Book A Fracture Mechanics Approach for Designing Adhesively Bonded Joints

Download or read book A Fracture Mechanics Approach for Designing Adhesively Bonded Joints written by WS. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental investigation was undertaken to determine if the adhesive debond initiation stress could be predicted for arbitrary joint geometries. The analysis was based upon a threshold total strain-energy-release rate (Gth) concept. Two bonded systems were tested: T300/5208 graphite/epoxy adherends bonded with either EC-3445 or FM-300 adhesive. The Gth for each adhesive was determined from cracked-lap-shear (CLS) specimens by debond initiation tests. Finite-element analyses of various tapered CLS specimen geometries predicted the specimen stress at which the total strain-energy-release rate (GT) equaled Gth at the joint tip. Experiments verified the predictions. The approach described herein predicts the maximum stress at which an adhesive joint can be cycled yet not debond. Total strain-energy-release rate appeared to be the driving parameter for cyclic debonding and debond initiation in structural adhesives, and debond initiation and growth were found to occur with virtually no peel stress present.

Book Strength Prediction of Adhesively Bonded Joints

Download or read book Strength Prediction of Adhesively Bonded Joints written by Raul D. S. G. Campilho and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesively-bonded joints provide many advantages over conventional mechanical fasteners and are increasingly receiving attention as an alternative to mechanical joints in engineering applications. The traditional fasteners usually result in the cutting of fibers and hence the introduction of stress concentrations, both of which reduce structural integrity. By contrast, bonded joints are more continuous and have potential advantages of strength-to-weight ratio, design flexibility, and ease of fabrication. This book provides an overview of available analytical methods as well as numerical methods.

Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding / adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.

Book Adhesion and Adhesives

Download or read book Adhesion and Adhesives written by Anthony J. Kinloch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, or so, the growth in the use of adhesives, especially in ever more technically demanding applications, has been rapid and many major developments in the technology of adhesives have been reported. This growth has also led to attention being focused on somewhat more basic studies of the science of adhesion and adhesives, and in recent years our level of fundamental knowledge concerning the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints has increased dramatically. Such studies have, of course, been aided greatly by the development of the tools at the disposal of the investigators. For example, specific surface analytical techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, and the increasingly sophisticated methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics have been put to good use in furthering our understanding of the science of adhesion and adhesives. The present book attempts to review the multidisciplined subject of adhesion and adhesives, considering both the science and technology involved in the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints. The author would like to thank his friends and colleagues for useful discus sions and help in the preparation of this book. I am particularly grateful to P. Cawley, J. Comyn, W. A. Lees, A. C. Roulin-Moloney, W. C. Wake, J. G. Williams and R. J. Young who have read and commented on various chapters and P. Farr for preparing the diagrams.

Book Delamination Fracture Between Adhesive and Adherends in Bonded Joints

Download or read book Delamination Fracture Between Adhesive and Adherends in Bonded Joints written by SN. Chatterjee and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of a fracture mechanics approach for predicting failure in single lap joints with composite adherends is examined. A finite-element analysis is employed for stress analysis and calculation of strain energy release rates for small disbonds between the adhesive and the adherends. Tests conducted show that delamination growth takes place in the resin-rich areas of the adherends close to the adhesive layer. For this reason, the critical strain energy release rate determined from Mode II tests on composite adherends is used as the fracture parameter and is equated to the total energy release rate for failure prediction. Effects of large out-of-plane deformation in the adherends and nonlinear shear response of the adhesive are also studied. Data from tests with and without major bondline flaws are correlated with the analytical results. The correlations show that with proper material characterization studies and realistic stress analyses, fracture mechanics can be a useful tool for predicting the load-carrying capacity of adhesively bonded joints.

Book Fatigue and Fracture of Adhesively Bonded Composite Joints

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture of Adhesively Bonded Composite Joints written by Anastasios P. Vassilopoulos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly accepted that the majority of engineering failures happen due to fatigue or fracture phenomena. Adhesive bonding is a prevailing joining technique, widely used for critical connections in composite structures. However, the lack of knowledge regarding fatigue and fracture behaviour, and the shortage of tools for credible fatigue design, hinders the potential benefits of adhesively bonded joints. The demand for reliable and safe structures necessitates deep knowledge in this area in order to avoid catastrophic structural failures. This book reviews recent research in the field of fatigue and fracture of adhesively-bonded composite joints. The first part of the book discusses the experimental investigation of the reliability of adhesively-bonded composite joints, current research on understanding damage mechanisms, fatigue and fracture, durability and ageing as well as implications for design. The second part of the book covers the modelling of bond performance and failure mechanisms in different loading conditions. - A detailed reference work for researchers in aerospace and engineering - Expert coverage of different adhesively bonded composite joint structures - An overview of joint failure
