Book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Through My Bible Study

Download or read book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Through My Bible Study written by Bruce T. Morris and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you felt failure in forgiving? Do you know how your justices and legislators should be acting upon critical decisions affecting the family? Does your marriage need a boost? Or, even your divorce? Would you like to know more about how to please God and support your friends in marital status? Have other authors avoided the controversial issues from the Bible? Perhaps you need a little help identifying and using your spiritual gift. Do a few passages of Scripture completely baffle you? Mr. Morris' walk through his Bible studies will surely help you in one or more of your challenges. Why not take your "walk" with him? Mr. Morris was saved as a 7-year-old. He felt the call to preach as an 11-year-old. He became a pretty serious Bible student right after salvation, and felt that desire grow for years. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, TX, with a major in Bible. He then spent most of his elective credits in pursuit of the New Testament as he earned a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX. He served 27 months in the US Army. He retired from the pastorate after 1-1/3 years as assistant to the pastor and almost 29 years as senior pastor of four other churches. Whether in school, in pastoral ministry, in secular work, or in retirement, Bible reading and Bible study remain an important part of his life. He lives in retirement in Abilene, Texas, with his wife of 52 years, Betty Martin Morris. They have three children, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Among other pursuits, he is at work on his second book, a Commentary on Romans and his next book on additional Biblical issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rollicking memoir from the cardiologist turned legendary scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize that revels in the joy of science and discovery. Like Richard Feynman in the field of physics, Dr. Robert Lefkowitz is also known for being a larger-than-life character: a not-immodest, often self-deprecating, always entertaining raconteur. Indeed, when he received the Nobel Prize, the press corps in Sweden covered him intensively, describing him as “the happiest Laureate.” In addition to his time as a physician, from being a "yellow beret" in the public health corps with Dr. Anthony Fauci to his time as a cardiologist, and his extraordinary transition to biochemistry, which would lead to his Nobel Prize win, Dr. Lefkowitz has ignited passion and curiosity as a fabled mentor and teacher. But it's all in a days work, as Lefkowitz reveals in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm, which is filled to the brim with anecdotes and energy, and gives us a glimpse into the life of one of today's leading scientists.

Book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future

Download or read book A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future written by Michael J. Fox and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael J. Fox abandoned high school to pursue an acting career, but went on to receive honorary degrees from several universities and garner the highest accolades for his acting, as well as for his writing. In his new book, he inspires and motivates graduates to recognize opportunities, maximize their abilities, and roll with the punches--all with his trademark optimism, warmth, and humor. In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future, Michael draws on his own life experiences to make a case that real learning happens when "life goes skidding sideways." He writes of coming to Los Angeles from Canada at age eighteen and attempting to make his way as an actor. Fox offers up a comically skewed take on how, in his own way, he fulfilled the requirements of a college syllabus. He learned Economics as a starving artist; an unexpected turn as a neophyte activist schooled him in Political Science; and his approach to Comparative Literature involved stacking books up against their movie versions. Replete with personal stories and hilarious anecdotes, Michael J. Fox's new book is the perfect gift for graduates.

Book Playfulness and Dementia

Download or read book Playfulness and Dementia written by John Killick and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playfulness has an important role in ensuring that life continues to be enjoyable and meaningful after a person is diagnosed with dementia. This positive and uplifting book sets out to establish playfulness as an essential component of dementia care, and will be a key text in changing attitudes and offering practical suggestions for new and valuable ways of interacting and being with people with the condition. The author explains what is meant by playfulness within this context, and why it is so important for people with dementia, including as a way of maintaining meaningful relationships and a sense of personhood, as a way of retaining control and as a way into lateral thinking. He provides a wealth of practical suggestions for bringing activities with an element of playfulness into day-to-day dementia care, illustrating these with photographs and many examples drawn from his own extensive experience and from people with dementia, their families and professional caregivers. The importance of spontaneity and of being with the person with dementia in the present moment is emphasized, and the author encourages the reader to develop a more playful mindset, giving them the confidence to engage with different kinds of emotions and follow where playfulness leads, even if a sense of uncertainty is generated. The ethical dimensions of playfulness in dementia care are also covered, including important boundaries to be observed and guidance on dealing with difficult situations. Offering a fresh and original perspective that will illuminate our interactions with people with dementia, this is essential reading for professional care staff, activity coordinators, therapists, nurses, people with dementia and their families and caregivers, and anyone else concerned with the wellbeing of those with the condition.

