Book New Opposition in the Middle East

Download or read book New Opposition in the Middle East written by Dara Conduit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a Contentious Politics lens to examine patterns of contestation since 2009 and 2011 among the Middle East's most important opposition actors. The volume is comprised of seven chapters that ask questions in relation to the responsiveness of opposition groups to their political environments, the long-term legacies of authoritarianism, and whether the post-2009/2011 political environment is better or worse for Middle Eastern oppositions. It interrogates the ways in which oppositions have morphed in relation to this changed operating environment, subjectively interpreting the costs and benefits of contestation in order to maximise political opportunities. To some oppositions, changes in the power balance between regime structures and opposition agents led to unprecedented opportunity for political action, while for others, structures were galvanised to restrict opposition activities. In total, the volume shows that even though the Arab Uprisings and Green Movement achieved few of their overt goals, the events unleashed smaller shifts across the region that have led to a fundamental change in the politics of contestation amongst the region’s oppositions. These patterns echo experiences in other parts of the world, including the coloured revolutions in post-Soviet states, and the political environment in Chile after Pinochet.

Book Ogham

  • Author : John Saunders
  • Publisher : Covenant Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-01-24
  • ISBN : 1645594963
  • Pages : 502 pages

Download or read book Ogham written by John Saunders and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of hidden relics. It spans over two thousand years and touches on the Bible, young Jesus, the "missing years" of his life after age twelve, and the relics themselves. This is a fascinating story about the years between then and now that moves from Judea to ancient England, involves British and Spanish kings, early North America and Nova Scotia, and, finally, Acadian Louisiana. It involves the actual mystery associated with the Money Pit of Nova Scotia, where many famous and wealthy people have searched for its secrets since its discovery by three young men in 1795. The History Channel details all this in the Curse of Oak Island. As the current-day protagonists do their own search in and around south Louisiana, readers travel through history with them and learn the who, what, when, and why of the material buried on Oak Island. The relics buried on Oak Island include religious ones from the early days of Jesus. Among them was a significant ancient document written in Ogham. Ogham is a cryptic alphabet of twenty characters or letters created in Gaul and Britain around the time of Jesus and used in the time of Roman occupation as a secret means of communication. This story also tells the tale of the "missing" eighteen years in Jesus's life contained in Luke 2:52: "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor of God and man." From start to finish, Ogham will provide a story that offers a completely altered perspective of Christianity. Its ultimate resolution forms a natural companion to Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

Book People Performance Pay

Download or read book People Performance Pay written by Thomas P. Flannery and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-01-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People, Performance, and Pay identifies today's four most common organizational work cultures - functional, process, time-based, and network - and explains how to align innovative pay policies with each. With examples from LEGO, Hallmark, Holiday Inn, and other leading organizations, the authors explain how to assess an organization's current culture and determine what its future culture should be. They then demonstrate pay's role in such change initiatives, and how compensation must be integrated with other human resource processes, such as selection, training, and performance management. They also discuss the full range of pay strategies available today and how they can be best used to move the organization forward; for example, they recommend decreasing an organization's emphasis on base pay as it shifts from a functional culture to a process, time-based, or network culture. They also offer guidance on establishing team rewards, especially important in process and team-based cultures, and make a compelling case for putting more pay at risk through variable pay strategies. Here also is strategic advice on competency-based pay, performance-based rewards such as gain-sharing, executive pay, and benefits programs. As responsibility for compensation strategies and compensation decisions shifts away from the realm of the Human Resource Department, line managers and senior executives will find People, Performance, and Pay an invaluable reference for effectively using salary, incentives, and benefits to motivate and reward employees, improve quality, and increase productivity.

Once described as a barren island, the former fishing community has been transformed by its own economic miracle into one of Asia's World Cities, taking in its stride the territory's 1997 return to Chinese sovereignty. Beneath the surface of Hong Kong's clichéd self-image as Pearl of the Orient and Shopping Paradise, Michael Ingham reveals a city rich in history, myth, and cultural diversity.

Book Arabs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Mackintosh-Smith
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-30
  • ISBN : 030018235X
  • Pages : 567 pages

Download or read book Arabs written by Tim Mackintosh-Smith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting, comprehensive history of the Arab peoples and tribes that explores the role of language as a cultural touchstone This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances. Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia. Mackintosh-Smith reveals how linguistic developments—from pre-Islamic poetry to the growth of script, Muhammad’s use of writing, and the later problems of printing Arabic—have helped and hindered the progress of Arab history, and investigates how, even in today’s politically fractured post–Arab Spring environment, Arabic itself is still a source of unity and disunity.
