One is an arrogant, lonely U.S. Army soldier serving in the highly secretive National Security Agency. The other is an ambitious KGB officer with access to the U.S.S.R.'s most sensitive documents. Both betray their countries, but their fates and motivations are very different. "Fool's Mate" reconstructs the Lipka investigation through the eyes of author John Whiteside, the FBI Special Agent who led the case from start to finish, telling a story as relevant today as it was in 1965. With the arrest of ten Russian illegals in 2010 and the 2013 release of classified National Security Agency documents by Edward Snowden, "Fool's Mate" reminds us just how vulnerable national security is to both foreign intelligence services and men like Lipka, willing to sell out their country from within.

Book excerpt: Rafe ffoxe-Gentry, a snooty, upper-class Englishman working for GTG, a crooked multinational based in the mythical Australian state of Galahnia, is a rakish womaniser, whose nightly Got Laid Parades terminate abruptly when he falls for his Russian wifes beautiful and eccentrically brilliant young niece, Venetia. Put in charge of a visiting delegation of Russians negotiating a commercial agreement between GTG and the USSR, with Venetia as interpreter, Rafe finds the Soviet delegates more interested in booze, nightclubs, and women than in discussions. During negotiations in Singapore, the riotous behaviour of the sozzled Soviets leads to threatening Cold War complications, major disaster being narrowly averted by Venetias ingenuity. Rafe returns triumphantly home, only to find himself in even greater trouble as the situation becomes unexpectedly perilous, homicidal and dismayingly revelatory. His affair with Venetia, once wildly sexual and heart-breakingly romantic, now degenerates into a series of despairing battles between love and hate. In turn sensual, brutal, satirical and witty, this riotous black comedy depicts the greed, corruption and madness of the H-bomb eighties, and spares no one, including its madcap hero, in its scathing portrait of an era as unrestrained and vicious as it was violent and grasping.

  • Pages : 70 pages

Download or read book Fool s Mate Themes written by Tim Sawyer and published by . This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Checkmates! We love them. This book shows 60 games using the Fool's Mate themes. Once you learn this checkmate skill, it helps you win fast. If the opportunity arises, there's no faster way to win. Fool's Mate is the shortest possible chess game. Black can win in two moves. White can win in three. Two-move games are rare, but Fool's Mate themes occur in many openings. The longest games here are 11 moves. This book is a short read with lots of diagrams. I illustrate the themes so that you can read the whole book quickly. Fool's Mate is a type of checkmate early in the game where the losing king is trapped on its original square. These mates come diagonally. Black mates the king on e1 from g3 or h4. White mates the king on e8 from h5 or g6. Look for a weakness when opponents move the f-pawn, and usually the g-pawn or h-pawn, early in the game. Players who lose a Fool's Mate are not fools. Most are simply less experienced at chess. Some are beginners. Others are less skilled at noticing tactics in advance. The rest play moves too fast to see everything (see Game 2). After the first two games, the rest are mine. For 50 years Tim Sawyer has played masters, experts, and class A players. But the games in this book were ones that he played vs club players, blitz opponents, simultaneous exhibitions, online contests, or games against chess engines. He has won 200 times with Fool's Mate themes. This book has 60 games.

Book Mano a Mano Quote Unquote

Download or read book Mano a Mano Quote Unquote written by Dave Save and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mano a Mano is a satirical story based on historical events in Zimbabwe, when Robert Gabriel Mugabe transformed himself from the much-loved Prime Minister to a controversial, polarizing figure. Millions of people have left Zimbabwe due to horrific economic times and widespread starvation. The villagers of Maze Wibb who remain behind have no choice but to rely on themselves in their fight for real independence-and soon discover that a good beginning does not guarantee a happy ending. Through sweat and blood, they build a school, hoping to secure a bright future for their children, but it soon becomes clear that the headmaster has other ideas. The book is divided into two parts: the first is a fictionalized account of true events, encompassing comprehensive descriptions of the narrator's life, his country, and his people; The second part weaves a variety of stories into one, creating a dialogue that provides an introspective look into the ways and customs of a culture across the world. This insightful novel is not just about an African country but about the strong and beautiful people who live within its borders and struggle to survive despite the appalling and dangerous conditions that surround them each day.

Book The Mystery Method

Download or read book The Mystery Method written by Mystery and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-02-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most admired men in the world of seduction" (The New York Times) teaches average guys how to approach, attract and begin intimate relationships with beautiful women For every man who always wondered why some guys have all the luck, Mystery, considered by many to be the world's greatest pickup artist, finally reveals his secrets for finding and forming relationships with some of the world's most beautiful women. Mystery gained mainstream attention for his role in Neil Strauss's New York Times bestselling exposé, The Game. Now he has written the definitive handbook on the art of the pickup. He developed his unique method over years of observing social dynamics and interacting with women in clubs to learn how to overcome the guard shield that many women use to deflect come-ons from "average frustrated chumps." The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed shares tips such as: *Give more attention to her less attractive friend at first, so your target will get jealous and try to win your attention. *Always approach a target within 3 seconds of noticing her. If a woman senses your hesitation, her perception of your value will be lower. *Don't be picky. Approach as many groups of people in a bar as you can and entertain them with fun conversation. As you move about the room, positive perception of you will grow. Now it's easy to meet anyone you want. *Smile. Guys who don't get laid, don't smile.
