Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Historico-Critical Introduction to the Old Testament The work of which a translation is now presented to the British Public was the mature production of a theologian distinguished by that vast and varied learning which may be regarded as peculiarly characteristic of the modern German divines, and at the same time. Imbued with that reverence for the Bible as the Word of God, and that lively apprehension of its spiritual truths, which unhappily are too often found wanting in that quarter. I have undertaken, he says in his preface, to write this work from that stand-point which, through God's grace, has been showed to me - from the inward and firm conviction that the Object Of investigation is God's holy word, given to mankind sunk in sin and misery, for the purpose of guiding them in the way of salvation and peace. Vvhosoever has, through the mercy of the Lord, been led so as to have learned to understand at his hand the word of life, and through this has been not only enlightened, but sanctified and blessed, cannot but feel constrained to utter, according to the calling, and in the measure vouchsafed to him by the Lord, a testimony for the grace which has been displayed even unto him. As it is written, I believe therefore I speak, ' so the theologian, the servant of the Church of Jesus Christ, knows that it is impossible to construct a theological science which is not founded on the truth - more particularly on the truth as revealed in the Word and his desire and most zealous endeavour, in keeping with this, is to erect on this basis a living edifice of science, the corner-stone of which shall be that besides which no other can be laid by any man. Such an one knows also that he thus labours not in the service of man, and on a vain and profitless work, but in the service of the Head of the Church, who has placed him as a steward of the mysteries of God, that he may be found faithful in the day of the appearing of Jesus Christ, viii translator's preface. Since the year 1856 the idea has gradually strengthened in the author's mind that there is room for an Introduction to the Old Testament, in which processes should be given as well as results. The space allotted to him in a volume published in that year was too limited to satisfy the necessary requirements. He did for the Old Testament then what appeared right and proper. But he felt that he had not done full justice either to the subject or himself. Longer time, deeper reflection, and repeated investigation were demanded, because difficult themes cannot be satisfactorily settled without protracted study. Accordingly since 1857 his mind has been occupied with the chief questions relating to the books of the Old Testament; with the view of arriving at such results respecting them as the evidence seems to justify. The process has been slow and gradual, because he has often striven against new views and tried to uphold traditional sentiments as long as he could. He has thought it a duty to maintain conservative opinions whenever he could honestly do so. In cases where they could not stand the test of true criticism they had to be abandoned. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. This dying charge related to the young king's faithful observance of the divine laws; to Joab, whose "hoar head he was not to let go down to the grave in peace;" to the sons of Barzillai, the Gileadite; to Shimei, whom he was to hold guilty for his insulting conduct, and to bring down his hoary head to the grave with blood (1-11). After this Adonijah made interest with Bathsheba to ask for him, from her son, Abishag the maid, who had cherished the old king in marriage. The petition was presented in due form, but was refused; and being construed as an indication of a fresh design on the throne, the king ordered him to be put to death. In pursuance of the same vindictive measures recommended by David before his death, Abiathar was deprived of the priesthood, and banished to Anathoth. His life was spared because he had borne the ark before David, and sympathised in David's afflictions. On hearing of this, Joab took refuge in the sanctuary; but that did not save him, for Benaiah was ordered to go thither and slay him, which he did accordingly. Benaiah was put in the post of Joab; and Zadok in that of Abiathar. Shimei was sent for by the king to Jerusalem, ordered to build an house there, and never to leave the place on the peril of his life. But at the end of three years he went to Gath in pursuit of two slaves. When he had returned with them to Jerusalem the king sent for him, reminded him of what he had done to David, and ordered him to be slain (12-46). The third chapter describes Solomon's marriage to the daughter of the king of Egypt; and how he and the people sacrificed in high places, which was contrary to the law. The chief high place was Gibeon, where God appeared to him in a dream, and promised to give him not only wisdom in answer to his petition, but also riches and honour. Returning to Jerusalem, he offered sacrifice before the ark of the covenant, and made a feast to all his servants (1-15). Immediately after, he gave a proof of his wisdom in determining the real mother of a child; so that his fame was spread abroad (16-28). The fourth chapter commences with a list of his principal officers in different departments (1-6). This is followed by another, in which it is said that he had twelve officers over all Israel to furnish supplies for the royal household, eacli a month in the year.
