From the beginning of his literary career, he espoused a mystical belief that the humdrum ordinary world hid a more mysterious and strange world beyond. His gothic and decadent works of the 1890s concluded that the lifting of this veil could lead to madness, sex, or death, and usually a combination of all three. He also wrote The Three Impostors, The Terror, The Inmost Light, The White People, The Novel of the Black Seal, The Novel of the White Powder, The Red Hand, A Fragment of Life, The Shining Pyramid and A New Christmas Carol.

Book excerpt: In this pioneering study Vivienne Richmond reveals the importance of dress to the nineteenth-century English poor, who valued clothing not only for its practical utility, but also as a central element in the creation and assertion of collective and individual identities. During this period of rapid industrialisation and urbanisation formal dress codes, corporate and institutional uniforms, and the spread of urban fashions replaced the informal dress of agricultural England. This laid the foundations of modern popular dress and generated fears about the visual blurring of social boundaries as new modes of manufacturing and retailing expanded the wardrobes of the majority. However, a significant impoverished minority remained outside this process. Clothed by diminishing parish assistance, expanding paternalistic charity and the second-hand trade, they formed a 'sartorial underclass' whose material deprivation and visual distinction was a cause of physical discomfort and psychological trauma.

Eliot, W.H. Auden, and Samuel Beckett -- experiment in certain of their works in finding the shapelessness of a moment in history that increasingly confidently called itself 'modern', which was to call itself shapeless. The project of modernism in the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, was to find a story to tell about an era full of beginnings. The project of 'Granular Modernism' was to find a way of turning the inchoateness of the modern moment into art. Granular Modernism takes from the Naturalist movements of the nineteenth and early twentieth century its attentiveness to the process of mundane experiences like eating or waiting. But where Naturalism sets out to offer a complete picture of a way of life, Granular Modernism's eating and waiting fail to amount to anything more; to paraphrase Evelyn Waugh: 'The most they can hope for is a cumulative futility.' Frank Norris once described one of Stephen Crane's narrators as: 'a locust in a grain elevator attempting to empty the silo by carrying off one grain at a time.' Norris is being dismissive. But his image of pointless, meticulous, indefinite manoeuvre potentially defines the ambition of the Granular Modernists.

Book excerpt: Bruce Bairnsfather (1888-1959) was a British soldier, illustrator and author and creator of Old Bill , the cartoon character who perhaps best illustrated the practical philosophy of the British private soldier during World War I. After training at Art School he produced advertising posters for products such as Lipton Tea, Players Tobacco and Flowers Beer. On the outbreak of the First World War he rejoined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and within a couple of weeks had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. While on the Western Front, he drew pictures of trench life and in 1915 The Bystander magazine began publishing his drawings which proved extremely popular with the soldiers in the trenches. Later his drawings were published in a series of books entitled, Fragments From France. Bullets and Billets (1916) is his best-selling autobiography. Other works include From Mud to Mufti (1919), Carry on Sergeant (1927), Laughing Through the Orient (1933), Old Bill Looks at Europe (1935) and Old Bill Stands By (1939).
