This book was released on 2003 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcases the vibrant ecosystems sustained by South Carolina's waterways; Sure to foster a greater appreciation for South Carolina's waterways as well as a desire to conserve them for future generations, The South Carolina Aquarium Guide to Aquatic Habitats of South Carolina introduces readers, hikers, boaters, reachers, and students to the remarkable beauty and complexity of the state's wetlands. With almost a quarter of its acreage covered by water, South Carolina is a small state distinguished by biological diversity and an extensive range of habitats. This guide, written in an engaging and easy-to-read style by two experienced naturalists, tells the story of water's inexorable movement from mountains to coast, and of the abundant plant and animal species that benefit from its many stops, starts, and backtrackings along the way. Underscoring the fact that the state's streams, rivers, lakes, swamps, marshes and estuaries form a single, interrelated system, Pete Laurie and David Chamberlain explore the particular wetland habitats in each of South Carolina's five physiographic regions. They describe habitats as varied as waterfalls, blackwater swamps, and tidal creeks and as distin

This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 1246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated manual describes and discusses the unusually rich and varied flora of the Carolinas, from the semi-tropical coast of South Carolina to the northern forests of the high North Carolina mountains. The manual treats in detail and in a concise format more than 3, 200 species of trees, shrubs, vines, herbs and ferns that grow without cultivation in this two-state area. Special features include diagnostic illustrations, keys for identification, detailed descriptions, flowering and fruiting dates, habitat data, distribution data, and pertinent synonymy for each species. County dot maps show the distribution of each species if found in more than five counties throughout the two-state area, and general ranges beyond our borders are given in the text. First published in 1968, Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas is an established reference for professionals, students, and plant enthusiasts throughout the Southeastern United States. It is based on the collection and examination of more than 200,000 live specimens. Many of these specimens are now housed in the herbarium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Book A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina

Download or read book A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina written by Patrick D. McMillan and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and indispensable reference for identifying and appreciating native flora From its summits to its shores, South Carolina brims with life and unparalleled beauty thanks to its abundant array of native and naturalized flora, all carefully documented in this revised and expanded edition of A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina. Dramatic advances in plant taxonomy and ecology have occurred since the guide's publication 20 years ago; new species have been discovered while others struggle to survive in the face of vanishing habitats and climate change. The authors, all experienced botanists, offer essays on carnivorous plants, native orchids, Carolina bays, the roles and effects of fire and agriculture on the landscape, and detailed descriptions of the plant communities throughout the state's major natural regions. This expanded edition catalogs nearly 1,000 species organized by habitat, with descriptions, color photographs, range maps, and comments on pharmacological uses, suitability for garden cultivation, origin of common and scientific names, and conservation status.

Book excerpt: Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve ("Buxton Woods") is a Significant Natural Heritage Area (R1 C1) located on Hatteras Island, Dare County, North Carolina. The site is one of ten reserves within the North Carolina Coastal Reserve system. Comprising ca. 403 ha, the site spans about a third of the largest remaining continguous tract of Maritime Evergreen Forest (Mid-Atlantic Subtype) on the Atlantic coast and contains the only occurrence of the Maritime Shrub Swamp (Dogwood Subtype) natural community in the world. Buxton Woods is home to six plant communities and numerous rare plant species. The Guide to the Vascular Flora of Buxton Woods is based on the first author's collections, historical collections, and reports of species from the site. The illustrated guide treats 476 species in 98 families, providing keys to all vouchered or reported species and genera. Habitat, nativity status, flowering and fruiting phenology, and abundance are also incorporated, as well as relevant voucher information. The guide contains 30 color plates and nearly 400 line drawings. This is the fourth volume in a series from the Illustrated Floras of North Carolina Project (North Carolina State University Vascular Plant Herbarium and Botanical Research Institute of Texas Press), designed to be useful to both botanical specialists and a more general audience.
