Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of English Literature This little book is not a mere abridgment of any History or Histories of the subject which the author has already written. He has endeavoured to utilise in it, not merely the experience thus gained, and the reading of more than half a century, but also the knowledge, of what is likely to be required by its possible users, furnished by practice long ago as a schoolmaster both in England and in Scotland, and more recently as a Professor of the matter and an Examiner in many different Universities. Book A Primer of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Abby Willis Howes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of English Literature This book aims at being what its title indicates -a primer, a first book. It strives to tell simply and clearly a few things, and to bring prominently before the reader only the greatest literary names. The author has found that young readers get very little from a book which presupposes wide knowledge on their part, or which deals with elabo rate literary criticism. Much reading is done in the schools, however, and it is necessary to give pupils some chronological idea of the growth of literature and the place of authors. It is the pur pose of this book to supply that chronology in form somewhat fuller than an outline, and yet less bulky than the regular histories. While it gives no new point of view or illuminating criticisms, it hopes to meet the need of all classes of students who wish to acquire in a straightforward way the gen erally accepted facts of English literary history. Book A First View of English and American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First View of English and American Literature Classic Reprint written by William Vaughn Moody and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First View of English and American Literature This volume is based upon the authors' more advanced History of English Literature. The aim has been to preserve those features of the previous book which have most commended themselves to high-school and academy teachers, to remove everything which they have found too detailed or too difficult for their students, and to add whatever was suggested by their friendly criticism as likely to increase the value of the book in class-room practice. The literary comment has been simplified, partly by omission, partly by the substitution of explicit statement in the place of what was before only suggested. The number of authors treated has been much reduced, and the attention of the student centred exclusively on a few great representative figures. More space has been given to biography and descriptive sketches, especially in the later periods. Each main epoch has been prefaced by a full historical introduction, and summarized in the form of a review-commentary and questions, together with tabular views. Suggestions concerning the best available texts, and the best biographical and critical aids to study, are given at the close of each chapter. A number of portraits are added, taken in each case from an authentic source. For purposes of fuller reference, some authors not treated in the text are included in the tabular views. Book First Steps in English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Steps in English Literature Classic Reprint written by Arthur Gilman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps in English Literature In laying out his work the author first discussed the general divisions of the subject, and found that but two needed to be indicated. These, in turn, fell naturally into four subdivisions each, and thus he had a plan of the simplest description, without resorting to any questionable system of nomencla ture, or attempting to mark out divisions where none actually exist. In casting about for names for the divisions thus indicated, the author found the work already done, and it was only necessary for him to adopt those that had stood the test of use, and were supported by the suffrages of schol ars who were acknowledged masters of the sub ject. Book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Walter Swain Hinchman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Sketch of English Literature This book is but a first sketch of what in English Writers it is the chief work of my life to tell as fully and as truly as I can. But no labour of this kind is intended to save any one the pains of reading good books for himself. It is useful only when it quickens the desire to come into real contact with great minds of the past, and gives the kind of knowledge that will lessen distance between us and them. Book History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Reuben Post Halleck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Literature In the following pages the author aims to furnish a concise and interesting text-book of the history and development of English literature from the earliest times to the present. Especial attention is paid to literary movements, to the essential qualities which differentiate one period from another, and to showing the animating spirit of each age. It is more important to understand the relation of the age of Pope to that of Wordsworth than to know these two writers merely as individuals. It is better for the student to catch the general drift of literary thought than to study a large number of comparatively unimportant authors and to ignore the law of the survival of the fittest. The majority of people never have time for the study of any but the masters. Such people need a guide to tell them what to select from each age, just as much as travelers in England require a guidebook to indicate the most interesting places. The writer has made no attempt to minimize the study of authors as individuals. One of the features of this work consists in devoting a special section to summing up the general characteristics of each of the greatest individual authors. The theory that it is wise to teach the general before the special is now happily going out of fashion. But the moment we know two authors we ought to begin to compare them, to note their likeness and their difference. Download or read book The Masters of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Stephen Gwynn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has there fore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge pos sessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. Book A Short History of Modern English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Modern English Literature Classic Reprint written by Edmund Gosse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces. Book A First Book in English Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Book in English Classic Reprint written by Alfred Allan Kern and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English The present volume is based upon the belief that gram mar, composition, and literature are not three separate and distinct subjects, but merely three inter-related divisions Of the same subject - English. If this be so, they should not be studied separately but together; only in this way can their true relation be brought out. Teachers of the classics and the romance languages, as well as teachers Of English, are unanimous in their Opinion that the greatest hindrance to the effective teaching Of language at the present time is the student's ignorance Of English grammar. We have, therefore, placed the section on grammar first instead of last, and have sought to make it fill a place between the brief review Of grammar that is occasionally appended to books on composition and the more complete treatises on the subject. As a further aid to the study Of grammar in other languages and in keeping with the recommendation Of the National Education AS Sociation, Universal Nomenclature has been used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of English Literature In no case is favour accorded to a period because it happens to be ancient, or to an author by reason of his conventional repute. The Diagrams at the head of each chapter or section are to be understood in the light of the General Plan on the sixth page, of which they are the expansion. With a partial exception in the case of the first, the Poetry in each age is placed to the left of the figure, the Prose to the right; and the treatment proceeds in a similarly uniform manner from Poetry to Prose, the order of historical sequence being preserved as nearly as possible. Where a connecting name in large capitals occurs in the centre of a diagram, the treatment of the authors follows the order of its letters. Book English Literature During the Lifetime of Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Literature During the Lifetime of Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by Felix E. Schelling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature During the Lifetime of Shakespeare The following pages attempt to tell once more, and as far as possible at first hand, the fascinating story of Elizabethan literature. But the tale has been somewhat compressed to treat what preceded the birth of Shakespeare with brevity, and what followed his death merely by indications and sug gestions. This compression has seemed the more justifiable because Shakespeare's own work, thus contemplated in what surrounded it, gives to the subject a closer unity, and because the transition from literature, as an Elizabethan conceived and practised it, to what it came to be regarded in the time of Charles I, was well on its way by the year 1616.
