Book Fault Lines

Download or read book Fault Lines written by Karl Pillemer, Ph.D. and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real solutions to a hidden epidemic: family estrangement. Estrangement from a family member is one of the most painful life experiences. It is devastating not only to the individuals directly involved--collateral damage can extend upward, downward, and across generations, More than 65 million Americans suffer such rifts, yet little guidance exists on how to cope with and overcome them. In this book, Karl Pillemer combines the advice of people who have successfully reconciled with powerful insights from social science research. The result is a unique guide to mending fractured families. Fault Lines shares for the first time findings from Dr. Pillemer's ten-year groundbreaking Cornell Reconciliation Project, based on the first national survey on estrangement; rich, in-depth interviews with hundreds of people who have experienced it; and insights from leading family researchers and therapists. He assures people who are estranged, and those who care about them, that they are not alone and that fissures can be bridged. Through the wisdom of people who have "been there," Fault Lines shows how healing is possible through clear steps that people can use right away in their own families. It addresses such questions as: How do rifts begin? What makes estrangement so painful? Why is it so often triggered by a single event? Are you ready to reconcile? How can you overcome past hurts to build a new future with a relative? Tackling a subject that is achingly familiar to almost everyone, especially in an era when powerful outside forces such as technology and mobility are lessening family cohesion, Dr. Pillemer combines dramatic stories, science-based guidance, and practical repair tools to help people find the path to reconciliation.

Book excerpt: Most convicts arriving in New South Wales didn’t expect to make their fortunes. Some went on to great success, but countless convicts and free migrants struggled with limited prospects, discrimination and misfortune. Many desperate people turned to The Benevolent Society, Australia’s first charity founded in 1813, for assistance and sustenance. In this rich and revealing book, Tanya Evans collaborates with family historians to present the everyday lives of these people. We see many families who have fallen on hard times because of drink, unwanted pregnancy, violence, unemployment or plain bad luck, seeking help and often shunted from asylums or institutions. In the careful tracing of families, we see the way in which disadvantage can be passed down from one generation to the next. The extensive archives of The Benevolent Society allow us to reclaim these unknown lives and understand our history better, not to mention the often random nature of betterment and progress.

Download or read book The Beauty of Broken written by Elisa Morgan and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find beauty and hope by facing and dealing with the messiness of family life. The family is an imperfect institution. Broken people become broken parents who make broken families. But actually, broken is normal and exactly where God wants us. In The Beauty of Broken, Elisa Morgan, one of today’s most respected female Christian leaders, for the first time shares her very personal story of brokenness—from her first family of origin to the second, represented by her husband and two grown children. Over the years, Elisa’s family struggled privately with issues many parents must face, including: alcoholism and drug addiction infertility and adoption teen pregnancy and abortion divorce, homosexuality, and death Each story layers onto the next to reveal the brokenness that comes into our lives without invitation. “We’ve bought into the myth of the perfect family,” says Elisa. “Formulaic promises about the family may have originated in well-meaning intentions, but such thinking isn’t realistic. It’s not helpful. It’s not even kind.” Instead she offers hope in the form of “broken family values” that allow parents to grow and thrive with God. Values such as commitment, humility, relinquishment, and respect carry us to new places of understanding. Owning our brokenness shapes us into God’s best idea for us and enables us to discover the beauty in ourselves and each member of our family.

Book Rules of Estrangement

Download or read book Rules of Estrangement written by Joshua Coleman, PhD and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide for parents whose adult children have cut off contact that reveals the hidden logic of estrangement, explores its cultural causes, and offers practical advice for parents trying to reestablish contact with their adult children. “Finally, here’s a hopeful, comprehensive, and compassionate guide to navigating one of the most painful experiences for parents and their adult children alike.”—Lori Gottlieb, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone Labeled a silent epidemic by a growing number of therapists and researchers, estrangement is one of the most disorienting and painful experiences of a parent's life. Popular opinion typically tells a one-sided story of parents who got what they deserved or overly entitled adult children who wrongly blame their parents. However, the reasons for estrangement are far more complex and varied. As a result of rising rates of individualism, an increasing cultural emphasis on happiness, growing economic insecurity, and a historically recent perception that parents are obstacles to personal growth, many parents find themselves forever shut out of the lives of their adult children and grandchildren. As a trusted psychologist whose own daughter cut off contact for several years and eventually reconciled, Dr. Joshua Coleman is uniquely qualified to guide parents in navigating these fraught interactions. He helps to alleviate the ongoing feelings of shame, hurt, guilt, and sorrow that commonly attend these dynamics. By placing estrangement into a cultural context, Dr. Coleman helps parents better understand the mindset of their adult children and teaches them how to implement the strategies for reconciliation and healing that he has seen work in his forty years of practice. Rules of Estrangement gives parents the language and the emotional tools to engage in meaningful conversation with their child, the framework to cultivate a healthy relationship moving forward, and the ability to move on if reconciliation is no longer possible. While estrangement is a complex and tender topic, Dr. Coleman's insightful approach is based on empathy and understanding for both the parent and the adult child.

