Book The Post High School Outcomes of Young Adults with Disabilities Up to 8 Years After High School

Download or read book The Post High School Outcomes of Young Adults with Disabilities Up to 8 Years After High School written by Lynn Newman and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) funded by the National Center for Special Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education, provides a unique source of information to help in developing an understanding of the experiences of secondary school students with disabilities nationally as they go through their early adult years. NLTS2 addresses questions about youth with disabilities in transition by providing information over a 10-year period about a nationally representative sample of secondary school students with disabilities who were 13 to 16 years old and receiving special education services in grade 7 or above, under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the 2000-01 school year. NLTS2 findings generalize to youth with disabilities nationally and to youth in each of the 12 federal special education disability categories in use for students in the NLTS2 age range. The study was designed to collect data on sample members from multiple sources in five waves, beginning in 2001 and ending in 2009. This document uses information about these former secondary school students to describe the experiences of young adults with disabilities in the postsecondary education, employment, independence, and social domains in their first 8 years out of high school. Much of the information reported in this document comes from young adults with disabilities themselves in the form of responses to either a telephone interview or a self-administered mail survey with a subset of key items from the telephone interview conducted in 2009, as part of NLTS2's fifth and final wave of data collection, referred to as Wave 5. This report is organized to provide information on young adults with disabilities in several key domains, including the following: (1) Postsecondary education enrollment, educational experiences, and completion; (2) Employment status and characteristics of young adults' current or most recent job; (3) Productive engagement in school, work, or preparation for work; (4) Residential independence; the prevalence of marriage and parenting; and aspects of their financial independence; and (5) Social and community involvement, including friendship activities and community participation in both positive and negative ways. Selected findings include: (1) Sixty percent of young adults with disabilities reported having continued on to postsecondary education within 8 years of leaving high school. (2) Ninety-one percent of young adults with disabilities reported having been employed at some time since leaving high school, holding an average of four jobs. (3) Ninety-four percent of young adults with disabilities reported having been engaged in employment, postsecondary education, and/or job training during this post-high school period. (4) Fifty-nine percent of young adults with disabilities had lived independently (on their own or with a spouse, partner, or roommate), and 4 percent had lived semi-independently (primarily in a college dormitory or military housing). (5) The participation rate of young adults with disabilities in any one of three types of social and community involvement activities--lessons or classes outside of school, volunteer or community service activities, and organized school or community groups--was 52 percent, ranging from 20 percent to 39 percent of young adults across the three types of activities. Appended are: (1) NLTS2 Sampling, Data Collection, and Analysis Procedures; and (2) Additional Analysis. (Contains 98 tables, 44 figures and 126 footnotes.) Download or read book A Follow up Study of Students with Disabilities who Exited an Urban Public High School from 1997 2004 written by Mary L. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow-up data was collected on 44 former students of the Marshall Metropolitan High School in Chicago, Illinois. Information regarding the former students' status and experiences in the areas of employment, daily living, social network, personal satisfaction, and use of services and supports was gathered. This study was the first post-school follow-up investigation of former students who received special education services at a large urban high school serving a predominately minority and low socioeconomic population. This study also investigated the perceptions of teachers at Marshall Metropolitan High School regarding findings from the follow-up investigation, particularly in terms of what teachers believe should be retained and changed in the current system of services to youth with disabilities. Findings from this investigation were considered in relation to prior literature related to the school to adult life transition of youth with disabilities. Possible explanations for various findings were explored and critiqued. Additionally, recommendations were made for educators and policymakers responsible for the secondary and postsecondary education of youth with disabilities as well as for future research.

Book A Comparative Post secondary Follow up Study of Students Served Through General Education and Through Special Education

Download or read book A Comparative Post secondary Follow up Study of Students Served Through General Education and Through Special Education written by Kendra Lea Williams Diehm and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the preparation during high school and post-secondary outcomes of students with disabilities. High school preparation consists of activities in which students participated during high school. Post-secondary outcomes relate to the current status of students following high school graduation in relation to the four major outcomes areas: (a) post-secondary education, (b) employment, (c) independent living, and (d) recreation and leisure. The target population included all students graduating from one school district in a mid-sized city in Texas. A stratified random sample of 228 students both with and without disabilities was selected. Post-secondary follow-up surveys, consisting of one survey administered prior to graduation and one survey administered six-months following graduation, were given to the participants. The response rate for the initial exit survey was 82.9% while the response rate for a post-school survey was 61.4%. Differences between groups were analyzed using loglinear analyses based upon educational setting, disability category, gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. In addition, a sub-study was completed to determine the level of agreement among students and teachers on a post-secondary readiness skill inventory. The findings indicated that differences among groups did exist in terms of both high school preparation and post-secondary outcomes. In terms of high school preparation, the participation among various groups produced few results that were significantly different. Statistically significant results occurred only with respect to extracurricular activity participation by educational setting and socio-economic status. Post-secondary outcome results produced more statistically significant findings than high school preparation. The variable of educational setting produced statistically significant post-secondary outcomes in the three areas of employment, post-secondary education, and recreation and leisure. Ethnicity was the next largest determinant to influence post-secondary outcomes, and statistically significant results were found for both post-secondary education and independent living. Socio-economic status produced statistically significant results for employment outcomes. The variable of gender produced no results that reached statistical significance. The last findings provided an analysis of the agreement between students and teachers in terms of a post-secondary readiness skill inventory. Overall students and teachers demonstrated a high level of congruency in which similar responses were indicated within 95% of the items.

Book Corporal Punishment in U S Public Schools

Download or read book Corporal Punishment in U S Public Schools written by Elizabeth T. Gershoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief reviews the past, present, and future use of school corporal punishment in the United States, a practice that remains legal in 19 states as it is constitutionally permitted according to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result of school corporal punishment, nearly 200,000 children are paddled in schools each year. Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. It concludes by discussing potential legal, policy, and advocacy avenues for abolition of school corporal punishment at the state and federal levels as well as summarizing how school corporal punishment is being used and what its potential implications are for thousands of individual students and for the society at large. As school corporal punishment becomes more and more regulated at the state level, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools serves an essential guide for policymakers and advocates across the country as well as for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students.
