Book A Fulfulde Maasina English French Lexicon

Download or read book A Fulfulde Maasina English French Lexicon written by Donald W. Osborn and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lexicon brings together lexical material from a wide range of published and non-published sources to create an extensive compilation of the vocabulary of Fulfulde as it is spoken in that part of central Mali known as Masina (in Fulfulde, Maasina). The Lexicon is intended primarily for non-Fulfulde speakers who are learning the language at the intermediate or advanced levels and who need access to a comprehensive reference source on Fulfulde vocabulary. Scholars, development workers, and others whose research or fieldwork involves use of the Fulfulde of Masina may find it helpful as well in clarifying nuances of meaning and standardized spelling for the less familiar terms they might encounter. It is also intended that the present work, beyond the matter of organizing vocabulary, will contribute significantly to the expanding lexicographical and linguistic investigations of Fulfulde.

Book A History of Race in Muslim West Africa 1600 1960

Download or read book A History of Race in Muslim West Africa 1600 1960 written by Bruce S. Hall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobilization of local ideas about racial difference has been important in generating, and intensifying, civil wars that have occurred since the end of colonial rule in all of the countries that straddle the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. From Sudan to Mauritania, the racial categories deployed in contemporary conflicts often hearken back to an older history in which blackness could be equated with slavery and non-blackness with predatory and uncivilized banditry. This book traces the development of arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in one important place along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert: the Niger Bend in northern Mali. Using Arabic documents held in Timbuktu, as well as local colonial sources in French and oral interviews, Bruce S. Hall reconstructs an African intellectual history of race that long predated colonial conquest, and which has continued to orient inter-African relations ever since.

Book excerpt: With Mande Music, Eric Charry offers the most comprehensive source available on one of Africa's richest and most sophisticated music cultures. Using resources as disparate as early Arabic travel accounts, oral histories, and archival research as well as his own extensive studies in Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and the Gambia, Charry traces this music culture from its origins in the thirteenth-century Mali empire to the recording studios of Paris and New York. He focuses on the four major spheres of Mande music—hunter's music, music of the jelis or griots, jembe and other drumming, and guitar-based modern music—exploring how each evolved, the types of instruments used, the major artists, and how each sphere relates to the others. With its maps, illustrations, and musical transcriptions as well as an exhaustive bibliography, discography, and videography, this book is essential reading for those seeking an in-depth look at one of the most exciting, innovative, and deep-rooted phenomena on the world music scene. Book Democracy and Development in Mali

Download or read book Democracy and Development in Mali written by R. James Bingen and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mali, a country rich with history and culture, but one of the poorest in the world, emerged in the 1990s as one of Africa's most vibrant democracies. Strengthened by bold political and economic reforms at home, Mali has emerged as a leader in African peace keeping efforts. How has such a transition taken place? How have these changes built on Mali's rich heritage? These are the questions that the contributors to this volume have addressed. During the past twenty-five years, the scholarly research and applied development work of Michigan State University faculty and students in Mali represents the most significant combined, long-term, and continuing contribution of any group of university faculty in the United States or Europe to the study of Malian society, economy, and politics. The applied nature of much of this work has resulted in a significant number of working papers, reports, and conference presentations. This volume represents a coherent and connected set of essays from one American university with a widely known and highly respected role in African development. While the essays identify and review Mali's unique historical and contemporary path to democracy and development, they also contribute to the advancement of theoretical knowledge about African development.

Book Essays on Modern Quebec Theater

Download or read book Essays on Modern Quebec Theater written by Joseph I. Donohoe and published by East Lansing : Michigan State University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the "quiet revolution," as the Quebec people struggled to free themselves from the alienating effects of two centuries of repression, and as political and educational reforms began to open an exhilarating window on the future, there occurred an unprecedented outpouring of artistic expression in literature, music and popular song. While in print literature, the energy liberated by the "quiet revolution," contributed to the development of talents like Hubert Aquin, Marie-Claire Blais and Roch Carrier, it was nonetheless the theater--traditionally a minor silhouette on the Quebec cultural horizon--that underwent the most striking transformation. The essays included in this work continue the tradition of critical analysis of Quebec theater by bringing together ideas from Quebec, English Canada, the United States, and France. These essays reflect a wide variety of interpretative techniques and theoretical underpinnings. Also, these essays attest to the rich imagination and innovative techniques of Quebec's playwrights and directors.
