Book A Gazetteer of Ethnology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Gazetteer of Ethnology Classic Reprint written by Akira Matsumura and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gazetteer of Ethnology In reading works on Philology, Sociology and Anthropology we frequently find names of races and peoples mentioned without any hint as to their locality. The inconvenience of this is heightened by the fact that there appear to be no works specially dealing with this subject, by reference to which the deficiency could be remedied. Thinking it would be very desirable, if such a defect can be removed even in the slightest degree, I began to compile this book in the spring of 1902, but owing to the lack of suitable reference books in this country, the work has progressed more slowly than I anticipated and even in its present state does not afford me complete satisfaction. Nevertheless, having collected eight thousand tribe-names of all countries, I decided to publish the present book. There being no dictionaries of this kind in Europe and America, the two languages, English and Japanese were especially used. The present volume being compiled with the above object, the distributions of races and peoples in past and present times are mentioned, and at the same time, I have endeavoured to add as many synonyms of them as possible, and to explain the derivation and meaning of the terms, while their ethnical relations and characters are omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethnology of the Salinan Indians As data on many important points was entirely missing, due to the almost complete loss of aboriginal culture among the present Indians of the northern missions, material has been incorporated from various other sources. Through the courtesy of the Bureau of American Ethnology access has been had to certain ethnological notes collected by Dr. Henshaw in 1884 from informants now deceased, and other items of importance have been gleaned from the writings of various travellers and visitors to the missions. Notable among the latter is Alexander S. Taylor, who visited the missions in 1856, sent many of his manuscripts and other material of the mission period to wash lugton, and recounted his observations in The California Farmer in 1860. Book The Karen People of Burma

Download or read book The Karen People of Burma written by Rev Harry Ignatius Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Karen People of Burma: A Study in Anthropology and Ethnology To many a visitor to Burma, who views the country from the deck of an Irrawaddy River steamer or from the window of a railway carriage, there appears to belittle difference between the Karen and the Burman. This is not strange, for many individuals of the non Burman tribes wear the Burmese costume and speak the Burmese language; and they present no markedly different characteristics in feature or color of skin. I have often heard the remark that there is no difference between the Burman and the Karen. It is doubtless because the Government of Burma recognizes that there is a difference in the tribal characteristics, customs, and religion that it has adopted the Wise policy of publishing a series of complete studies, of which this purports to be one, of these various peoples. If the reader will have the patience to read these pages, it is hoped that he will realize that, though the Karen have lived for genera tions in the closest proximity to the Burmese, they preserve their own racial traits, which are quite distinct from those of their more volatile neighbors with whom they have had little in common. This work deals more particularly with the Sgaw branch of the Karen people. My own acquaintance has been more intimate with this tribe, though I have known many of the other groups. This circumstance, together with the fact that the Bwe and Taungthu peoples have already been described in the Upper Burma Gazetteer, as well as the limitations of space, has led me to limit my discussion to brief references to the other tribes. But I am convinced that in the main the Sgaw exhibit the general characteristics that are truly Karen in the broadest sense of the term. I have also omitted any detailed study of the large mass of Karen folklore, which may possibly be incorporated in some future study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typographical Gazetteer: Attempted A few words of Introduction appear necessary, in order to account for the appearance of this volume. Fifty-two years ago, I was appointed one of the two Sub librarians of the Bodleian Library at Oxford, an office which at once brought me, into immediate contact with more than volumes of printed books, besides several thousand manuscripts, in many languages and of almost every age. Of course I was bewildered with the vast mass before me; possessed by a dim and misty notion of the immense value of the' literary treasures partly committed to my care, but without any distinct idea of the actual contents of the great repository, or of its strength in any particular department of literature. But light broke in upon me by degrees. Through the daily work of arranging and cataloguing books, and of making searches for the use of persons who came to consult the library for various branches of study, I began to acquire some general acquaintance with its contents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from M'culloch's Universal Gazetteer, Vol. 1 of 2: A Dictionary, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, of the Various Countries, Places, and Principal Natural Objects in the World In the English edition, the sources are generally given whence the informa tion contained in the several articles is derived, and the same is done with respect to the articles which relate to the United States. This will be done in the American edition, exceptin in the articles on the United States, as these references will be valuable to t 080 who are dis caed to pursue their inquiries beyond the bounds of a gazetteer; but, as we 0 e to present a more com plete and correct account of this country than can be derived from the authori ties quoted by the author, many of which are very valuable, but some of which have ceased to be at present correct, we shall omit a mention of the sources of our information, which would exceedingly encumber the work. In the con struction of this part of the work, fifty volumes, and as many state or other local maps, containing the latest and most authentic information, have been con sulted, besides a written corres cadence from intelligent men in all parts of the country. The