Book A Forestry Program for Women s Organizations Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Forestry Program for Women s Organizations Classic Reprint written by Lilian T. Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Forestry Program for Women's Organizations And this is not one of the causes in which women, however they may long to act, find themselves helpless to do so. Many opportunities lie Open to women's organizations for practical activity in the forestry cause. The first essential of systematic work for forest conservation is that each forested State have a State forestry department. In the few forested States that have not yet established such departments the women's organization has a clean-cut job ready to its hand. In many of the States forestry depart ments have been created, but are crippled by the meagerness of their appropriations. Additional funds may be needed to improve the State's system of fire prevention and control or to support the intensely practical project of sending out foresters to teach farmers and other private landowners how to de velop: and care for woodlands; or they may go into the purchase of State forests. The creation or en largement of State or municipal forests is an activity in which a number of women's organizations have chosen to go on their own responsibility, purchasing forest land as a useful and perpetual gift to the State or the community. Land for this purpose can usually be bought very cheaply, since forests will grow on land totally unsuitable for farm purposes; and thus with only a small outlay it is possible to establish a public resource of value and an object of civic pride which incidentally stimulates the interest of the public in forestry. Women's clubs have sometimes found an additional incentive in the opportunity to purchase a tract of special historical interest or an especially beautiful forest area which otherwise might have been disfigured by destructive lumbering. Download or read book A National Forestry Research Program Classic Reprint written by United States Forest Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A National Forestry Research Program The colleges and universities have gradually strengthened their for estry research programs in recent years, particularly the institutions with agricultural experiment stations and forestry schools. This re search is supported mostly by State and other non-federal funds. Some Federal support to forestry research, however, is derived from Department of Agriculture grant funds made available to the States through cooperative programs administered through the Cooperative State Research Service. 13the Forest Service also provides cooperative financing of selected projects at universities to stimulate additional research on projects of joint interest. In the colleges and universities lie substantial Opportunities for future expanded forestry research. Their research potential has as yet barely been realized and they could and should be doing more. The national program recognizes the importance of institutional research. It proposes as a part of the Federal program a strengthening of cc operative research at the colleges and universities. The coordination of research has also been carefully considered as a necessary part of the national program. Coordination 1s achieved in a number of ways. The Department of Agriculture maintains a uniform project system under which all project proposals by research agencies of the Department are reviewed and coordinated. Tech nical advisory committees composed of university, industry, and F cd eral scientists meet regularly to discuss research plans and projects underway. Formally constituted regional research committees plan and do joint research on problems of interest to several States. Special panels of industry representatives are organized periodically to review and coordinate research in a special problem field such as seasoning of wood or glues and gluing: Other committees are fre quently formed to coordinate research on special problems such as pole blight disease research or brush control studies. This t pe of coordinating machinery has been effective m the past. It shou d con tinne as an essential part of future expanded programs of the indus tries, colleges and universities, and the Department of Agriculture. Book The Forest Ranger

Download or read book The Forest Ranger written by Herbert Kaufman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the rare book that remains in print for nearly fifty years, earning wide acclaim as a classic. The Forest Ranger has been essential reading for generations of professionals and scholars in forestry, public administration, and organizational behavior who are interested in the administration of public lands and how the top managers of a large, dispersed organization with multiple objectives like the Forest Service shape the behavior of its field officers into a coherent, unified program. Published as a special reprint in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Forest Service, The Forest Ranger is as relevant and timely today as when it was first issued in 1960. In addition to the original text, this special reprint of The Forest Ranger includes two new forewords and an afterword that highlight how much we have learned from Herbert Kaufman. The first foreword, by Harold K. (Pete) Steen, former president of the Forest History Society, considers the book's impact on the forestry community and explains its continued relevance in light of changes in the culture and mission of today's Forest Service. The second, by Richard P. Nathan, co-director of the Rockefeller Institute of Government, considers the book's contribution to our understanding of administrative and organizational behavior. A new afterword by author Herbert Kaufman describes how his landmark study came into being and offers a candid assessment of how his theories about the agency's operations and its future have held up over time. In 1960, the Forest Service had a welldeserved reputation for excellence, and The Forest Ranger was a seminal analysis of the how's and why's of its success. Kaufman also warned, however, that an organization so unified and well adapted to its environment would have difficulties navigating social change. He was right in his concerns: The environmental, civil rights, and women's movements have all presented challenges to the character and purpose of the Forest Service, ultimately changing the organization in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Now, as then, The Forest Ranger is a striking and prescient case study of how a complex organization operates and evolves over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening book brings together the work of gender and forestry specialists from various backgrounds and fields of research and action to analyse global gender conditions as related to forests. Using a variety of methods and approaches, they build on a spectrum of theoretical perspectives to bring depth and breadth to the relevant issues and address timely and under-studied themes. Focusing particularly on tropical forests, the book presents both local case studies and global comparative studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as the US and Europe. The studies range from personal histories of elderly American women’s attitudes toward conservation, to a combined qualitative / quantitative international comparative study on REDD+, to a longitudinal examination of oil palm and gender roles over time in Kalimantan. Issues are examined across scales, from the household to the nation state and the global arena; and reach back to the past to inform present and future considerations. The collection will be of relevance to academics, researchers, policy makers and advocates with different levels of familiarity with gender issues in the field of forestry.
