Book Mathematical Model of Estuarial Sediment Transport

Download or read book Mathematical Model of Estuarial Sediment Transport written by Ranjan Ariathurai and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional finite element model that simulates erosion, Transport, and deposition of suspended sediments is presented. The breadth-averaged or depth-averaged equations may be used depending on the problem to be solved. The governing equations for two phase transport are derived and then solved by the finite element method using isoparametric quadrilateral elements in which a quadratic approximation is made for the suspended sediment concentrations. Expressions used for the rates and conditions under which erosion and deposition occur are from previous experimental studies. Continuing aggregation is accounted for by specifying the settling velocity of the flocs in each element at each time step. The bed is considered to be formed of a number of layers of sediment whose physical properties change with overburden pressure. The model provides suspended sediment concentrations and bed profile at each time step. Numerical stability and convergence tests were conducted by comparing simulated results with analytic solutions and actual measurements. The original model, SEDIMENT I, was verified by comparison with measurements in a recirculating flume. The modified model, SEDIMENT II, developed for this project was verified by comparison with field measurements in the Savannah Estuary, Georgia. (Author).

Book Cohesive Sediments

Download or read book Cohesive Sediments written by Neville Burt and published by . This book was released on 1997-04-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an alarming tendency today to assume that something calculated by a computer must be correct, yet the phrase 'garbage in, garbage out' (gigo) is possibly nowhere more (generally) appropriate than in computer modelling of cohesive sediment behaviour. The behaviour of 'mud' is highly complex and one only needs to look at a sample under a microscope to see why - the variety of particle shapes, not to mention the presence of living organisms, make it a substance with properties virtually unique to its situation which even change with time. For many years most researchers tended to avoid it, preferring to study sand and gravel, but a dedicated few tackled it and found a forum for discussing their work in the first Cohesive Sediments Workshop in Florida in 1980. The workshop met about every three years resulting in publication of some of the most definitive papers on the subject. By 1994 it was time to recognise the extensive research being carried on in Europe by holding the workshop in that region. Intercoh '94 (the 4th Nearshore and Estuarine Cohesive Sediment Transport Conference) drew together about 100 of the world's leading researchers in the field. The resulting papers, presented in this volume, truly represent the definitive state of the art on the measurement and modelling of mud properties today.

Book Finite Elements in Water Resources

Download or read book Finite Elements in Water Resources written by J. P. Laible and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the edited proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Finite Elements in Water Resources, held at the University of Vermont, USA in June 1984. This Conference cont inues the successful series started at Princeton University in 1976, followed by the Conference in Imperial College, London, UK in 1978, the third Conference at the University of Mississippi, USA in 1980 and the fourth at the University of Hannover, Germany in 1982. The objective of this Conference is to provide engineers and scientists interested in water resources with the state-of-t- art on finite element modelling. The Proceedings review the basic theory and applications of the technique in groundwater and seepage, transport phenomena, viscous flow, river, lake and ocean modelling. The fundamentals of the numerical techniques employed in finite elements are also discussed. Many applications illus trate the versatility and generality of the Finite Element Method for the simulation of a wide range of problems in water resources. More recent schemes, in particular, boundary elements, are also presented, together with a series of advanced numerical techniques. The Conference has become an internationally accepted forum for the presentation of new developments of finite elements in water resources techniques. Because of this, a large number of abstracts were submitted to the Organizing Committee and it is our only reg ret that it was impossible to accept all these contributions. The overwhelming response to our Call for Papers has ensured the high quality of these proceedings.

Book Application of a Two Dimensional Finite Element Model for Shallow Water Computations

Download or read book Application of a Two Dimensional Finite Element Model for Shallow Water Computations written by Allen M. Teeter and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of difficult estuarine problems often requires the application of relatively sophisticated modeling techniques. The hybrid modeling approach, used at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES), combines several physical and numerical models into an integrated solution that employs each technique to do those things for which it is best suited. By exploiting the strengths and avoiding the weaknesses of each solution method, an integrated solution is obtained that is more accurate and reliable than that attainable with any single solution technique. The example application to be described here is part of a study to predict sediment deposition in Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, and the response of the bay and river basin to that deposition. A number of models are utilized in this study to simulate river flows, sediment transport, tides, salinities, storm surges, and waves. This paper describes a horizontal plane, two-dimensional hydrodynamic finite element model, some model tests, and preliminary application to a large, topographically-complex, well-mixed estuary.
