Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hebrew University Professor Emeritus and Israel Prize recipient Eliezer Schweid (1929-2022) is widely regarded as one of the greatest historians of Jewish thought of our era. In Siddur Hatefillah, he probes the Jewish prayer book as a reflection of Judaism's unity and continuity as a unique spiritual entity; and as the most popular, most uttered, and internalized text of the Jewish people. Schweid explores texts which process religious philosophical teaching into the language of prayer, and/or express philosophical ideas in prayer’s special language – which the worshipper reflects upon in order to direct prayer, and through which flows hoped-for feedback. With the addition of historical, philological, and literary contexts, the study provides the reader with first-time access to the comprehensive meaning of Jewish prayer—filling a vacuum in both the experience and scholarship of Jewish worship.

This Erev Shabbat siddur, used in whole or part, can guide you through a meaningful celebration of YHVH's holy day each Friday evening before dinner. Our Family Shabbat Siddur is interactive and involves the whole family in reciting Scripture, singing songs, and discussing YHVH's goodness. This booklet is 38 pages and includes for your reference a section with all the Scriptures about the weekly Sabbath, a guest log to record those who have celebrated the Shabbat in your home, and a notes section. The whole siddur takes about 15 minutes, dependent on the length of conversations, number of table songs chosen, etc. Welcome every Shabbat with intentionality, joy, and gratitude! This Shabbat comes as a paperback copy. For a digital download (to print as many copies as you like), visit the Etsy shop: https: //etsy.me/3juyfSt From the Author Shabbat is such a special time each week, a time for the family to gather together and be reminded of how YHVH has blessed us with provisions- and with each other. When my husband and I first began keeping Shabbat and welcoming it with a short and sweet Erev Shabbat, we immediately felt the beneficial effects in our home, as we still do today; through our respective roles in bringing in the Shabbat, and through the Scriptural blessings said over one another, we are encouraged in our part in God's design of the family. All week, I hear the blessing for the wife going through my mind, encouraging and convicting me to continue on in good faith. Over the years, our Erev Shabbat has adapted and changed. With children, we added the blessing for children. When I realized that even my toddlers were memorizing Scriptures about the Sabbath because we were saying them weekly, I was motivated to include more Scripture! As they grew older, I wanted to be intentional about teaching them and added explanations. Although I have taken inspiration from the Jewish Erev Shabbat, I have used the liberty we have when creating family traditions to write my own Scriptural compilations, blessings, and explanations. My prayer is that this Shabbat siddur, whether used in whole or in part, will be a blessing to the tradition of your family, cultivate a sense of family togetherness, and point you toward faith in Messiah and obedience to the Word. Shalom!

When tragedy strikes we need to know: What still makes sense. What paths lead to healing. How to deal with the timeless questions. When Rabbi Richard Agler's twenty-six-year-old daughter Talia was struck and killed by a motor vehicle, his understanding of tragedy failed him. This book is an account of a journey, one he had no choice but to take, leading from unimaginable grief to (at least partial) recovery. In clear and compelling language, with references to both ancient and modern sources of wisdom, Rabbi Agler offers insight for everyone who has, or who one day might, experience painful loss. The Tragedy Test may give you enhanced clarity on some of humanity's most profound questions. It may lead you to reimagine the nature of our universe. It may fundamentally challenge your understanding of the God you thought you knew. It will not leave you unmoved or unchanged.

Book Gender Families and Transmission in the Contemporary Jewish Context

Download or read book Gender Families and Transmission in the Contemporary Jewish Context written by Martine Gross and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together social science researchers from France, Israel, the United States, Belgium and Switzerland, this book analyses contemporary Jewishness within the constant dialectic between faithfulness to Jewish tradition and culture and adherence to the values of modernity and democracy. Systems of family and gender normativity have durably influenced the traditional Jewish universe, but the norms and the institutions that embody them are today shaky. Individualization – the essence of modernity – is at work in the Jewish world, as it is elsewhere, and new identities are emerging and question the transmission of Jewish identities and traditions. The contributions here highlight the contrasting experiences of societies in the Diaspora and in Israeli society – societies that are different, yet sometimes very close because of tensions around religious and identity boundaries. As such, this book revisits the relationship to the “other” and the conditions for an “alliance” among people, a notion dear to Judaism.
