Book Toward an Integrative Explanation of Corporate Financial Performance

Download or read book Toward an Integrative Explanation of Corporate Financial Performance written by N. Capon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a milestone on our journey toward developing a more comprehensive understanding of the underpinnings of corporate financial performance. Weare concerned with both the factors that cause the financial performance of some firms to be better than others at a point in time and those factors that influence the trajectory of firm financial performance over time. In addressing these issues, we consider theoretical and empirical work on financial performance, drawn from several literatures, as well as present the results from our own empirical study. The review of the theoretical and empirical work is contemporary; the major portion of data comprising the empirical study was collected in the early 1980s as part of the Columbia Business School project on corporate strategic planning, but some data sequences extend into the mid-1980s and early 1990s. Our goals are to improve understanding of firm financial performance by developing a more integrated framework and to develop a research agenda based on what we have learned. This volume consists of four chapters, 12 appendices that provide detailed technical support and development for various portions of the discussion and an extensive set of references. It interweaves results from published literature in various fields with our original empirical work and develops an integrative approach to the study of firm fmancial performance.

Book Data Envelopment Analysis Theory Methodology and Applications

Download or read book Data Envelopment Analysis Theory Methodology and Applications written by Abraham Charnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-07-31 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a milestone in the progression of Data Envelop ment Analysis (DEA). It is the first reference text which includes a comprehensive review and comparative discussion of the basic DEA models. The development is anchored in a unified mathematical and graphical treatment and includes the most important modeling ex tensions. In addition, this is the first book that addresses the actual process of conducting DEA analyses including combining DEA and 1 parametric techniques. The book has three other distinctive features. It traces the applications driven evolution and diffusion of DEA models and extensions across disciplinary boundaries. It includes a comprehensive bibliography to serve as a source of references as well as a platform for further develop ments. And, finally, the power of DEA analysis is demonstrated through fifteen novel applications which should serve as an inspiration for future applications and extensions of the methodology. The origin of this book was a Conference on New Uses of DEA in 2 Management and Public Policy which was held at the IC Institute of the University of Texas at Austin on September 27-29, 1989. The conference was made possible through NSF Grant #SES-8722504 (A. Charnes and 2 W. W. Cooper, co-PIs) and the support of the IC Institute.

Book Toward a Structural Theory of Action

Download or read book Toward a Structural Theory of Action written by Peter H. Rossi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Structural Theory of Action: Network Models of Social Structure, Perception, and Action centers on the concept of social structure, perceptions, and actions, as well as the strategies through which these concepts guide empirical research. This book also proposes a model of status/role-sets as patterns of relationships defining positions in the social topology. This text consists of nine chapters separated into three parts. Chapter 1 introduces the goals and organization of the book. Chapters 2-4 provide analytical synopsis of available network models of social differentiation, and then use these models in describing actual stratification. Chapter 5 presents a model in which actor interests are captured. Subsequent chapter assesses the empirical adequacy of the two predictions described in this book. Then, other chapters provide a network model of constraint and its empirical adequacy. This book will be valuable to anthropologists, economists, political scientists, and psychologists.

Book Networks and Location

Download or read book Networks and Location written by A. Goerzen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on data from Japan, the book examines the combined effect of product, geographic, and network diversity on multinational enterprise performance. A new measure for geographic scope is developed, one that considers the related elements of international asset dispersion and country environment diversity. The book also introduces a new concept of network diversity, and examines how it is strategically linked to performance. Perhaps most importantly, the book is able to empirically and theoretically demonstrate that a larger, more diverse network of alliances is not necessarily a good idea. These are important findings, with far reaching implications for practice and theory.

Book Synergy in Mergers Acquisitions

Download or read book Synergy in Mergers Acquisitions written by Stefan Karenfort and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of synergy, which is often illustrated as the "2+2=5-effect", is a dominant motive as well as a key success factor for Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A). Inadequate expectations with respect to the synergistic potential can however easily result in an overrated acquisition price. If the planned synergies later fail to materialize, it will be increasingly hard for the acquiring firm to achieve positive value gains for its shareholders. It is therefore vital to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic potential of a planned M&A project. This issue was addressed with a doctoral thesis investigating the underlying drivers of synergy realization, in particular the concept of business relatedness which describes the similarity of firm attributes, such as product-market presence, resource configuration and supply channel types. Using a quantitative hypothesis-testing survey design, more than 300 M&A consultants worldwide have been invited to evaluate past M&A transactions with respect to their synergistic effects. In contrast to earlier studies, the relatedness of the merging firms is established as a multi-dimensional concept considering various attributes of business relatedness simultaneously. The degree of relatedness is measured using managerial perceptions which is a comparatively new measurement approach transferred from diversification research to the field of M&A. The individual dimensions of relatedness show a different effectiveness concerning synergy realization providing further support to recent contributions which advocate a multi-dimensional conceptualization of business relatedness. The study identifies dimensions of business relatedness and their underlying drivers which are particularly relevant to predictions concerning the synergistic potential. The research project thus makes a valuable contribution to clarify the impact of relatedness on M&A performance and provides important implications for practitioners regarding the eval

Book Transaction Cost Economics and Beyond

Download or read book Transaction Cost Economics and Beyond written by Michael Dietrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years transaction cost economics have come to dominate the discussion of the nature and organization of firms. In Transaction Costs Economics and Beyond Michael Dietrich offers a critical exploration of transaction costs. He argues that whilst they have much to offer, they are still an inadequate basis for a general theory of the firm. Drawing on theories of organizational behaviour as well as economics, he concludes by offering a theory of the firm that allows for both hierarchical and creative decision making.
