Book Knightsville and Silver Lake

Download or read book Knightsville and Silver Lake written by Joe Fuoco and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sister villages of Knightsville and Silver Lake are connected not only by physical proximity and the flow of the Pocasset River, but also share a fascinating and sometimes scandalous past. Over the years, both communities have been home to a great deal of religious and political fervor. The twin settlements witnessed lurid murders and occasioned visits from infamous travelers. Truly, the combined history of Knightsville and Silver Lake merits and rewards exploration. But, alas, the complete story of this area's past has been lost to time. Knightsville was once peculiarly known as "Monkeytown," and the reason for this is no longer known. The body of water that gave Silver Lake its name no longer exists--the water-filled basin used for recreational purposes at the turn of the century has been dredged and the basin filled in. Today, streets with tenements and private homes fill the area, along with a number of commercial enterprises.

Book The Rhode Island State Constitution

Download or read book The Rhode Island State Constitution written by Patrick T. Conley and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhode Island has a long history of constitutional governance. Beginning in 1636, Rhode Island's constitution has been shaped by revolution, nation-building, tumult, and further changes wrought by everything from neo-liberalism to gay rights. The result has been a living document reflecting conflicting and changing values, making the Rhode Island constitution an essential resource for understanding the cultural history of this state. In The Rhode Island State Constitution Patrick T. Conley and Robert J. Flanders provide an outstanding constitutional and historical account of the state's governing charter. In addition to an overview of Rhode Island's constitutional history, it provides an in-depth, section-by-section analysis of the entire constitution, detailing the many significant changes that have been made since its initial drafting. This treatment, along with a table of cases, index, and bibliography provides an unsurpassed reference guide for students, scholars, and practitioners of Rhode Island's constitution. Previously published by Greenwood, this title has been brought back in to circulation by Oxford University Press with new verve. Re-printed with standardization of content organization in order to facilitate research across the series, this title, as with all titles in the series, is set to join the dynamic revision cycle of The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state's constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series provides essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.

Download or read book Brotherly Love written by Charles Hoffmann and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On New Year's Eve in 1843, Rhode Island textile manufacturer Amasa Sprague was shot and beaten to death. Within two days, three Irish immigrant brothers - Nicholas, John, and William Gordon - were arrested and charged with murder. All three were eventually brought to trial. Brotherly Love is a graphic reconstruction of the crime, its social and economic background, and the subsequent trials. The story reveals the antagonism between native born Yankees, who commanded great power, and the growing number of Irish Catholic immigrants, most of whom worked in the textile mills. Indeed, the economic, political, and religious dimensions of the conflict are all evident in the trials. The authors argue persuasively that the Gordons were victims of bigotry and circumstantial evidence, serving as convenient scapegoats to appease a community outraged over the murder of its wealthiest citizen. In telling the story of this notorious case, Brotherly Love reveals the politics of prejudice in nineteenth-century New England as played out in community and courtroom.
