Book excerpt: This report presents selected findings from the 1993/94 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study First Followup survey. The report found that only 36 percent of 1992-93 bachelor's degree recipients completed their degree within 4 years of beginning postsecondary education. Students who delayed their entry into postsecondary education took longer to complete their degree, as did those who began postsecondary education at a less-than-4-year institution. The first section presents a brief profile of the study's nationally representative sample of 10,080 recipients of bachelor's degrees at 648 institutions in 1992-93, including gender and race, age at degree receipt, degree-granting institution, and point of entry into postsecondary education. The second section presents an analysis of the amount of time taken to complete the degree and includes such data as sample definition and outcome measures, timing of entry into postsecondary education, time between high school graduation and bachelor's degree completion, interruptions in enrollment, time between entry into postsecondary education and bachelor's degree completion, gender and race, timing of entry and preparation for college, institutions attended, major field of study, and debt. The compendium provides detailed tables and describes the employment and enrollment experiences of this population in the year after graduation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commission on Civil Rights conducted its current study of ten school districts during the late fall and winter of the 1972-73 school year. The purpose of this study is to reexamine earlier findings and explore more deeply the dynamics of school desegregation and community reaction. In brief, the Commission found that one reason why many people are uneasy about desegregation is their fear that it will result in a poorer quality of education for their children. It is necessary to prepare carefully and sensitively for desegregation. The technical problems of achieving desegregation, such as determining the most appropriate desegregation technique and dealing with the problems incident to increased busing, have proven to be far less formidable than previously believed. Many school officials, in their concern to facilitate a successful transition to desegregation, have tended to consider the needs and desires of the white community alone, sometimes assuming that minority parents will welcome desegregation on almost any terms. The way in which school officials, civic leaders, and the news media respond to disruptive incidents can serve either to preserve an atmosphere of calm or heighten tension even more. There is a sharp contrast between the reaction of communities to their own experience in desegregation and their expressed feelings concerning desegregation as a general proposition. Finally, the effects of the controversy at the national level concerning busing and school desegregation have been felt in a number of communities visited by Commission staff. (Author/JM).

But behav ioral influence has not been limited to mental health. There has been considerable impact in education, industry, government, and general health care. Although behavior modification has made a significant impact on psychology in general, there has been a noticeable lack of theorizing and empirical research on issues primarily related to black populations. In fact, the black community in general, and black psychologists in partic ular, often have viewed behavioral approaches with suspicion. We hope that the material presented in this volume will serve to clarify what the behavioral approach is and what it is not and that it will help to foster an understanding of the behavioral approach. Moreover, empirical data demonstrating the effectiveness of behavioral procedures with black populations are presented.
