Download or read book A Follow up of the Graduates of Agricultural Education at Oregon State University written by John Marshall Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural education at the high school level, like all vocational programs, is expanding vertically as well as horizontally. With this increased emphasis placed on vocational agriculture, the shortage of teachers is already being felt and the situation will, in all probability, become more critical. The expansion of the programs to include off-farm agricultural businesses is placing additional pressures on the men in the field who received their training a number of years ago. The primary purpose of this study is to determine to what extent the men who majored in Agricultural Education, Oregon State University, have been placed in teaching and to gather information which will be of value to the Agricultural Education Department in order that continuing evaluation studies can be made. Information dealing with retention of teacher were given particular attention. The graduates of the period January 1950 through June 1964 were divided into two separate groups. The men who had remained in the teaching profession were designated as group 1; the men who left the profession were placed in group 2. Two separate questionnaires were used. The first page of both questionnaires and was designed to gather information common to both groups. The second page was designed to gather information according to the group the individual graduate was placed in. There were two mailings of questionnaires used in the study. The first mailing was sent in April 1962 to the graduates of the period January 1950 through June 1959. In January 1966 questionnaires were again circulated. This mailing included all the respondents of the first mailing who were still teaching vocational agriculture. It also included those graduates of the period January 1960 through June 1964. The findings of the study were: 1. Most (81.2 percent) graduates of the Agricultural Education, Oregon State University do enter teaching vocational agriculture the first year. 2. Oregon's drop-out rate after the first year of teaching is well below the national average. 3. The greater the age of the graduate upon entry, the less likely he is to stay with vocational agriculture. 4. Opportunity seems to be the most important factor in a graduate's making the final decision to stay with teaching vocational agriculture or to use it as a stepping stone to another occupation. 5. There appears to be some indication that the entry school plays a part in causing a graduate to remain in the profession longer or to drop out. 6. The median length of service at the entry school was found to be 3.82 years. 7. The mean number of years of service was found to be 5.25 and the median to be 4.5 years. 8. The most significant fact revealed by the rankings of those leaving the profession was the monetary gain was more important to them than service. This in an opposite viewpoint from those remaining in the profession. 9. The largest group of graduates who leave the profession stay in the field of education either as classroom teachers of other subject matter areas or as administrators.

Book A Follow up of High School Graduates in Hood River County

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attention focused on vocational education in the past year has brought about renewed interest to make vocational training a truly meaningful part of a community's educational program. The first step in preparation for the improvement and expansion of vocational programs is the need of evaluating our existing programs. The purpose of this study is to provide both a basis for evaluation and criteria for future planning of the agricultural education program in Hood River County. A total of 303 male graduates from two Hood River County High Schools during a ten year period was selected for a mailed questionnaire interview. The graduates consisted of all 165 graduates with two years or more of Vocational Agriculture at Wy'east High School. In addition, 138 randomly selected graduates were included from both high schools who did not have Vocational Agriculture. Comparisons of the agricultural graduates against the non-agricultural graduates are made from the information received. The data sought was: occupational information on types of employment, income, location of employment, and job satisfaction. In addition, the type and amount of post high school training, and the value of high school courses was analyzed. Conclusions based on the findings of the study were: 1. The present program of Vocational Agriculture at Wy'east High School is serving 80 percent of the county's graduates who enter an agricultural occupation. Fifty-five percent of the Wy'east agricultural graduates are employed in the field of agriculture. 2. Over 31 percent of the male graduates of Hood River County have not entered any civilian form of post high school education. 3. Nearly 18 percent of all Hood River County male graduates enter the occupational fields of forestry and lumbering. Almost one fourth of the Vocational Agricultural graduates are so employed. 4. Vocational Agriculture is meaningful to agricultural graduates in non-agricultural occupations. Almost one fourth of the agricultural graduates attested to this.

Book A Follow up Study of Crater High School Graduates

Download or read book A Follow up Study of Crater High School Graduates written by Robert Harrison Elden and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in educational programs should be implemented only after a careful evaluation of the product. Information about the product in education is often not available to planners of vocational education programs. A follow-up study of former students is a means by which information about graduates may be collected and used as a basis for making curriculum changes. The purpose of this study was to determine if the present program of vocational agriculture is meeting the occupational needs of Crater High School students. A total of 121 former male students from Crater High School, covering a three year period from 1965 through 1967, were selected to participate in a follow-up study through a mailed questionnaire interview. Seventy-six former students with two or more years of agricultural training were compared with a group of 45 students without agricultural training. The specific criteria on which the comparisons between the two groups are based were: occupational status, post high school training, job satisfaction, value of high school training, income, and the number of jobs held. Also being analyzed were persons influencing graduates occupational choice, value of additional vocational training, and the location of employment. The following conclusions are based on the findings of the study. 1. Agricultural students do become employed in agricultural occupations with most of them entering business and lumbering occupations in agriculture, while over one-half of the comparison group entered the agricultural occupations of lumbering. 2. The current program of vocational agriculture at Crater High School is serving 75 percent of the students entering agricultural occupations. 3. Less than 42 percent of the male Crater High School former students have obtained some type of civilian post high school education. 4. Students trained in agriculture are more satisfied with their jobs than students with no specific vocational training. 5. Vocational agriculture is a meaningful program for students planning to enter agricultural occupations. 6. Study results indicate that counselors are not actively influential in directing patterns of occupational choice for students. 7. Former students of Crater High School feel that additional vocational training would be helpful to them in their jobs. 8. Agricultural graduates of Crater High School do remain in Jackson County for employment.