late very valuab e United States census and statistics have con tributed very much to enrich this work. To encumber the work by attaching to each article the sources whence the information has been derived, would, it is believed, he unprofitable, as they are numerous. N o fact has been stated but upon what is considered the best authority. Our aim has been to present to the citizens of the United States a work, in regard to their country, on which entire reliance can be laced. A faultless work, involving so many particular facts, it would be difiicu t, and perhaps impossible, to produce. In the same chapter he says Perhaps this race of copper-coloured men, comprehended under the general name of American Indians, is a mixture of Asiatic tribes, and the aborigines of this vast continent as if the two races were essentially distinct from each other, and as if the copper coloured men, comprehended under the general name of Ame rican Indians, with all their mixtures, could not all of them have been only different migrations of Asiatic tribes, earlier or later arrived on the new continent.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to Torres Straits, Vol. 1: General Ethnography In 1888 I went to Torres Straits to study marine zoology and had no intention of paying attention to ethnography; indeed, before I left England, I consulted Sir William Flower about taking measurements of natives and he dissuaded me from doing so, and others seemed to think that there was little worth doing as regards the natives. All this fitted in very well with my inclinations, for I had not paid any serious attention to ethnology and was relieved to find that I might neglect it. After a preliminary cruise in the Straits, I stayed at Mabuiag during the month of October in 1888 and spent five months at Mer in 1888 - 9. I also paid short visits to various islands. Throughout this time I was in close contact with the islanders, especially when dredging and collecting plankton. I found them a cheerful, friendly and intelligent folk, and soon became friends with many of them. Naturally, when opportunity offered, I spoke to them about their past and soon found that the young men knew extremely little about it and they always referred me to the Old men. I had previously found that practically none of the Europeans in the islands knew or cared anything about the customs of the natives or their former beliefs, and I also discovered that all that was known about them was contained in the accounts given by Jukes, by Macgillivray, and in the sketches and Often inaccurate notes by Wyatt Gill and a few others. I therefore considered it my duty to record as much as was possible in the circumstances, so I induced the Old men to come in the evenings and talk about old times and tell me their folk-tales. In this way, without any previous experience or knowledge, I worked single - handed among the Western islanders and amassed a fair amount of information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa The facts recorded have been derived from a variety of sources, including the accounts of the best-known travellers, and papers published in scientific and other periodicals, both - English and foreign. Of works relating to Africa as a whole and general books of reference the following, in par ticular, have been consulted: Mr. A. H. Keane's Africa, in the new issue of Stanford's Compendium; Dr. W. Sievers's Afrika, published by the Leipzig Bibliographical Institute; Mr. Keltie's Partition of Africa, and Statesman's Year-book for 1896; Mr. A. Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography, and Longman's Gazetteer; and Mr. Keane's Ethnology in the Cambridge Geographical Series; while for the chapter on the Sahara M. Schirmer's work on that region has been of great assistance, and for South Africa, Professor Wallace's Farming Industries of Cape Colony. Professor Supan's sketch of A Century of Exploration, published in Petermann's Mitteilungen for 1888, also deserves special mention. Book The Imperial Gazetteer Vol 1

Download or read book The Imperial Gazetteer Vol 1 written by Walker Graham Blackie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Gazetteer, Vol. 1: A General of Geography, Physical, Political, Statistical, and Descriptive Next to a good Dictionary, the most generally useful book is a good gazetteer. At no time, probably, was such a work more urgently wanted than now, when the relations of this country with foreign parts have been so greatly extended, when the progress of British power and enter prise lias opened up so many new fields for scientific inquiry and commercial speculation, and when so many large and interesting additions have been made to our geographical knowledge but which, being mostly confined to special, and often expensive works, and to the transactions of learned societies, have not hitherto been accessible to the public generally. Such were some of the reasons adduced in the Prospectus for commencing to publish the imperial gazetteer, the first part of which was issued in July, 1850. Whatever value these reasons may have possessed at that period, it has gone on increasing at a rapid ratio, until now, at the close of the Work, the hostilities in which we are engaged with one of the mightiest empires of the earth, impart an additional and intense stimulus to the acquirement of geographical knowledge. In concluding this undertaking, which has occupied the Editor' S attention, more or less closely, for the last eight years, little more remains than to indicate the plan upon which the gazetteer has been written, and to note some particulars respecting its production. A leading aim throughout has been to maintain a proper medium between those works which give lengthy and elaborate articles, and consequently treat of a comparatively small number of places, and those which, by giving very short meagre articles, Often little better than registers of positions, are enabled to include an immense number of places. While in the number of articles the imperial gazetteer greatly exceeds works of the former, it does not fall much short of works of the latter class; for, by a rigid exclusion of irrelevant matter, by carefully avoiding the repetition of information in articles relating to the same subject-s, though necessarily arranged under different heads, and by adopting a concise style of writing, space has been found, generally speaking, to notice all known towns, having not less than 1000 inhabitants, and many even of a smaller popu lation, besides including the needful articles on countries, seas, lakes, rivers, mountain-ranges, &c.
