Book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Longitudinal Control Characteristics

Download or read book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Longitudinal Control Characteristics written by Robert A. Berg and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of STOL transport terminal area characteristics was conducted in order to identify factors that may be significant in the establishment of longitudinal handling qualities criteria. The investigation was broad in scope, covering a wide range of longitudinal characteristics representative of STOL aircraft and STOL operating conditions. The use of a three-axis STOL flight director, a pitch stability argumentation system, and a direct-lift control device were also examined. Results of the study indicate that acceptable levels of certain longitudinal characteristics are functions of the piloting technique used for flight-path and speed control, and although pilots tend to adapt well to a wide variety of configurations, they still have definite control preferences based on their flight experience. Book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Directional Control Characteristics

Download or read book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Directional Control Characteristics written by Robert A. Berg and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic investigation was conducted of STOL transport terminal area directional control characteristics to identify the significant considerations and to establish appropriate directional control criteria. The investigation consisted of an analysis of existing data and a moving-base flight simulator program using the NASA Ames Research Center S-16 Moving Cab Transport Simulator. The simulator test program covered a broad range of lateral and directional aerodynamic characteristics representative of typical STOL transport aircraft. This effort is the second phase of an extensive STOL simulation program, the first phase of which was devoted to the investigation of lateral control characteristics. The present study revealed the existence of an appreciable interaction between the roll and the heading control tasks which suggests that roll-mode damping requirements should be specified in terms of the heading delay characteristics. Lateral control sensitivity tests were conducted which corroborated the results of the first phase of the program. (Author).

Book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane

Download or read book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane written by G. Kimball Miller and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base visual simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the use of decoupled controls as a means for reducing pilot workload during approach and landing of an externally blown jet-flap short take-off and landing (STOL) transport. All six rigid-body degrees of freedom were employed with the aerodynamic characteristics based on wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was to use a flight director to capture and maintain a two-segment glide slope, with a closed-circuit television display of a STOL airport used during simulations of the flare and landing. The decoupled longitudinal controls used constant prefilter and feedback gains to provide steady-state decoupling of flight-path angle, pitch angle, and forward velocity. The pilots were enthusiastic about the decoupled longitudinal controls but believed the decoupled concept offered no significant advantage over conventional controls in the lateral mode.

Book Simulator Study of Minimum Acceptable Level of Longitudinal Stability for a Representative STOL Configuration During Landing Approach

Download or read book Simulator Study of Minimum Acceptable Level of Longitudinal Stability for a Representative STOL Configuration During Landing Approach written by William D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to determine the minimum acceptable level of longitudinal stability for a representative turbofan STOL (short take-off and landing) transport airplane during the landing approach. Real-time digital simulation techniques were used. The computer was programed with equations of motion for six degrees of freedom, and the aerodynamic inputs were based on measured wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was an instrument approach to a breakout at a 60-m (200-ft) ceiling.

Book A STOL Airworthiness Investigation Using a Simulation of an Augmentor Wing Transport Volume 1 Summary of Results and Airworthiness Implications

Download or read book A STOL Airworthiness Investigation Using a Simulation of an Augmentor Wing Transport Volume 1 Summary of Results and Airworthiness Implications written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simulator study of STOL airworthiness criteria was conducted using a model of an augmentor wing transport. This study covered the approach, flare and landing, go-around, and takeoff phases of flight. The two volumes of this report document the results of that investigation. Volume One summarizes the results and discusses possible implications with regard to airworthiness criteria. The results provide a data base for future STOL airworthiness requirements and a preliminary indication of potential problem areas. The results are also compared to the results from an earlier simulation of the Breguet 941S. Where possible, airworthiness criteria are proposed for consideration.

Book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities

Download or read book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities written by James A. Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents materials that constituted the lectures presented by the author as part of Course AA 234 Dynamics, Control, and Flying Qualities of V/STOL Aircraft that was taught in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. It covers representative operations of vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, a discussion of the pilot's strategy in controlling these aircraft, the equations of motion pertinent to V/STOL tasks, and their application in the analysis of longitudinal and lateral-directional control in hover and forward flight. Following that development, which applies to the characteristics of the basic airframe and propulsion system, the text concludes with a discussion of the contributions of control augmentation in specific flight tasks and of the integration of modern electronic displays with these controls.

Book Criteria for Low Speed Longitudinal Handling Qualities

Download or read book Criteria for Low Speed Longitudinal Handling Qualities written by H.A. Mooij and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-fl ight simulation experiments performed in 1967 with a variable-stabil ity aircraft during the author's stay at Princeton University, motivated the study of handl ing characteristics of future transport aircraft with closed-loop fl ight control systems. In 1972, the first experiment took place at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, using one of its research aircraft. In anticipation of expected developments in (digital) fl ight control technology, the research programme following the first experiments was aimed at the establ ishment of quantitative handl ing qual ities criteria. An appreciable part of that programme has been sponsored by the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programs (Nederlands Instituut voor VI iegtuigontwikkel ing en Ruimtevaart) and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Netherlands (Rijksluchtvaartdienst). In 1981, a thorough review of the extensive and valuable data gathered was started. The result, presented in this book, was also included in the author's thesis for a Ph.D. degree of the Delft University of Technology. To introduce the reader to the multi-discipl inary field of handl ing qual ities research, introductory chapters are presented on longitudinal aircraft dynamics, closed-loop fl ight control systems using non-mechanical signal transmission, human pilot dynamics, hand I ing qual ities assessment techniques, and the present status of handl ing qual ity criteria.
