Book A Free Flame

Download or read book A Free Flame written by Ann-Marie Priest and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***Highly commended in the 2016 Dorothy Hewett Award for an Unpublished Manuscript*** 'I need to be a writer, ' Ruth Park told her future husband, D'Arcy Niland, on the eve of their marriage. 'That's what I need from life.' She was not the only one. At a time when women were considered incapable of being 'real' artists, a number of precocious girls in Australian cities were weighing their chances and laying their plans. A Free Flame explores the lives of four such women, Gwen Harwood, Dorothy Hewett, Christina Stead and Ruth Park, each of whom went on to become a notable Australian writer. They were very different women from very different backgrounds, but they shared a sense of urgency around their vocation-their 'need' to be a writer-that would not let them rest. Weaving biography, literary criticism and cultural history, this book looks at the ways in which these women laid siege to the artist's identity, and ultimately remade it in their own image. *** "Ann-Marie Priest writes with admirable clarity and a strong sense of appreciation for her subjects. A Free Flame weaves fascinating biographical details and critical insights into an examination of the various ways in which these talented artists negotiated the tension between their sense of vocation and the hindering cultural expectations they faced as women." --James Ley, critic and judge of the Dorothy Hewett Award [Subject: Non-Fiction, Biography, Gender Studies]

My last year of med school, the best year ever because of her—my future changed forever because of her… From the moment I saw her, I knew there was something between us not many people find. Passionate nights, stolen kisses throughout our busy days; she and I had the same goals—goals that would end the special connection we’d found. Leaving her behind proved to be the hardest thing I’d ever done. Finding her one day in a Seattle hospital, tending to one of my best friends, proved that old flame had never completely gone out. No longer the easygoing, easy-to-love girl I’d known years ago, she’d become guarded. My only question—why? Book Halogen Free Flame Retardant Polymers

Download or read book Halogen Free Flame Retardant Polymers written by Suprakas Sinha Ray and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of recent academic and industrial research efforts concerning halogen-free flame-retardant (FR) polymers and their nanocomposites. It summarizes the synthesis methods for various types of halogen-free FR polymers and their nanocomposites, and critically reviews their flame-retardant behavior, toxic-gas evolution during combustion, and inhibition methods. In turn, the book discusses the importance of metal oxide nanoparticles, nanoclay, and graphene in flame inhibition and addresses the FR properties of various FR compounds containing polymers, their FR mechanisms, and fire toxicant releasing and inhibition methods in detail. It systematically covers the synergetic effects between different FR compounds, and explains the significance of thermal stability and melt dripping for polymers’ FR properties. The fundamental concepts described here are essential to understanding the FR behaviors of various polymers and their nanocomposites, and to developing efficient, environmentally friendly FR polymers and nanocomposites for a wide range of applications. This book is ideally suited for researchers in the fields of polymer science and engineering, and for graduate students in chemistry and materials science.

Book Thermochemical Properties of Flame Gases from Fine Wildland Fuels

Download or read book Thermochemical Properties of Flame Gases from Fine Wildland Fuels written by Frank A. Albini and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a theoretical model for calculating thermochemical properties of the gaseous fuel that burns in the free flame at the edge of a spreading fire in fine forest fuels. Predicted properties are the heat of combustion, stoichiometric air/fuel mass ratio, mass-averaged temperature, and mass fraction of unburned fuel in the gas mixture emitted from the flame-producing zone. These variables depend upon readily determined intrinsic properties of the fuel, the fuel moisture content, fuel particle surface/volume ratio, particle mass density, and fuel loading. Numerical examples are given for several fuel-types, exploring the sensitivity to moisture content, char fraction formed (an inherent property of the fuel that can be modified by fire retardants), and an energy-leakage fraction related to fuelbed opacity. All the equations are given in appendixes.

Book Nonsteady Flame Propagation

Download or read book Nonsteady Flame Propagation written by George H. Markstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonsteady Flame Propagation provides information pertinent to flame propagation in gaseous media. This book focuses on linearized treatments and the comparison of their results with experimental observations. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the challenge of nonlinear problems and examines the essentially nonlinear character of the flame phenomena, which has been artificially suppressed in analyses by the use of linearized perturbation treatments. This text then summarizes the development regarding rocket-shaped burners. Other chapters consider the advantages as well as the limitations of linearized analyses. This book discusses as well a general treatment of the discontinuous-flame-front model and summarizes the results of studies of burner that use secondary air. The final chapter deals with re-examining the possibilities of using pulsating combustion in propulsion or in other applications. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers, chemists, scientists, and research workers.

Book The Non halogenated Flame Retardant Handbook

Download or read book The Non halogenated Flame Retardant Handbook written by Alexander B. Morgan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-stop, practical handbook containing all of the current commercial non-halogenated flame retardant technologies as well as experimental systems near commercialization In response to the emphasis on replacing halogenated flame retardants with alternate technologies, this handbook focuses on existing non-halogenated flame retardants and the experimental close-to-production systems that are available today. The Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant Handbook starts with an overview of the regulations and customer perceptions driving non-halogenated flame retardant selections over older halogenated technologies. It then moves on to cover the known major classes of non-halogenated flame retardants, before concluding with the current niche-performing technologies and untried commercial contenders of the future. The Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant Handbook: Takes a practical approach to addressing the narrow subject of non-halogenated flame retardancy—placing more emphasis on flame retardant selection for specific plastics, practical considerations in flame retardant material design, and the various technologies’ strengths and limits Focuses on the proper use of non-halogenated flame retardants, rather than the mechanics of how they work Discusses important future trends in flame retardancy Features sections written by industrial and chemical experts who know how to apply the technology to polymers for fire safety needs
