The dry hills of California are a metaphor for her empty soul, but she can't afford to wallow in self-pity with an autistic son who can't make eye contact and a precocious twelve-year-old daughter counting on her to get it together. With no other available jobs, Ally steps through the only open door for employment, working as head cook at a dilapidated Christian camp. Problem is, she doesn't cook and doesn't like religious fanatics. But despite everything, she finds herself strangely hopeful as she learns her journey ends where the lake begins.

Book excerpt: The Swing Movement -- all jazz hands and high-waisted pants -- advanced and receded in good order. I wrote this book to tell the other side of the story. I want you to know about the oddball collection of iconoclasts who got together and made the Squirrel Nut Zippers what they were: a combustible, improbable gumbo of joy and menace. Along the way, I write about our many influences: jazz and blues and hot music and calypso and, yes, swing. Come run these fields, like rabbits, while the harvest moon hangs caught in the branches. Come linger over this snapshot.

Download or read book Zip It written by Karen Ehman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This follow-up devotional to the New York Times bestseller Keep It Shut takes a deeper look at the advice and commands of Scripture concerning the tongue, offering practical how-to's that will inspire you to use your words to build, bless, encourage, and praise. Each day we speak thousands of words in dozens of places. One thing is certain about the words we speak, type, and text: they are powerful, and they have consequences. They can impart love and life or deliver discouragement and defeat. No wonder Scripture contains more than 3,500 verses about the power of the tongue. This devotional will take you on a journey over the next forty days to learn to choose and use your words wisely--saving you a boatload of regret and wounded relationships. Each of the forty interactive entries includes a Scripture-verse focus for the day, a story or teaching point, and reflection questions. Each entry ends with both an action that will help you carry out the directive in the verse and a prayer prompt. The entries in Zip It build upon each other, equipping you with new tools for how--or how not--to use your words. Ultimately, Zip It will challenge you to use your mouth with godly purposes. To build . . . not to break. To bless . . . not to badger. To encourage . . . not to embitter. To praise . . . not to pounce.
Download or read book Sewing Doesn t Have to be a Mystery written by Stephnie Clark and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After teaching sewing for years Stephnie noticed all her beginning sewing students labored with the same tendencies. She found these tendencies were discouraging the desire to continue sewing. What a sad affair to crush a persons creativity: not to mention denying the pure enjoyment garnered from taking sewing classes. Therefore, she felt compelled to list the tendencies: about 30. Actually this was just the beginning of the list. After identifying the Tendency, Stephnie wrote out a description of what was happening with each tendency calling it: The Problem. The evolution continued with answers and solutions, calling them: To Clarify. Wow! Today the number is more like 90 something. Example: many times her students had trouble taking the fabric (with the finished seam) out from under the foot. Stephnie would causally place her hand in front of the sewing machine needle and ask, "Where is your take-up lever?" When the student realized the take-up lever was hiding, Stephnie's next remark was: "Turn the hand wheel like a Waterfall until the take-up lever is at its highest point. Now you can retrieve your fabric." Stephnie provided photos and drawings on the page facing each tendency. This will help you, the reader, understand the text better. The book is mostly about operating and maintaining the sewing and serging machine. However: reading patterns, a harrowing encounter; sewing over pins, not good, and wash your stash, what ever that means. Plus, a virtual plethora of sewing mysteries are unveiled as the author leads you through her tried and true techniques of sewing, cutting and general handling of fabrics, sewing machines, hand sewing (yes you need to do hand sewing), posture is embraced (it is important), etcetera. Stephnie is trained in tailoring, drapery making, costume creating, stuffed toy making, quilting, and pattern alteration through Nancy Zieman's Fitting Finesse. So much fabric: so little time. Study the book, take it with you to a sewing class and have fun!

Download or read book Zen Zest Zip Zap and Zing written by Osho and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen is not a religion, it is living life in its totality, herenow. Religions are always postponing life: they are giving you beautiful illusions about life somewhere in the future, far away, beyond death. That is a strategy to divert and distract you from the realities of life. That is pure cowardice. It is also a rationalization so that you can be consoled: ’If life is miserable today there is nothing to be worried about, tomorrow everything is going to be well. In fact, to suffer life today is a preparation for enjoying life tomorrow, so the more you suffer the better. There is no reason to complain, no reason to rebel, no reason to revolt against all those things which are causing misery.’
