Book A Fully Coupled Finite Element Model of Coal Deformation and Two Phase Flow for Coalbed Methane Extraction

Download or read book A Fully Coupled Finite Element Model of Coal Deformation and Two Phase Flow for Coalbed Methane Extraction written by Dong Chen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reservoir simulation model is usually required to represent the combined effects of gas transport, water flow, and coal swelling/shrinking on the extraction of coalbed methane (CBM). Although a number of models have been developed in recent years, most of them are based on coal permeability models under the assumptions of uniaxial strain and constant overburden load. Under these assumptions, coal permeability is defined as a function of pore pressure only. This allows the gas transport and water flow to be decoupled from coal deformation. In this study, these two assumptions are relaxed: a general porosity and effective permeability model is developed to represent the behavior of both the primary medium (coal matrix) and the secondary medium (fractures) under conditions of variable stress. The effective permeability model is defined as a function of effective stress, and can be applied to the full spectrum of mechanical conditions spanning prescribed in-situ stresses through constrained displacement. Moreover the effect of matrix moisture is often ignored in previous simulation studies, but some experimental results showed that the presence of moisture in the coal matrix had profound influences on the gas storage and transport in coal seams by reducing the gas adsorption capacity of the coal, decreasing the gas effective diffusivity through the coal matrix, and varying the coal swelling strain. In order to investigate the magnitude and interplay the moisture effects on CBM production, approximate relationships have been built to quantify the moisture effect on the gas adsorption capacity, the gas effective diffusivity and the coal swelling strain. These relationships have been calibrated by comparison with a selection of literature data. Both the permeability model and the moisture effect correlations are implemented into a fully coupled model of coal deformation, gas transport in the matrix system, and gas-water flow in the fracture system. The FE model has been verified through the history matching of the gas and water production profiles in the Powder River Basin. The verified FE model is applied to conduct a series of parametric studies. These parametric studies illustrate important non-linear responses due to the effective stress that cannot be recovered where mechanical influences are not rigorously coupled with the two-phase flow system.

This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm in the design of all human activity that requires energy for its development must change from the past. We must change the processes of product manufacturing and functional services. This is necessary in order to mitigate the ecological footprint of man on the Earth, which cannot be considered as a resource with infinite capacities. To do this, every single process must be analyzed and modified, with the aim of decarbonising each production sector. This collection of articles has been assembled to provide ideas and new broad-spectrum contributions for these purposes.

Book excerpt: Salient features of technical progress for the first quarter are the following: (I) computer-assisted literature searches have been completed for several strategies designed to cover different aspects of the model development and evaluation program. Some strategy refinement and additional searches are required. Ultimately a comprehensive bibliography will have been compiled and evaluated; (II) basic mathematical components that are sufficient for the development of a first numerical model for water and methane flows to coal mines have been identified. This initial set of components is a basis for the collection and analysis of refinements to provide more realistic accounts of the complex factors affecting coal-bed methane during mining and degasification; (III) a set of basic partial differential equations for flow of water and gas in a horizontal, homogeneous coal seam has been formulated in terms of pressure, pore saturation, and adsorbed gas variables and presented in normalized form for numerical solution. Equation sets corresponding to alternative choices of dependent variables will be formulated and compared with this initial set and (IV) computer subroutines have been modified and assembled to implement one-dimensional, nonsteady, two-phase flow models. These programs implement numerical, finite-difference, method-of-lines algorithms in a format that facilitates substitution of mathematical components and equation sets. Initial runs with this software package have illustrated the superiority of a particular space-discretization scheme and provide data for comparison of grid and permeability weighting schemes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gas industry's future remains bright. Three major shifts will shape the evolution of global natural gas markets in the next five years - growing imports from China, greater industrial demand, and rising production from the United States. The structural shift will determine the evolution of the market at a time when growth in emerging markets is sustained by strong economic expansion and strong policy support to curb air pollution. Industry becomes a major player in gas markets, while the United States cements its position as a top producer and exporter thanks to its shale revolution. Gas 2018, the latest IEA annual market report, assesses these trends and provides a detailed analysis of supply and trade developments, infrastructure investments, and demand-growth forecast through 2023. The report analyses the main changes that will likely transform the natural gas market, including market reforms that shape supply and demand patterns in key Asian economies and developments in the LNG market - the main driver of interregional natural gas trade growth.

Book Fluid Transport Behaviors of Intact Coal and Coal Measure Rocks

Download or read book Fluid Transport Behaviors of Intact Coal and Coal Measure Rocks written by Long Fan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal gas extraction consists of coalbed methane (CBM) recovery from surface drilling boreholes and coal mine methane (CMM) extraction via both surface and subsurface ventholes in conjunction with mining operations. The permeability of a certain fluid in coal reservoirs and its stress response corresponding to dynamic pressure are critical for both effective gas drainage from coal and CBM extractions. For both CMM and CBM applications, the dimensions of fluid flow pathways can range from tens of centimeters to several micrometers, even nanometers. The transport behaviors of fluids in multiscale flow pathways are expected to be dramatically different. Permeability evolution and fluid transportation behaviors in multiscale flow pathways are dominant factors in achieving the successful gas extraction in coal reservoirs. This dissertation focuses on the transport behaviors in multiscale pathways and their applications in CBM and CMM production. For CMM application, a conceptual model of broken rock mass compaction was proposed in this study, based on elastic theory, by simplifying the compression process and assuming the connection between broken rocks is a similar cubic mass without a large void space. Compacted rock mass permeability evolution was modeled based on the cubic law of porosity and permeability. The predicted permeability evolution by a coupled model is similar with reported experimental results. Compared to intact rock mass, we found that the stress-strain curve of compacted rock mass takes a longer stress-strain path to reach the linearity due to void space compaction resulting from friction slipping and re-arrangement of the grains. In addition, the permeability variation under the overburden cyclic loading-unloading process was experimentally investigated in the lab. An average permeability damage concept with a complete loading-unloading cycle was introduced to quantify the effects of maximum stress, loading path, holding time period, and gas type on permeability evolution. It was demonstrated that the permeability hysteresis occurred during the cyclic loading-unloading, and that the average permeability damage was subject to the loading-unloading paths. The average permeability damage for the coal specimen was more sensitive to maximum loading stress and the loading-unloading path compared to gas injection pore pressure and the holding period. For CBM production, the sorption induced swelling/shrinkage effect was numerically simulated based on a gas-solid coupling model incorporated with swelling effect to evaluate the horizontal stress relaxation under uniaxial strain conditions during depletion. Unlike the elastic strain, the sorption-induced strain showed a non-linear behavior with continuous sorbing gas injections, and these two types of strains were engaged in a competitive process of volumetric change for the coal. It was found that the simulated results of volumetric change under the hydrostatic condition well agreed with experimental data. To better understand frictional sliding behavior and permeability evolution in well-cleated coal, sliding friction measurements were conducted using artificially generated coal fractures. Various fluids (helium, carbon dioxide, water, and moisturized methane) were injected into coal to investigate the dynamic characteristics of friction coefficients and permeability evolution during faulting. Unlike the traditional view of stress-based fault reactivation, our results demonstrated that the initial sliding reactivation stress on the coal was not only pressure dependent but also fluid-type dependent.
