Book A Numerical Study of Pulse combustor Jet Impingement Heat Transfer

Download or read book A Numerical Study of Pulse combustor Jet Impingement Heat Transfer written by Wichit Liewkongsataporn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pulsating jet generated by a pulse combustor has been experimentally demonstrated as a technique for impingement heat transfer enhancement relative to a steady jet. The enhancement factor was as high as 2.5. Despite such potential, further studies of this technique have been limited, let alone industrial applications. The ultimate goal of the Pulsed Air Drying project at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology is to develop this technique to commercialization for industrial applications such as paper drying. The main objective of the research in this dissertation is to provide a fundamental basis for the development of the technology. Using CFD simulations, the research studied the characteristics of pulsating single-slot-nozzle jet impingement flows and heat transfer on stationary and moving surfaces. In addition, in order to understand basic flow characteristics of pulse-combustor jets, a simplified model of Helmholtz pulse combustors was developed. The model was used to recommend a strategy to generate a pulsating jet having large amplitude of velocity oscillation. And based on this model, pulsating jets in the simulations were characterized as those at the tailpipe exit of a pulse combustor. The impingement conditions were similar to those in conventional impingement hoods for paper drying. Parameter studies included the effects of jet velocity oscillation amplitude, pulsation frequency, mean jet velocity, tailpipe width, and impingement surface velocity. Simulation results showed that the amplitude of jet velocity oscillation was the most important parameter for heat transfer enhancement, in which two mechanisms were identified: high impinging jet velocity during the positive cycle and strong re-circulating flows in the impingement zone during the negative cycle of jet velocity oscillation. As for the improvement by the pulsating jets relative to steady jets, the maximum heat transfer enhancement and energy saving factors were 1.8 and 3.0, respectively, which were very encouraging for further development of the technology.

Book Normal Impingement of a Supersonic Jet on a Plane

Download or read book Normal Impingement of a Supersonic Jet on a Plane written by Kuei-Yuan Chien and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of a balanced, planar or axisymmetric, supersonic jet impinging normally on a flat surface has been considered based on an inviscid theory. The object of the study was to provide a rational model for calculating shock-interference heating as produced by a type IV shock-interaction pattern. The unwanted singularity at a low supersonic Mach number peculiar to scheme I of the one-strip formulation of the method of integral relations, as observed by South and by Gummer and Hunt, was successfully removed by the application of the scheme III of the one-strip formulation of the method of integral relations. The resulting simultaneous nonlinear algebraic equations were easily solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method. Sensitivity of the solution on various approximating functions employed was extensively investigated. Unlike the findings reported by Gummer and Hunt, solutions that satisfy all well-posed boundary conditions can be obtained by the one-strip formulation. Results indicate that, for the planar case, a rational engineering solution for the stagnation-point velocity gradient (and hence the peak heat-transfer rate) has been obtained. For the axisymmetric case, however, solutions appear to be not quite converging. A two-strip formulation based on the method of integral relations is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the requirement for enhanced cooling technologies on modern gas turbine engines, advanced research and development has had to take place in field of thermal engineering. Among the gas turbine cooling technologies, impingement jet cooling is one of the most effective in terms of cooling effectiveness, manufacturability and cost. The chapters contained in this book describe research on state-of-the-art and advanced cooling technologies that have been developed, or that are being researched, with a variety of approaches from theoretical, experimental, and CFD studies. The authors of the chapters have been selected from some of the most active researchers and scientists on the subject. This is the first to book published on the topics of gas turbines and heat transfer to focus on impingement cooling alone.

Book Research Methodologies in Supply Chain Management

Download or read book Research Methodologies in Supply Chain Management written by Herbert Kotzab and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For reseach in all subjects and among different philisopical paradigms, research methodologies form one of the key issues to rely on. This volume brings a series of papers together, which present different research methodologies as applied in supply chain management. This comprises review oriented papers that look at what kind of methodologies have been applied, as well as methodological papers discussing new developments needed to successfully conduct research in supply chain management. The third group is made up of applications of the respective methodologies, which serve as examples on how the different methodological approaches can be applied. All papers have undergone a review process to ensure their quality. Therefore, we hope that this book will serve as a valid source for current and future researchers in the field. While the workshop on “Research Methodologies in Supply Chain Management” took place at the Supply Chain Management Center, Carl von Ossietzky Univ- sity in Oldenburg, Germany, it is based on a collaboration with the Supply Chain Management Group of the Department of Operations Management at the Cop- hagen Business School and the Department of Production Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. We would like to thank all those who contributed to the workshop and this book.

Book Three Dimensional Attached Viscous Flow

Download or read book Three Dimensional Attached Viscous Flow written by Ernst Heinrich Hirschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscous flow is treated usually in the frame of boundary-layer theory and as two-dimensional flow. Books on boundary layers give at most the describing equations for three-dimensional boundary layers, and solutions often only for some special cases. This book provides basic principles and theoretical foundations regarding three-dimensional attached viscous flow. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers. This wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems to be mastered in practice. The topics are weak, strong, and global interaction, the locality principle, properties of three-dimensional viscous flow, thermal surface effects, characteristic properties, wall compatibility conditions, connections between inviscid and viscous flow, flow topology, quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows, laminar-turbulent transition and turbulence. Though the primary flight speed range is that of civil air transport vehicles, flows past other flying vehicles up to hypersonic speeds are also considered. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers, as this wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems that have to be overcome in practice. The specific topics covered include weak, strong, and global interaction; the locality principle; properties of three-dimensional viscous flows; thermal surface effects; characteristic properties; wall compatibility conditions; connections between inviscid and viscous flows; flow topology; quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows; laminar-turbulent transition; and turbulence. Detailed discussions of examples illustrate these topics and the relevant phenomena encountered in three-dimensional viscous flows. The full governing equations, reference-temperature relations for qualitative considerations and estimations of flow properties, and coordinates for fuselages and wings are also provided. Sample problems with solutions allow readers to test their understanding.
