Book The Nutritional Status of Preschool Children in a Memphis Innercity Area

Download or read book The Nutritional Status of Preschool Children in a Memphis Innercity Area written by Paul Zee and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A survey of the nutritional status of children under 6 in south Memphis was done to update the information obtained in 1969 and 1972, and to determine the effects of the food supplementation program begun in 1969 to counteract the growth stunting, anemia, and vitamin deficiencies found in the area. A physician and assistant made home visits to a sample of 212 children participating in the 1974 survey and to 91 other preschool children. Results based on anthropometric measurements and blood samples were compared to those of 1974. It was found that the incidence of anemia continued to be low and vitamin B2 deficiency dropped slightly. However, nutritional status for vitamins A and C, and heights and weights, tended to be lower. The failure of the federal food assistance programs to improve nutrition among children of poor families was attributed to inflation and high unemployment among blacks in south Memphis.

Food at Work sets out key points for designing a meal program, presenting a multitude of "food solutions" including canteens, meal or food vouchers, mess rooms and kitchenettes, and partnerships with local vendors.
