Book excerpt: A Full-Figured Faith is a collection of essays on traditional Jewish values and practices that Jews have sometimes found less than convincing or compelling. God wrote the Bible--really? Miracles are a fact of life--is that so? Jews must marry Jews--but, isn't that a little racist? Tapping into his almost 40 years of experience in the pulpit, Rabbi Rank delves into many such and similar issues with a light-hearted style and a logic that is easy to follow. Among the topics discussed are the existence of God, the messiah, the chosenness of the Jewish people, sexual mores, and Zionism. The thrust of the book is not to reject the skepticism of doubters, but to encourage it as a way of legitimate engagement with one's heritage. The questions that people may pose about the values and rituals that an ancient tradition promotes, far from undermining faith, may just serve to enhance it. The best of faith is not a place of narrowness, but to the contrary, an expansive space. And though one may never fully figure what faith is all about, an honest and contemporary faith allows for lots of questions and skepticism and doubts. That is what might be referred to as a full-figured faith.

Book excerpt: Every day, major headlines tell the story of how Christianity is attempting to influence American culture and politics. But statistics show that young Americans are disenchanted with a faith that has become culturally antagonistic and too closely aligned with partisan politics. In this personal yet practical work, Jonathan Merritt uncovers the changing face of American Christianity by uniquely examining the coming of age of a new generation of Christians. Jonathan Merritt illuminates the spiritual ethos of this new generation of believers who engage the world with Christ-centered faith but an un-polarized political perspective. Through personal stories and biblically rooted commentary this scion of a leading evangelical family takes a close, thoughtful look at the changing religious and political environment, addressing such divisive issues as abortion, gay marriage, environmental use and care, race, war, poverty, and the imbalance of world wealth. Through Scripture, the examples of Jesus, and personal defining faith experiences, he distills the essential truths at the core of a Christian faith that is now just coming of age.

Book A Habit Called Faith

  • ISBN : 1493428756
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book A Habit Called Faith written by Jen Pollock Michel and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's neurological research has placed habit at the center of human behavior; we are what we do repetitively. When we want to add something to our life, whether it's exercise, prayer, or just getting up earlier in the morning, we know that we must turn an activity into a habit through repetition or it just won't stick. What would happen if we applied the same kind of daily dedication to faith? Could faith become a habit, a given--automatic? With vulnerable storytelling and insightful readings of both Old and New Testament passages, Jen Pollock Michel invites the convinced and the curious into a 40-day Bible reading experience. Vividly translating ancient truths for a secular age, Michel highlights how the biblical text invites us to see, know, live, love, and obey. The daily reflection questions and weekly discussion guides invite both individuals and groups, believers and doubters alike, to explore how faith, even faith as small as a mustard seed, might grow into a life-defining habit.

Book Fashion Faith and Fantasy in the New Physics of the Universe

Download or read book Fashion Faith and Fantasy in the New Physics of the Universe written by Roger Penrose and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading physicists questions some of the most fashionable ideas in physics today, including string theory What can fashionable ideas, blind faith, or pure fantasy possibly have to do with the scientific quest to understand the universe? Surely, theoretical physicists are immune to mere trends, dogmatic beliefs, or flights of fancy? In fact, acclaimed physicist and bestselling author Roger Penrose argues that researchers working at the extreme frontiers of physics are just as susceptible to these forces as anyone else. In this provocative book, he argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. Arguing that string theory has veered away from physical reality by positing six extra hidden dimensions, Penrose cautions that the fashionable nature of a theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. In the case of quantum mechanics, its stunning success in explaining the atomic universe has led to an uncritical faith that it must also apply to reasonably massive objects, and Penrose responds by suggesting possible changes in quantum theory. Turning to cosmology, he argues that most of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Finally, Penrose describes how fashion, faith, and fantasy have ironically also shaped his own work, from twistor theory, a possible alternative to string theory that is beginning to acquire a fashionable status, to "conformal cyclic cosmology," an idea so fantastic that it could be called "conformal crazy cosmology." The result is an important critique of some of the most significant developments in physics today from one of its most eminent figures.

Book excerpt: Carl Weber brings together two popular literary divas to give readers what they’ve been asking for: stories about big, beautiful women. Age is just a number, and whoever said that full-figured women don’t know how to bring fire to a relationship was sadly mistaken. Symone Davenport is a 22-year-old college senior who has set herself up for a very secure future, but all her achievements feel more like a duty than a labor of love. Her true love is singing R&B, but she doesn’t believe her plus-size figure could ever be diva material. She settles for fading into the background in her father’s church choir. It takes the help of Jaylen Richards, the handsome new choir director to not only unlock her talent and try to bring her into the spotlight, but to unlock her heart. Janice was never thin, but the fifty pounds she packed on after her sister’s sudden death two years ago sent her way beyond the size 14 she used to be. With a gorgeous face, personality, and brains she isn’t lacking friends, but her insecurities about her weight gain get in the way of things reaching the next level with men. Flirting over the phone and via e-mail with Tony is easy, since he’s hundreds of miles away, but when business brings him to Janice’s Chicago office, she goes out of her way to avoid meeting him face to face. She assumes he’ll take one look at her and not even remember their conversations. She couldn’t be further from the truth, and soon their romance blossoms. In his arms nothing, especially size, matters; however, when lies are uncovered and things come undone, layers of Tony are exposed. Will it reveal a golden pear or a rotten apple? Did he play on her insecurities for his own selfish gain, and is he just more dead weight she will eventually have to lose?

