United States: An Historical Review of American Ceramic Art From the Earliest Times to the Present Day Foreign writers would have the world believe that the United States can boast of no ceramic history. Even our own chroniclers have, singularly enough, neglected a branch of our industrial progress which is not altogether insignificant nor devoid of interest. On the contrary, it can be shown that the fictile art is almost as ancient in this country as in Great Britain, and has been developed in almost parallel, though necessarily narrower, lines. The need of a history of the Pottery Industry in America has long been felt, and has led to the preparation of the present volume, which, it is hoped, will be found to possess some interest to the student of ceramics, as well as to the collector. The author claims that his work is not a mere compilation, but has been based almost entirely upon thorough personal investigations. Some of the time-honored fallacies which have been perpetuated by compilers have been omitted from this record, and special care has been taken to avoid the use of statements which could not be substantiated. Book A Cultural History of the Atlantic World 1250 1820

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Atlantic World 1250 1820 written by John K. Thornton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of the Atlantic World, 1250–1820 explores the idea that strong links exist in the histories of Africa, Europe and North and South America. John K. Thornton provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the Atlantic Basin before 1830 by describing political, social and cultural interactions between the continents' inhabitants. He traces the backgrounds of the populations on these three continental landmasses brought into contact by European navigation. Thornton then examines the political and social implications of the encounters, tracing the origins of a variety of Atlantic societies and showing how new ways of eating, drinking, speaking and worshipping developed in the newly created Atlantic World. This book uses close readings of original sources to produce new interpretations of its subject.

Book A Book of Porcelain

Book Catalogue of a Collection of Continental Porcelain

Download or read book Catalogue of a Collection of Continental Porcelain written by A. Wollaston Franks and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of Continental Porcelain: Lent and Described Many years ago I formed a collection of marked specimens of European porcelain, but from want of space I decided to confine my attention to English and Oriental examples, and I ceded to my friend the late Rev. Thomas Stani'forth, of Storrs, the continental specimens, which formed the nucleus of the remarkable collection which he brought together, now in a great measure dispersed. Other collectors of continental porcelain were Captain Reynolds, Mr. Octavius Morgan. Mr. Marryat, Mr. Loraine Baldwin, Mr. H. G. Bohn, Lady Charlotte Schreiber, Mr. Walker Joy, and others, all of whose gatherings have also been dispersed. Little by little a fresh collection grew up, partly derived from those above mentioned, and this is the one now exhibited. It will be readily seen that it is not composed to any great extent of the finest specimens of the Ceramic Art, but is chiefly documentary. There are none of the chefs d' uvre of Saxon porcelain, such as those exhibited at the Bethnal Green Museum by the Hon. W. F. Maasey-Mainwaring, nor the marvels of the Royal Factory at Sevres, well exemplified in the bequest of Mr. Jones to the South Kensington Museum. Still the collection has its merits, and every day such specimens are becoming rarer. The numerous German museums, established on the same lines as the South Kensington Museum, are absorbing marked specimens of their own and other fabrics, and German and French dealers are apt to carry off such examples as pass through the London market. Most of the continental fabrics are represented; perhaps the later French makers le-s well, as I have somewhat neglected the hard paste porcelain of France. I ought to add that in preparing this catalogue I have been very materially assisted by my friend and successor Mr. Charles H. Read, who, in addition to other kindly help, has drawn very carefully all the marks that appear in the plates.
