Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in American History The author of this book has endeavored to meet the demand for a simple history of America, suitable for children of ten to twelve years of age, many of whom study no other text on the subject. In order to present a book of the most value the narrative treats of men who influence has been controlling in the destiny of the nation, but does not make of the their lives a series of hero stories. The facts of their lives and incidents of their careers are presented in sufficient fullness to reveal their personal traits and aid a pupil to understand their contributions to the current of events. The facts that are presented in the text are those which appear most important for child to know. Book A First Book in American History

Download or read book A First Book in American History written by Edward Eggleston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in American History: With Special Reference to the Lives and Deeds of Great Americans In preparing a first book of American history, it is necessary to keep in mind the two purposes such a work is required to serve. There are children whose school-life is brief; these must get all the instruction they are to receive in their country's history from a book of the grade of this. To another class of pupils the first book of American history is a preparation for the intelligent study of a textbook more advanced. It is a manifest waste of time and energy to require these to learn in a lower class the facts that must be restudied in a higher grade. Moreover, primary histories which follow the order of larger books are likely to prove dry and unsatisfactory condensations. But a beginner's book ought before all things else to be interesting. A fact received with the attention raised to its highest power remains fixed in the memory; that which is learned listlessly is lost easily, and a life-long aversion to history is often the main result produced by the use of an unsuitable textbook at the outset. The main peculiarity of the present book is that it aims to teach children the history of the country by making them acquainted with some of the most illustrious actors in it. A child is interested, above all, in persons. Biography is for him the natural door into history. The order of events in a nation's life is somewhat above the reach of younger pupils, but the course of a human life and the personal achievements of an individual are intelligible and delightful. Book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book in United States History The value of biography in teaching history to young pupils is well recognized. The personal, or human, element that this form of narration adds to the text arouses the interest that is essential to the study of history. Care should be taken, however, not to overemphasize biography lest the relative importance of the in dividual and the event be misunderstood and lest the historical connection between events be lost. The biographies furnished in' this text are abundant, and they have been selected because, taken together, they cover nearly all the events of the history of our country that the young pupil need know. Wherever biography is not available, or wherever it is advisable to emphasize the event rather than the individual or to preserve a closer connection between events, the author has resorted to the ordinary form of narration. In preparing the text he has used portions of his earlier work, A Primary History of the United States. When undertaken properly the study of history is not only very useful, but is a source of delight. If the pupil, in taking up the study for the first time, can see in it the wonderful story of people who have gone before him and builded that he might live the better, he will acquire a liking for history that will abide with him in after years. To give to the young people of America not only the advantages, but the pleasure, that may be found in the study of the history of their country is the purpose of the author. With the hope that his purpose will be fulfilled, this little book is sent forth on its mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by Albert F. Blaisdell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Some sort of a first book on American history is now quite generally used in schools as a preparation for the more intelligent study of a larger and more formal text-book in the higher grammar grades. For beginners, a mere compilation of facts is dry and unsatisfactory. Such books have now given place, for the most part, to those prepared on a more attractive and judicious plan. The real aim in a first book should be to interest boys and girls in the history of their country, and to encourage them to cultivate a taste for further study and reading. This book is intended for use in the earlier grammar grades and to be preliminary to the study of a more advanced work in the higher grades. The author has also kept in mind the fact that the school life of many children is brief, and that all their instruction in Amer ican history must come from a text-book of this kind. Download or read book An American History Classic Reprint written by Eleanor E. Riggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American History The history of the United States is unique in that it relates definitely to the growth of the American nation, and to the ability of this people to subdue and control the forces of natural environment. It is not a chronicle of the political and military development of a country. For this reason, it has been necessary to note specifically in this text the forces that have brought into existence this new nation. These forces are: First, the many nationalities that have helped to form this composite people; second, the European influences that have molded a tolerant and liberal-minded state; and third, the adjustment of old world civilization upon new-world environment. To this end, we find that the study of American history must include: First, the land itself; second, the relation of the European background to American history; third, the adjustment of ideals of religion, government, education, and industry to a primitive country; and fourth, the rela tions of this country in international questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America First: One Hundred Stories From Our Own History When children advance beyond the nursery age, no story is so wonderful as a true story. Fiction to them is never as appealing as fact. I have often been faced with the inquiry: whether or not a story is a true one. The look of gratification, when told that it actually happened, was most satisfying to me as a story-teller. The nearer a story is to the life and traditions of the child, the more eagerly it is attended. True stories about our own people, about our neighbors and friends, and about our own country at large, are more interesting than true stories of remote places and people. We naturally are interested in our own affairs, and the nearer they are to us the greater the interest we feel. Book Stories of Early American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Early American History Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Fisk Gordy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Early American History For children of tender years, the material must not only be concrete and colorful, but it must also be presented in language so simple that the thought can be easily grasped. If the author has succeeded in this twofold purpose, Stories of Early American History should fulfil its mission. It is hoped that the fine illustrations and the attractive typographical features of the book will help in bringing vividly before the child's mind the events recounted in the text. Another aid in making the stories real will, it is intended, be found in Some Things to Think About. These and similar questions, which will suggest themselves to the teacher, will doubtless serve to help the child in Vitalizing the life of the past and connecting it with the present and his own life. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge my deep obliga tion to Mr. Forrest Morgan, of the Watkinson Library, Hart ford, and to Miss Elizabeth P. Peck, of the Hartford Public High School, both of whom have read the manuscript and have made many valuable suggestions and criticisms.
