Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1969, builds on the authors’ first selection and contains a selection of Chinese lyrics (tz’u) mainly from Sung Dynasty poets who made this verse-form lastingly popular. Two of these poets, Su Shih and Hsin Ch’i Chi, add a fresh and robust note to the traditional theme of nostalgia and separation. As in the previous volume, the Chinese original, written with a scholar’s brush, faces the English translation.

Book The Poetics of Repetition in English and Chinese Lyric Poetry

Download or read book The Poetics of Repetition in English and Chinese Lyric Poetry written by Cecile Chu-chin Sun and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, Chinese-Western comparative literature has been recognized as a formal academic discipline, but critics and scholars in the field have done little to develop a viable, common basis for comparison between these disparate literatures. In this pioneering book, Cecile Chu-chin Sun establishes repetition as the ideal perspective from which to compare the poetry and poetics from these two traditions. Sun contends that repetition is at the heart of all that defines the lyric as a unique art form and, by closely examining its use in Chinese and Western poetry, she demonstrates howone can identify important points of convergence and divergence. Through a representative sampling of poems from both traditions, she illustrates how the irreducible generic nature of the lyric transcends linguistic and cultural barriers but also reveals the fundamental distinctions between the traditions. Most crucially, she dissects the two radically different conceptualizations of reality—mimesis and xing—that serve as underlying principles for the poetic practices of each tradition. Skillfully integrating theory and practice, The Poetics of Repetition in English and Chinese Lyric Poetryprovides a much-needed model for future study of Chinese and English poetry as well as lucid, succinct interpretations of individual poems.

Book One Hundred More Poems from the Chinese Love and the Turning Year

Download or read book One Hundred More Poems from the Chinese Love and the Turning Year written by and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1970-01-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assemblage of delicate Chinese verse which delicately explore the worlds of love, nature, and meditation. Love and the Turning Year includes a selection from the Yueh Fu—folk songs from the Six Dynasties Period (fourth-fifth centuries A.D.). Most of the songs are simple, erotic lyrics. Some are attributed to legendary courtesans, while others may have been sung at harvest festivals or marriage celebrations. In addition to the folk songs, Rexroth offers a wide sampling of Chinese verse: works by 60 different poets, from the third century to our own time. Rexroth always translated Chinese poetry—as he said—“solely to please myself.” And he created, with remarkable success, English versions which stand as poems in their own right.

Book Chinese Literature

Download or read book Chinese Literature written by William McNaughton and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost three thousand years of Chinese literature have been gathered together in Chinese Literature: An Anthology from the Earliest Times to the Present Day. The earliest preserved folk songs of the peasantry; the major works of the "Golden Age" of Chinese philosophy; the "prose-songs" and the later skillful poems of the T'ang dynasty ; the short stories and plays; the novels; and the poems and stories of men who have made modern China - all these are represented in this anthology, in complete works or in excerpts. Editor William McNaughton presents Chinese literature as an organic development, so that the student as well as the general reader can see how genre evolved into genre and form developed into form. He has based this presentationon work by Chinese critics and scholars that, until recently, has not been available outside China. In addition to classical writings, the poems and stories by twentieth-century writers, most of which have been newly translated into English, give new insights into modern Chinese society and individuals, and make this the most complete one-volume anthology ever published.
