Book A Flood tidal Delta Complex the Holocene Pleistocene Boundary and Seismic Stratigraphy in the Quaternary Section Off the Southern Assateague Island Coast Virginia USA

Download or read book A Flood tidal Delta Complex the Holocene Pleistocene Boundary and Seismic Stratigraphy in the Quaternary Section Off the Southern Assateague Island Coast Virginia USA written by Christopher A. Maike and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic inner-shelf off the coast of Assateague Island preserves a complex stratigraphy in the Quaternary Section. Holocene highstands have been transgressing the island, yielding the current state. Seismic Reflection data off the Assateague Island coast reveal flood-tidal delta facies, tidal inlet channels, tidal creeks, and Holocene sand sheets. These facies indicate a former back-barrier environment off the Assateague Island coast, revealing a former offshore position of Assateague Island. The defining characteristic of the back-barrier environment is a flood-tidal delta complex approximately 4.5 km by 3.5 km. An isopach map of the flood-tidal delta reveals a ramp and facies thinning away from the ramp. Two main reflections are interpreted to be shoreface ravinements in the study area, which are time-transgressive subaqueous erosional surfaces produced during the landward movement of the transgressive systems tract. A third reflection is interpreted to be the pre-transgressive surface, marking the Holocene/Pleistocene Boundary. The depth of the pre-transgressive surface was interpreted throughout the entire study area. It resulted in a clean surface with a channel-like depression near seismic line 18. This depression is interpreted as being part of a lowstand drainage system.

Book Morphodynamics and Stratigraphy of Essex River Ebb tidal Delta Massachusetts

Download or read book Morphodynamics and Stratigraphy of Essex River Ebb tidal Delta Massachusetts written by J. Bailey Smith and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essex River Inlet ebb-tidal delta system is a well-formed delta along a barrier island chain in the Merrimack Embayment. Sediments comprising this barrier island chain have been supplied primarily from reworking and onshore transport of the Early Holocene Merrimack River Delta. Southerly longshore currents have resulted in a fining grain-size trend to the south along the barrier chain as well as an increase in spacing of the offshore contours. The Essex River Inlet is anchored next to bedrock, and its ebb-tidal delta exhibits classic delta morphology whose environments respond to storms, tidal currents, wave processes, and sand transport. Distal portions of the delta including swash bars and terminal lobe are dominated by southerly and landward directed wave-generated currents. Wave refraction around the delta results in transport reversal approximately 1.2 km south of the main ebb channel. Intertidal sand bodies are dominated by landward-oriented currents with the exception of the distal channel margin linear bars. Sediment transport trends are dominated by gyres that involve sediment input from longshore currents into the updrift marginal flood channel, seaward sandwave migration through the main ebb channel, and onshore reworking of sediment through wave activity and swash bar migration.

Book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

Download or read book Habitats and Biota of the Gulf of Mexico Before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill written by C. Herb Ward and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 1 covers: water and sediment quality and contaminants in the Gulf; natural oil and gas seeps in the Gulf of Mexico; coastal habitats, including flora and fauna and coastal geology; offshore benthos and plankton, with an analysis of current knowledge on energy capture and energy flows in the Gulf; and shellfish and finfish resources that provide the basis for commercial and recreational fisheries.

Book Shallow Stratigraphy of the Skagit River Delta Washington Derived from Sediment Cores

Download or read book Shallow Stratigraphy of the Skagit River Delta Washington Derived from Sediment Cores written by U.S. Department of the Interior and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sedimentologic analyses of 21 sediment cores, ranging from 0.4 to 9.6 m in length, reveal that the shallow geologic framework of the Skagit River Delta, western Washington, United States, has changed significantly since 1850. The cores collected from elevations of 3.94 to -2.41 m (relative to mean lower low water) along four cross-shore transects between the emergent marsh and delta front show relatively similar environmental changes across an area spanning ~75 km2. Offshore of the present North Fork Skagit River and South Fork Skagit River mouths where river discharge is focused by diked channels through the delta, the entire 5–7-km-wide tidal flats are covered with 1–2 m of cross-bedded medium-to-coarse sands.