Book A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to the Dementia Ward

This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Remarkable insights of skilled nursing care from an insider! Married father of four retires, studies then becomes a CNA. During his seven years of service you'll read about the "Secret Club," drama, compassion, and even deer hunting. A must-read for every family struggling with the idea of moving a loved one into a nursing home. Inspiring reading for nursing home managers. Includes tips for visitors." Brenda Avadian, MATheCaregiversVoice.com Pearblossom, CA "Charles has written a book that is about ordinary people. This book is also about dementia and caring for those with dementia. With the baby boomer generation flooding the elderly age group, our society needs to accept that many of us will have Alzheimer's disease and the rest of us will likely be affected by it at some level. Charles has very personal and professional experiences in this area and fortunately for readers, he has the remarkable ability to write about them in a beautifully enthralling way. Charles writes about his friends, both those he works with and those he cares for, detailing the raw needs of basic care, compassion, understanding, and human touch that those with dementia often live with.. It is clear that he also truly sees the intelligence, wit, and personality of the people he has come to know so well. Charles' experiences at NCHCF tell a story that often sounds like fiction, but for those who already know Alzheimer's Disease it is a story that both hurts your heart and fills it with love. For those who do not know the path that dementia and Alzheimer's disease can take you down, it is a funny, colorful, totally enthralling, and often difficult read that will make readers want to learn more. This book is written with deep insight, intelligence, grace, and above all, kindness. Readers are likely to finish this book feeling as if they too know Charles' cherished characters." Jane Dolan, RN, ANP-BCAspirus Memory ClinicWausau, WI "This is a story about a man who thought he was helping others, but in the end, received greater rewards - from the kindness he was showing others. Chuck Schoenfeld does a skillful job writing about the very serious subject of Alzheimer's in a manner that is enlightening and sometimes humorous. This book is a must read for anyone who has to deal with this debilitating disease." Gary Edinger, AuthorWill to Live: A Saga of Survival Kennan, WI "Although the day was never routine, the life of a CNA has a certain pattern, helping with eating and with activities. However, this pattern was full of the dynamics of dealing with people with different levels of dementia. The major part of the book tells the stories of the individual residents in the dementia wards of North Central Health Care Facilities. With great respect for the patients at North Central Health Care, the author brings deep respect for the patients, dedication to helping those in need, and a faith that keeps him going through everything that gets thrown at you in a nursing home, including the death of those he helped and cared for. This is a story that is not told elsewhere and should be read to get a small glimpse of the dedication of all health care workers and of the lives of those whom they cared for."Gary Gisselman North Central Health Care, Board of DirectorsWausau, WI "The author offers a compassionate and unique perspective as a professional caregiver. He reminds us all that any person living with Alzheimer's is still a person with a rich history of interests, relationships and experiences. Alzheimer's disease may affect a person cognitively and physically, but it doesn't diminish the person or the emotional connectedness they have with their loved ones."Kim Kinner, Executive DirectorAlzheimer's Association - Greater Wisconsin Chapter, Green Bay, WI See what others are saying! Book People with Dementia Speak Out

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In People with Dementia Speak Out, twenty-three people from diverse backgrounds share their experiences of living with dementia. The contributors are honest about the frustrations and fears they face, but overall there is remarkably little self-pity and a great deal of optimism. The personal accounts demonstrate that with the right support at the right time, and above all with opportunities to continue to contribute to society in a meaningful way, it is possible to live well with dementia. These fascinating stories bring to life the characters behind the collective term 'people with dementia', and show that each person with dementia is a unique individual with their own personality, history, beliefs, cultural affinities and sense of humour, and their own way of adapting to the disabilities and opportunities which this condition confers. This unique collection of personal testimonies will be reassuring and encouraging for those coming to terms with a diagnosis of dementia, for their families and carers, and is essential reading for health and social care professionals at all levels.

Book The Problem of Alzheimer s

Download or read book The Problem of Alzheimer s written by Jason Karlawish and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive and compelling book on one of today's most prevalent illnesses. In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans had Alzheimer’s, and more than half a million died because of the disease and its devastating complications. 16 million caregivers are responsible for paying as much as half of the $226 billion annual costs of their care. As more people live beyond their seventies and eighties, the number of patients will rise to an estimated 13.8 million by 2050. Part case studies, part meditation on the past, present and future of the disease, The Problem of Alzheimer's traces Alzheimer’s from its beginnings to its recognition as a crisis. While it is an unambiguous account of decades of missed opportunities and our health care systems’ failures to take action, it tells the story of the biomedical breakthroughs that may allow Alzheimer’s to finally be prevented and treated by medicine and also presents an argument for how we can live with dementia: the ways patients can reclaim their autonomy and redefine their sense of self, how families can support their loved ones, and the innovative reforms we can make as a society that would give caregivers and patients better quality of life. Rich in science, history, and characters, The Problem of Alzheimer's takes us inside laboratories, patients' homes, caregivers’ support groups, progressive care communities, and Jason Karlawish's own practice at the Penn Memory Center.

Book Follow Your Bliss

Download or read book Follow Your Bliss written by Donald Hodder and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Donald Hodder has woven tales of joy and sorrow, humour and fulfillment into this compelling memoir. He practised family medicine for over forty-five years, all of it in his native Newfoundland. During his career, he kept many notebooks detailing his experiences. These became the foundation for this book. In studied prose and lilting verse, with integrity and compassion, he interlaces autobiographical material with social commentary on people and happenings in his life. He witnessed a broad spectrum of human conditions: the mundane, the miraculous, the physical, the psychological, and the social. He feels immensely honoured to have shared in the most intimate aspects of daily life with thousands of patients for so long. He is, at times, absolutely serious, skillfully witty, and hilariously funny. You are invited to sit at his table of memories and be entertained, enlightened, and enriched. Enjoy!
