Book Survivability Analysis for Impacting Warheads with Shear Control Grids

Download or read book Survivability Analysis for Impacting Warheads with Shear Control Grids written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearson's shear control method of fragmentation control has been successfully employed in a variety of bombs and warheads and has potential application for impacting warheads. In this study we have investigated the response of a grooved warhead case to impact loads by using the finite element code HONDO II. The characteristic response of the case segment containing the groove is the appearance of two linearly shaped regions of yielding emanating from the groove location. The effect of a shear-control grid on the survivability of a warhead depends on the grid location and on the groove depth.

Book Conventional Warhead Systems Physics and Engineering Design

Download or read book Conventional Warhead Systems Physics and Engineering Design written by Richard M. Lloyd and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 1998 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book written that discusses the physics of designing warheads against ballistic missiles. In his exploration of the mathematical equations and logic behind antiballistic missiles (ATBMs) warhead design, Lloyd takes an in-depth look at warhead design and endgame concepts against ATBMs. Hailed as the perfect companion to Tactical Missile Warheads, the book demonstrates the system aspects you will need as a systems warhead engineer designing complex tactical and defense warheads under tight budgetary constraints. Conventional Warhead Systems Physics and Engineering Design features a previously unpublished investigation of energy, momentum, and methods for estimating damage on very complex ballistic missile payloads, such as submunitions of chemical and biological nature. Direct hit, warhead design, and fragmentation are comprehensively discussed for the first time in print. High strain rate, explosives, thermodynamics, heat transfer, chemistry, penetration mechanics, statistics, dynamics, and finite element equations are also covered extensively in this single, compact volume. The book contains over 2000 mathematical equations with more than 500 figures that give todays warhead engineers new ideas and knowledge in warhead design. Book A Fragmentation Model for Cylindrical Warheads

Download or read book A Fragmentation Model for Cylindrical Warheads written by John Pearson and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a descriptive model for the expansion and fragmentation behavior for the case of a single-point, end-initiated cylindrical warhead. This model divides the overall behavioral process of the warhead case into four distinct zones of behavior which occur between initial case motion and fragment impact. The report describes what is happening in each zone in terms of (1) the physical behavior of the warhead case and (2) the respective velocities of the metal case or fragments. This model is based on the results of numerous experimental studies using high speed photography and fragmentation test arenas. Several examples in the use of the model are presented based on these studies.

Book Fragmentation of Shallow Grooved Warhead

Download or read book Fragmentation of Shallow Grooved Warhead written by and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This test was conducted to determine the ability of shallow coined grooves, 1/16 in. deep and in a square grid pattern to control fragment size in a warhead model. The warhead used was No. 142, cylindrical, 4-1/8 in. in diameter, with a 3/8 in. wall, and Composition C-3 loaded. The grid-pattern shallow grooves of Warhead No. 142 were unsatisfactory in controlling fragment size. It is believed that grooves having depths of greater than 50% of wall thickness are needed for controlling fragment size in a warhead of this design.

Book Computational and Experimental Determination of Fragmentation for Naturally Fragmenting Warheads

Download or read book Computational and Experimental Determination of Fragmentation for Naturally Fragmenting Warheads written by Willis Mock (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational and experimental investigation of the fragmentation response of Armco iron and HF-1 steel explosively filled cylinders and an HF-1 steel projectile is presented. SRI International Lagrangian finite-difference stress wave propagation codes that contain brittle fracture and shear banding models were used for the computational simulations. Gas gun Hugoniot and soft-recovery experiments were performed for HF-1 steel to determine input parameters for the brittle fracture model. Cylinder and projectile fragment mass distributions were experimentally determined for comparison with the simulations. Cylinder computations and experiments were performed for two heat treatments of HF-1 steel to investigate microstructural changes on the fragmentation behavior. Computed stress, particle velocity, and crack concentration histories are presented for an HF-1 steel cylinder. A scheme was devised for characterizing the recovered fragments from the cylinder and projectile experiments with respect to their fracture surfaces. (Author).

Book Missile Warhead Modeling Computations and Experiments

Download or read book Missile Warhead Modeling Computations and Experiments written by William W. Predebon and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational warhead modeling capability has been developed which models the effects of warhead length to diameter ratio, end confinement variation, explosive material and initiation posture, and internal cavity shape and material. These effects are modeled with a time-dependent, two-dimensional, Lagrangian finite - difference computer code, integrally modified to include fragment separation (or fragmentation for continuous warheads) and subsequent explosive gas leakage between fragments. Experimental results of a variety of modeled missile warheads (discrete-fragment warheads) are presented and compared with the computational results. In the experiments the fragment speed and angle distributions with respect to their original position on the warhead are determined through time-sequential, orthogonal flash radiography of the warhead fragment spray in flight, and soft recovery of the fragments after launch.

Book Shock Waves and High Strain Rate Phenomena in Metals

Download or read book Shock Waves and High Strain Rate Phenomena in Metals written by Mare Meyers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific understanding of high-velocity deformation has advanced substantially during the past decade. On the one hand, the framework for a theory explaining the metallurgical effects of shock waves is beginning to take shape; on the other hand, the technological applications of high strain-rate processes have found their way into industries in countries around the world. Ex plosive cladding, welding, forming, compaction and consolidation, cutting, and hardening, in addition to high energy-rate deformation processes using other energy sources, are some of the topics of contemporary technological importance. Metallurgical effects are of the utmost importance in both the scientific understanding of the phenomena involved, and in the successful development and utilization of the associated applications. The international conference upon which this book is based had as its major objectives the acceleration of progress in the field of high-strain rate deformation and fabrication, including applications, by providing a forum for the exchange of state-of-the art information on the metallurgical effects of high strain-rate deformation and fabrication; and the organization of this informa tion into a timely and coherent body of knowledge focused around significant areas and applications. This volume is a manifestation of these objectives. In addition, the contents of this book were organized to provide for a somewhat logical perspective of the fundamentals, development, and state-of-the-art applications of high strain-rate and shock phenomena.
