Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In State of the Heart, Dr. Haider Warraich takes readers inside the ER, inside patients' rooms, and inside the history and science of cardiac disease. State of the Heart traces the entire arc of the heart, from the very first time it was depicted on stone tablets, to a future in which it may very well become redundant. While heart disease has been around for a while, the type of heart disease people have, why they have it, and how it’s treated is changing. Yet, the golden age of heart science is only just beginning. And with treatments of heart disease altering the very definitions of human life and death, there is no better time to look at the present and future of heart disease, the doctors and nurses who treat it, the patients and caregivers who live with it, and the stories they hold close to their chests. More people die of heart disease than any other disease in the world and when any form of heart disease progresses, it can result in the development of heart failure. Heart failure affects millions and can affect anyone at anytime, a child recovering from a viral infection, a woman who has just given birth or a cancer patient receiving chemotherapy. Yet new technology to treat heart failure is fundamentally changing just what it means to be human. Mechanical pumps can be surgically sown into patients’ hearts and when patients with these pumps get really sick, sometimes they don’t need a doctor or a surgeon—they need a mechanic. In State of the Heart, the journey to rid the world of heart disease is shown to be reflective of the journey of medical science at large. We are learning not only that women have as much heart disease as men, but that the type of heart disease women experience is diametrically different from that in men. We are learning that heart disease and cancer may have more in common than we could have imagined. And we are learning how human evolution itself may have led to the epidemic of heart disease. In understanding how our knowledge of the heart evolved, State of the Heart traces the twisting and turning road that science has taken—filled with potholes and blind turns—all the way back to its very origin.

Download or read book Shelley s Music written by Paul A. Vatalaro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2009. This book argues that the images of and allusions to music in Shelley’s writing demonstrate his attempt to infuse the traditionally masculine word with the traditionally feminine voice and music. This further extends to his even more fundamental desire to integrate the "object voice" with his own subjectivity. For Shelley, what plagues this integration is the prospect of losing both the poet’s authority and the subjectivity upon which it relies. This book asserts that the resultant deadlock and instability paradoxically becomes Shelley’s ultimate goal — creating a steady state of suspension that finally preserves both his authority and his humanity.

Download or read book Seeing Like a Firm written by Associate Professor of Social and Political Philosophy European School of Social and Political Sciences (Espol) Pierre-Yves Néron and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business corporations are political entities and need to be considered as such. Seeing Like a Firm invites readers to do just that by providing a political theory of the business firm. It argues that firms 'see' in a conservative way and embrace a 'conservatism of commerce' that requires socioeconomic inequality. By offering a new interpretation of conservatism based not on preserving the existing system but on an 'aesthetics of inequality', Néron provides an alternative way to think about the main challenges that proponents of equality face.

Book excerpt: This book will forge a new connection between you and your heart. It will foster the development of your talent and guide you to its use. Author Tomas Rika shows you a step-by-step approach and levels to access before you can connect and harmonise your heart with your mind. It is a truism that, under pressure, winners exhibit winning behaviour and losers exhibit losing behaviorbut how do winners develop the strength of mind that separates them from otherwise equally talented losers? The answer to that question is to be found in this book. A lifetime of tennis coaching has provided Tomas Rika with the opportunity to observe tennis champions and tennis also-rans on an up-close-and-personal basis. He has now distilled what he has learned on the court in the pages of this book. Athletes, businesspeople, and all who are fed up with a life lived in second place will find this book a valuable addition to their library. Thomas Tait, Acting Head of OxEthica, Oxford, England

Download or read book Fire of Mercy Heart of the Word written by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the unstudied eye, Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. Erasmo Leiva here acts as our guide, showing Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the non-technical reader. The tone is very much gustate et videte, quoniam suavis est Dominus [taste and see how good the Lord is]-as it is "friend, come up higher!". The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva points to Matthew's gospel as being deeply ecclesial because it is first Christological. He comments on the Greek text, demonstrating to the reader nuances in the text that defy translation into English without serious revision of the text. Leiva uses linguistic analysis to aid the non-Greek reader with the literal meaning of the text; numerous quotes from the Fathers and the liturgy of the church demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.