Book excerpt: Life would be easier if I really was an evil witch like the rest of my family. I did it. I managed to free all of the creatures enslaved in the pages of the Lovell family’s disgusting grimoire and I destroyed the book to make sure they stayed free. I thought life would go back to normal once I finished my task, but boy was I wrong. Turns out I’m not the last remaining Lovell witch after all. I have an older sister, and she’s been hiding from everyone—including me—for years. Even better? One of my lovers was responsible for wiping her from everyone’s memory. And now, not only has my long-lost-sister been captured by a power-hungry coven who wants to tap into her powerful Lovell heritage…but they’re coming for me and my people as well. I just got my new family of weirdos freed from the Lovell grimoire. There is no way I’m going to let some creeps from another coven steal them and use their power to start an interspecies magical war. But getting my lovers back means cooperating with The Supernatural Alliance—the governing body responsible for my parents’ beheadings—and that sketchy partnership might cost me everything. Author's Note This story is part of my serial, The Bestiary, on Kindle Vella. It is part of an ongoing series, and I will continue to release new books as the story progresses. A Fractured Family is 108,000 words long. The main plot arc is resolved, however since this is a series, a new complication is introduced at the end of the book, so expect a “for now”/”and then” feel. If you are interested in reading book 3 as I write it, you can find it on Vella. Season 3/Book 3 starts on episode 82 with a few exclusive scenes. You can also read along on my Patreon page. Series Content Warnings *poly romance, contains MF, MM, FF, NB/intersex romantic interactions, as well as multiples *swearing and explicit sexual content *some characters have suffered trauma in their past, most of which is off page/mentioned in passing *there is one scene in book 1 where a character with PTSD loses control during a BDSM session. The MC is not actually harmed, but this may be triggering to some readers *stupid humor and a sarcastic main character who is just done with the world's bullshit, but also has a moral compass no matter how much she wants to wish otherwise

Book Broken Family

Download or read book Broken Family written by Don Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Family shares the fun, good, and bad of growing up in a large family or even any size of family that does not stay working at togetherness every day. The author's message is from his heart-a personal experience with a wonderful family of lots of activities and full of life become Broken. It covers the fun, joys, adventures, and heartbreak of growing up. Our author grew up in a small town in Iowa. He wants to encourage his readers to stay tight with parents and family members, to not ever assume everything is fine and being taken care of and be fair to all, to never let a sibling of the family abuse a parent, and to discuss estate matters with parents and family as parents age. Our author wants to help from his experience, if possible, to let other families stay away from becoming Broken. Don is the second born of a family with nine boys and three girls. Family has always been important to him. He always tried to please and help his mother with housework and his father with farmwork to the best of his ability. Don did not have to be told a second time to do some things. He spent two years with the army in New Jersey at the Nike base. After discharge from the army, he went to work for American Airlines for thirty-seven years. Retirement gave him many days of freedom. He golfed for a year, bought ten acres south of Winterset, Iowa, built three ponds, a covered bridge over his overfl ow, a small barn, a six-bedroom house, and planted a one-acre garden. After about eight years of enjoying his adventure of that achievement, he discovered a slow pitch ball. He began playing ball again, which he enjoyed so much in his youth. Remember, his family was of nine boys and three girls: a baseball team and cheerleaders. He still plays for three different teams: seventy-five-year-old and eighty-year-old travel teams. Every June, he meets the challenges the Senior Olympics have to offer in football distance (he has taken first place in his age each year), softball accuracy, etc. He has over a hundred medals from his years of competition. In the summer of 2018, he was inducted in the Senior Games Hall of Fame. Don has been blessed in his life and enjoys sharing the good and bad of his life so far, which he knows has made him what he has become today.
