Book A Finite Element Stress Analysis of a Crack in a Bi material Plate

Download or read book A Finite Element Stress Analysis of a Crack in a Bi material Plate written by R. K. Leverenz and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stress analysis is obtained for the problem of a crack in one material of a bi-material plate located perpendicular to the material interface. A numerical solution is obtained using finite element techniques to obtain the force displacement relationships. Knowing this, a work integral method is used to determine the stress intensity factors for the crack. Since the work integral is independent of path, the path of integration can be chosen far enough away from the crack tip to avoid the complications of the crack tip singularity. The problem is studied for a number of cases where the crack length to plate width ratio, distance from crack tip to material interface, and the ratio of material constants were varied as parameters. Book The Elastic Stress Analysis of a Bi material Plate with a Crack Normal to the Interfaces

Download or read book The Elastic Stress Analysis of a Bi material Plate with a Crack Normal to the Interfaces written by Fong-tsu Lin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic stress analyses of a bi-material plate with a crack approaching normally to the bi-material interfaces and with crack tips at the interfaces are studied in this investigation. The finite element method was used to analyze the problems. Strain energy release rate, was calculated by a potential energy method for the crack approaching normally to the interfaces. Finite element procedures and computer programs for the bi- material plate under plane stress condition were developed during the course of this investigation. The strength of stress singularity, the stress distribution (straight ahead of the crack and along the interface) are also discussed. The strain energy release rate coefficient, of an aluminum-epoxy system was found by an experimental compliance calibration procedure. A boundary collocation procedure applied to the Zak and Williams stress function was employed to determine the elastic stress function in the vicinity of the crack tip of a bi-material plate with a crack normal to the interfaces and crack tips at the interfaces. Book Fracture Mechanics for an Interfacial Crack Between Adhesively Bonded Dissimilar Materials

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics for an Interfacial Crack Between Adhesively Bonded Dissimilar Materials written by Charles Yi-jer Wang and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plate composed of two dissimilar materials, bonded together along a straight line with a center crack was studied. This problem represents an idealization of an adhesive joint or a composite structure with an interfacial flaw or crack caused by faulty joining techniques. Common examples are imperfections, voids, or broken bonds on the composite interface. Combined with the finite element technique, the strain energy method and the J-integral method have been extended to a bi-material problem to calculate the value of the strain energy rate. A general relationship between strain energy rate and total stress intensity factor is then derived using the crack closure technique. The ratio of stress intensity factors was also examined. The numerical analysis concentrated on three categories of composite materials with moduli ratio 1, 20, and 120. These results provide a complete crack-tip stress analysis and are needed for the study and understanding of the fracture mechanics of bi-material problems. Lastly, the compliance method was employed for experimental verification of the numerical results. An aluminum alloy-epoxy bi-material plate with a moduli ratio equal to 20 was examined. This study has yielded useful results in terms of the analytical tools to guide further experimental fracture studies of adhesive joints and composite materials. (Author, modified-PL).

Book A Finite Element Program for Fracture Mechanics Analysis of Composite Material

Download or read book A Finite Element Program for Fracture Mechanics Analysis of Composite Material written by SN. Atluri and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assumed displacement hybrid finite-element procedure developed for treating a general class of problems involving mixed-mode behavior of cracks is used to solve some two-dimensional, fracture mechanics problems involving rectilinear-anisotropic materials. This finite-element program uses four "singular" elements which surround the crack tip and "regular" elements which occupy the remaining region. The singular element has a built-in displacement field of the ?r type with the two modes of stress intensity factors, KI and KII, as unknowns. Displacement compatibility between singular and regular elements is also maintained. Isoparametric transformations are used to derive the stiffness matrix of quadrilateral curved elements. Rectilinear anisotropic, nonhomogeneous, but linear elastic, material properties are considered. The program was checked out by analyzing a bimaterial tension plate with an eccentric crack and a centrally-cracked orthotropic tension plate. The results thus obtained agreed well with those by Erdogan and Biricikoglu, and Bowie and Freese, respectively. The program was then used to analyze two fracture test specimens for which analytical solutions do not exist. The first specimen was the doubly edge-notched tension plate with material principal directions oriented 0°-90° or ±45° to the geometric axes of symmetry and with varying crack length. The second specimen was the three-point bend specimen with material principal directions oriented 0°-90° to the geometric axes of symmetry. Finally, an orthotropic tension plate with an oblique center crack was analyzed. Finite-element solutions of most of these problems do not seem to have appeared in prior literature.

Book Structural Analysis Systems

Book excerpt: Structural Analysis Systems: Software—Hardware Capability—Compatibility—Applications, Volume 2 is a practical guidebook on structural analysis systems and their applications. It provides detailed information about a specific software, its postprocessor capabilities and limitations, computer-aided design connection, and compatibility with the most common computers. Several practical examples from industry with computer and user cost are given. This volume consists of 17 chapters and begins with a description of AFAG, a dual finite element analysis program based on the flexibility method. The discussion then turns to the AQUADYN system, designed primarily to reduce the hydrodynamics problem to a linear integral equation for large floating or immersed structures. The following chapters focus on other structural analysis computer programs such as BOSOR4 and BOSOR5, INFESA, MEF/MOSAIC, RCAFAG, and STRUGEN. Some general purpose and special purpose finite element programs used for stress analysis of composite materials are also considered. This book will be a useful resource for practitioners in scientific and industrial disciplines such as mechanical or civil engineering, informatics, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Book Extended Finite Element Method for Crack Propagation

Download or read book Extended Finite Element Method for Crack Propagation written by Sylvie Pommier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel techniques for modeling 3D cracks and their evolution in solids are presented.
