Book Study of the Reaction of Atomic Oxygen with Aerosols

Download or read book Study of the Reaction of Atomic Oxygen with Aerosols written by Francis I. Akers and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of disappearance of atomic oxygen was measured at several pressures in a fast flow pyrex reactor system with its walls treated with (NH4)2SO4 (s), H2SO4 (l), and NH4CL (s). Atomic oxygen, P-3 was generated by dissociation of pure, low pressure oxygen in a microwave discharge. Concentrations of atomic oxygen were measured at several stations in the reactor system using chemiluminescent titration with NO2. Recombination efficiencies calculated from experimentally determined wall recombination rate constants are in good agreement with reported values for clean Pyrex and an H2SO4 coated wall. The recombination efficiency for (NH4)2SO4, results in a slightly lower value than for H2S04. A rapid exothermic reaction between atomic oxygen and the NH4Cl wall coating prevented recombination efficiency determination for this coating. The results show that the technique is highly useful for wall recombination measurements and as a means of extrapolating to the case of free stream aerosol-gas interactions.

Book Chemical Kinetics of Some Elementary Reactions of Oxygen Atoms

Download or read book Chemical Kinetics of Some Elementary Reactions of Oxygen Atoms written by Richard B. Timmons and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research studies involved the investigation of the kinetics and mechanism of selected gas phase reactions of ground state oxygen atoms. All of the reactions studied are of either direct or indirect interest with respect to oxidative processes which occur in the atmosphere. Each reaction was studied over wide temperature ranges using fast flow apparatus coupled with electron spin resonance and/or mass spectrometric detection methods. In some cases, (with CH3CN and CF3CN) it was necessary to use the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence method in order to avoid the problem of free radial chain reactions observed under typical flow tube conditions. The specific rate constants obtained are expressed in terms of the usual Arrhenius equation. The specific applications of these results to environmental chemistry are discussed in this report.

Book Chemical Compounds in The Atmosphere

Download or read book Chemical Compounds in The Atmosphere written by T Graedel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Compounds in the Atmosphere deals with the chemistry of organic and inorganic compounds found in the atmosphere, including rare gases and compounds of oxygen and hydrogen, halogenated aromatic compounds, and organometallic compounds. The sources and concentrations of atmospheric trace gases are discussed, along with their chemical reactions and ultimate fates. The compounds are divided into groups on the basis of chemical constituent or chemical structure. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book opens with an overview of atmospheric composition and atmospheric chemistry, followed by a discussion on inorganic compounds present in the troposphere such as rare gases and compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur, and halogens. The next chapters focus on hydrocarbons such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes; carbonyl compounds such as ketones and aldehydes; oxygenated and nitrogen- and sulfur-containing organic compounds; organic halogenated compounds such as mercaptans and thiocyanates; and organometallic compounds such as organophosphorus pesticides. The final chapter is a synthesis of data on atmospheric compounds mentioned in this text, with emphasis on their occurrence, sources, oxidation, and lifetimes. The chemistry of acid rain is also considered. This monograph will be of value to those engaged in atmospheric measurements, theoretical and laboratory studies of chemical parameters relevant to the atmosphere, and air quality assessments.