Book Earth Honoring Faith

  • Author : Larry L. Rasmussen
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-04-28
  • ISBN : 0190245743
  • Pages : 475 pages

Download or read book Earth Honoring Faith written by Larry L. Rasmussen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Winner of the 2014 Nautilus Book Awards Thoughtful observers agree that the planetary crisis we now face-climate change; species extinction; the destruction of entire ecosystems; the urgent need for a more just economic-political order-is pushing human civilization to a radical turning point: change or perish. But precisely how to change remains an open question. In Earth-honoring Faith, Larry Rasmussen answers that question with a dramatically new way of thinking about human society, ethics, and the ongoing health of our planet. Rejecting the modern assumption that morality applies to human society alone, Rasmussen insists that we must derive a spiritual and ecological ethic that accounts for the well-being of all creation, as well as the primal elements upon which it depends: earth, air, fire, water, and sunlight. He argues that good science, necessary as it is, will not be enough to inspire fundamental change. We must draw on religious resources as well to make the difficult transition from an industrial-technological age obsessed with consumption to an ecological age that restores wise stewardship of all life. Earth-honoring Faith advocates an alliance of spirituality and ecology, in which the material requirements for planetary life are reconciled with deep traditions of spirituality across religions, traditions that include mysticism, sacramentalism, prophetic practices, asceticism, and the cultivation of wisdom. It is these shared spiritual practices that can produce a chorus of world faiths to counter the consumerism, utilitarianism, alienation, oppression, and folly that have pushed us to the brink. Written with passionate commitment and deep insight, Earth-honoring Faith reminds us that we must live in the present with the knowledge that the eyes of future generations will look back at us.

Book The Religion of Thinness

Download or read book The Religion of Thinness written by Michelle Mary Lelwica and published by Gurze Books. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With so many women approaching their diets, body image, and pursuit of a slender figure with slavish devotion, The Religion of Thinness is a timely addition to the discussion of our cultural obsession with weight loss. At the heart of this obsession is the belief that in order to be happy, one must be slim, and the attendant myths, rituals, images, and moral codes can leave some women with severe emotional damage. Idealized images in the media inspire devotees of this “religion” to experience guilt for behaviors that are biologically normal and necessary, and Lelwica offers two ways to combat this dangerous cultural message. Advising readers to look hard at the societal cues that cause them to obsess about their weight, and to remain mindful about their actions and needs, this book will not only help stop the cycle of guilt and shame associated with food, it will help readers to grow and accept their bodies as they are.

Book The Revival of Atumism The Ancient Egyptian Religion Part 1

Download or read book The Revival of Atumism The Ancient Egyptian Religion Part 1 written by Mostafa Elshamy and published by Mostafa Elshamy. This book was released on 2021-09-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Atumism derives from ‘Atum,’ the manifestation of the All-Lord in creating the sphere of earth and the creature Adam. The words ‘Atumian’ and ‘Atumianity,’ addressed here by the meaning of ‘Human’ and ‘Humanity,’ are derived from ‘Atum’ who is ‘Adam.’ In the Egyptian literature, there is a thin line that differentiates ‘Atum’ and ‘Atum.’ Why denominate the Egyptian Religion by the term “Atumism”? The answer is found in multitude of diverse notions embedded in the Egyptian speech and makes the term in its profoundness the most right for a religion that has been of divine revelation millennia ahead of A. D. This book is a fusion of the earlier research titled “Ancient Egypt: The Primal Age of Divine Revelation, Volume I and II.

Book Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild

Download or read book Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild written by Mary A. Kassian and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inundated by popular culture, many women have lost their bearings and no longer trust the internal compass that intuitively affirms those things that are good, true, and noble about womanhood. As Jesus’ favorite and most powerful teaching tactic was the parable, it is appropriate that Mary Kassian walks the reader through the compelling tale of the wild versus wise woman found in Proverbs 7. By using 20 points of contrast, she helps readers discern wild from wise, saucy from biblically savvy, and more. Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild will captivate, convict, and challenge women to become decreasingly worldly and increasingly godly, and it will equip them with truth for that journey. Includes questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter

Book The Right Kind of Strong

Download or read book The Right Kind of Strong written by Mary A. Kassian and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author Mary Kassian provides readers a biblical guide to becoming the strong, resilient, capable women God created them to be. Our culture teaches us that it's important for women to be strong. The Bible agrees. Unfortunately, culture's idea of what makes a woman strong doesn't always align with the Bible's. As a result, Christians often have a skewed view of what constitutes strength. In The Right Kind of Strong, Mary Kassian delves into Paul's exhortation in 2 Timothy about the women of the church in Ephesus and uncovers warnings and truths about seven habits that can sap women's strength. She helps readers avoid these pitfalls by carefully considering the people they allow into their lives, taking control of their minds by taking every thought captive, quickly and regularly confessing sin, intentionally engaging their emotions, living out what they’re learning, developing confident convictions, and embracing their human weakness and leaning on the Lord. She reveals how, by implementing these seven habits, Christian women can walk in freedom and grow to be strong God's way.
