Book excerpt: 'Utterly engaging.' - Sunday Times From her first life-changing solo trip to Australia as a young graduate, Rosita Boland was enthralled by travel. In the last thirty years she has visited some of the most remote parts of the globe carrying little more than a battered rucksack and a diary. Documenting nine journeys from nine different moments in her life, Elsewhere reveals how exploring the world – and those we meet along the way – can dramatically shape the course of a person’s life. From death-defying bus journeys through Pakistan to witnessing the majestic icescapes of Antarctica to putting herself back together in Bali, Rosita experiences moments of profound joy and endures deep personal loss. In a series of jaw-dropping, illuminating and sometimes heart-breaking essays, Elsewhere is a book that celebrates the life well-travelled in all its messy and wondrous glory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PICTURE JOURNEY OVER 12,000 MILES OF AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND ROUTES THROUGH JUNGLE, DESERT AND ARCTIC First published in 1944, this is the first part of a stunning book that provides an in-depth look at the far-flung operations of the Air Transport Command and Army Air Forces, and provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of America’s heroic air accomplishments. Richly illustrated throughout with photographs and sketches by Ivan Dmitri. A renowned U.S. artist and colour photography pioneer, Dmitri produced the first ever color photograph gracing the cover of the Saturday Evening Post’s edition dated May 29, 1937, and his second cover in 1944, depicting his photo of General ‘Hap’ Arnold with B-17’s flying overhead, proved so popular that the United States used the photo image to print a very rare World War II war effort poster.

Book Flight Deck Part 1

Download or read book Flight Deck Part 1 written by Edward Atkins and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 2 Available here: http://bookstore.abbottpress.com/Products/SKU-000523607/Flight-Deck-Part-2.aspx This absolutely unique book contains 355 superb full-size photographs (Part 1 has 204 and Part 2 has 151) which document life on the flight deck of a fleet WWII aircraft carrier where the Airdale (flight deck crewman) goes in harms way each and every day, such as during aircraft launch operations (among the slashing 13-foot diameter propellers powered by 2,000-hp engines), during aircraft landings (putting out conflagrations from possible aircraft crashes) and during the parking of aircraft (when standing but a few feet from a possible hail of shrapnel). Then one should not omit the devastation of possible Kamikaze (suicide) assaults from above. Each of the 355 photo(s) has a fulsome caption, in the first-person, describing in detail, both subjectively and objectively, the contents of the picture. Many, many of the photos are deserving of being shown in their own frames of wood or displayed on large TV screens (the naval photographer mates who took these pictures are indeed outstanding craftmen). Finally, this book (Parts 1 & 2) is quite literally one of a kind for ALL time (being the first, and the last, one EVER written about this subject (in the 1st person).

Book Human Performance on the Flight Deck

Download or read book Human Performance on the Flight Deck written by Don Harris and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an integrated, systems approach to dealing exclusively with the human performance issues encountered on the flight deck of the modern airliner, this book describes the inter-relationships between the various application areas of human factors, recognising that the human contribution to the operation of an airliner does not fall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areas such as pilot selection, training, flight deck design and safety management is continually emphasised within the book. It also affirms the upside of human factors in aviation - the positive contribution that it can make to the industry - and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human component fails. The book is divided into four main parts. Part one describes the underpinning science base, with chapters on human information processing, workload, situation awareness, decision making, error and individual differences. Part two of the book looks at the human in the system, containing chapters on pilot selection, simulation and training, stress, fatigue and alcohol, and environmental stressors. Part three takes a closer look at the machine (the aircraft), beginning with an examination of flight deck display design, followed by chapters on aircraft control, flight deck automation, and HCI on the flight deck. Part four completes the volume with a consideration of safety management issues, both on the flight deck and across the airline; the final chapter in this section looks at human factors for incident and accident investigation. The book is written for professionals within the aviation industry, both on the flight deck and elsewhere, for post-graduate students and for researchers working in the area.

Book Fight or Flight

  • Author : Martin Thomas
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

Book excerpt: Although shattered by war, in 1945 Britain and France still controlled the world's two largest colonial empires, with imperial territories stretched over four continents. And they appeared determined to keep them: the roll-call of British and French politicians, soldiers, settlers and writers who promised in word and print at this time to defend their colonial possessions at all costs is a long one. Yet, within twenty years both empires had almost completely disappeared. The collapse was cataclysmic. Peaceable 'transfers of power' were eclipsed by episodes of territorial partition and mass violence whose bitter aftermath still lingers. Hundreds of millions across four continents were caught up in the biggest reconfiguration of the international system ever seen. In the meantime, even the most dogged imperialists, who had once stiffly defended imperial rule, ultimately bent to the wind of change. By the early 1950s Winston Churchill had retreated from his wartime pledge to keep Britain's Empire intact. And General de Gaulle, who quit the French presidency in 1946 complaining that France's new post-war democracy would never hang on to the country's imperial prizes, narrowly escaped assassination a generation later - after negotiating the humiliating French withdrawal from Algeria. Fight or Flight is the first ever comparative account of this dramatic collapse, explaining the end of the British and French colonial empires as an intertwined, even co-dependent process. Decolonization gathered momentum, not as an empire-specific affair, but as a global one, in which the wider march of twentieth-century history played a vital part: industrial concentration and global depression, World War and Cold War, Communism and other anti-colonial ideologies, mass consumerism and the allure of American popular culture. Above all, as Martin Thomas shows, the internationalization of colonial affairs made it impossible to contain colonial problems locally, spelling the end for Europe's two largest colonial empires in less than two decades from the end of the Second World War.
