Book excerpt: A floristic inventory within southeastern Colorado and southwestern Kansas was completed during the field seasons of 2007 and 2008. This area included the Cimarron National Grassland and Comanche National Grassland as well as adjacent private land. The study area is 1,926 square miles, spread over Baca, Otero, and Las Animas counties in Colorado and Morton County in Kansas. Elevation ranges from 3,200 to 6,444 feet. This survey is based on 9,281 collections representing 633 unique taxa. Exotic taxa comprised 16.5% of the flora (107 taxa) of which 16 are listed as noxious weeds. A total of 24 rare taxa were documented. In addition, two state records were added to the flora of Colorado, Astrolepis integerrima (Hook.) D.M. Benham & Windham and Digitaria pubiflora (Vasey) Wipff. Cyperus retroflexus Buckley, collected on the Cimarron National Grasslands, is an addition to the flora of Kansas. This thesis discusses methodology, boundaries of study area, climate, geology, soils, vegetation types, and a floristic comparison using Sørenson's coefficient of similarity. The annotated checklist of vascular plant taxa collected during the study comprises the primary contribution.

Book excerpt: A vascular plant inventory was conducted of the Uncompahgre, Lower Gunnison, and Plateau Creek drainages of west-central Colorado during the field seasons of 2010-2012. The study covered an area of 4,335 sq mi (11,228 sq km) and comprised all or part of Delta, Gunnison, Mesa, Montrose, and Ouray counties. Significant physiographic features of the area included Grand Mesa, Dominquez and Escalante Canyons, Gunnison Gorge, the Uncompahgre Plateau and the northernmost San Juan Mountains. Lying within the Southern Rocky Mountain and Northern Canyonlands physiogeographic regions, elevation in the study area ranges from 4,616 ft (1,407 m) along Plateau Creek to the 14,150 ft (4,312 m) summit of Mount Sneffels. A total of 12,398 collections were made at 314 sites within the study area. This resulted in 1,267 unique taxa from 93 families in 444 genera. Populations of two federally listed taxa were also observed, bringing the number of taxa to 1,269. Sixty-seven taxa of conservation concern were documented, included a West Slope record of Carex livida, known from only 3 other counties in Colorado. Just over nine percent of the taxa were non-native, including a state record of Agropyron (Eremopyrum) bonaepartis, previously known only from Arizona. A herbaria search resulted in the addition of 303 taxa to the annotated checklist, bringing the number of families documented in the area to 101, with 1,572 taxa in 508 genera. Biotic and abiotic elements of the study area are described, along with an analysis of sampling adequacy for the project. Voucher specimens from this study are deposited at the Rocky Mountain Herbarium with duplicates to be distributed to regional herbaria.
